That's a good question ... maybe they SHOULD make a vow. Then again what's the use, it's not like they'll stick to it anyway.

Do elders take vows, and what are they?
by rebel8 inmore specifically, do they have to repent of past wrongdoings, and do they have to make amends to those they harmed in the past?
(i know, this question sounds like aa.

Seeing that you've faded and you received the message through your wife ... are you sure the baptismal candidate really sent a message asking you to be there? Is there some reason she couldn't ask you herself?

Has your brain been re-wired with the "F" word?
by Gregor ini learned an interesting fact from my father's doctor when he was being treated for a stroke.
mom had mentioned that even though dad couldn't speak well enough to ask for a glass of water he could clearly say, "goddammit".
the dr. explained that epithets are from a different part of the brain and this area had not been affected by the stroke.. i found this very interesting.

I've never used the "F" word in my life ... come to think of it, I can't remember ever using profanity. Even my husband knows this. One time he even bet money on it!

"The Sound of Music" not theocratic enough?
by Frequent_Fader_Miles inone of the local congregations is having a farewell "concert" for their co who's leaving.
of course, the book study conductor felt obligated to take control by appointing himself screener of all performances before the event (how shocking!
what's wrong with the song as is?

One of the local congregations is having a farewell "concert" for their CO who's leaving. Zzzzzz
Of course, the book study conductor felt obligated to take control by appointing himself screener of all performances before the event (how shocking! ) Those in attendance weren't beating down the door to volunteer, but one child very eagerly volunteered to sing a song ... the farewell song from The Sound of Music (you all know it right?) After thinking for a few moments the book study conductor chimed in ... "Hmmm, you may have to modify it a bit"
What's wrong with the song as is? We began to wonder whether he even knew the song.

Witnesses and Wedding Parties
by karnage ini am a chef at a country club in my area.
this is the season for a lot of weddings and i was told by some other employees about some past jw weddings that was held at our establishment.
i have heard stories about witnesses placing their trash on the floor and then leaving, leaving instructions for our staff to not smell the wedding cake, ring the glass for attention, and no raising glasses in proposing a toast.

The very short answer is that the toasting of glasses has origins in "pagan" non-Christian religious practices
So does the wedding cake, wedding rings, the white wedding dress ..... etc. They see no problem with having those however.

Fading In? Am I nuts?
by jaydoe ini am a baptized jw that faded some years back.
in those days i deeply believed in the org and became disillusioned by some things happening in the local congregation.
following some research on the net i decided to fade out of watchtower existence because i did not want to keep mixing with false religion (or so i thought at the time).

My newfound open mindedness would not allow me to be dominated by small minded elders or other people.
If you really feel like this, then you'll be in trouble for sure if you do go back.

Showing love by sleeping with prostitutes and encouraging wrongdoing ...
by Frequent_Fader_Miles infurther to my earlier post about the conversation i had with a depressed jw friend who was baptized at 12 years old .... she knows i married a non-jw, but doesn't know of my fading.
she asked me whether i would help my husband with christmas shopping and gift wrapping.
of course my answer was yes, but i decided to avoid answering directly and pick her brain a bit.

i think the argument of your jw friend is okay. its really something different whether you "accept" behaviour or help doing it. if you think someone risks his life by doing something its not smart helping him doing it. thats just the way JW see xmas and stuff.
If she was so bent on doing everything the JW way, then why marry a Catholic, visually impaired man (whom she knew from the beginning would NEED help with this stuff anyway), only to refuse to help out when he asks? After all, I'm sure he would support her in areas that he wouldn't necessarily agree with himself. Besides, from the JW perspective she would be risking her own life by doing something "not smart" and marrying a "non-believer".

Further to my earlier post about the conversation I had with a depressed JW friend who was baptized at 12 years old ...
She knows I married a non-JW, but doesn't know of my fading. She asked me whether I would help my husband with Christmas shopping and gift wrapping. Of course my answer was yes, but I decided to avoid answering directly and pick her brain a bit. Why do you ask, was my response. Well, as it turns out, the married, visually impaired, Catholic man she loves posed the very same question to her. He wanted to know whether she would help him out if she was his wife. Her answer to him was no, since she felt that helping him with Christmas shopping was partaking in Paganism.
At this point I answered: "Yes I would help my husband with the Christmas shopping." (As a matter of fact we even celebrated his mom's birthday earlier that day ). I even told her that in my opinion, her helping out her visually impaired husband would be showing Christ-like love, especially since hypothetically she would be married to an "unbeliever". After all, didn't Jesus himself even associate with prostitutes and tax collectors? Her retort was: "Yes he did. But Jesus didn't go around sleeping with the prostitutes to show them love, or encourage the tax collectors in wrongdoing just to show love." Sigh ... what a dumb analogy. I almost laughed out loud, but refrained from doing so. Her level of brainwashing astounded me.
Here I was, having to explain why assisting a visually impaired person to do something important to HIM should be considered as showing love.
