how did a thread about one night stands become a thread about Crumpet and her sex life? It's very interesting how a general question became focused on one person. I think some people need to separate sex itself from some of the other things they are concerned about. Sex is fun, nothing wrong with having a good time that way. Also it definitely puts a glow on the day. Other concerns, like disease and safety, are serious, but they don't make sex or one night stands a sin. They just make a nice wholesome activity a lot more risky than it used to be.

My Mom died yesterday
by skeptic1914 inmy mom passed away yesterday.
she was a die-hard jw.
i tried to explain why i couldn't accept certain teachings but rather than rationally consider what i had to say she chose to believe i was just "confused".

I had the same experience. My little mother died a life-long JW, fully expecting to never see me again because I left the org. and wasn't going back. I didn't try to change her; didn't see the point. She talked about seeing her mother and father again, in the last few minutes of her life. I hope she got to, although I don't really believe it. So I think I know how you feel - and you might find you feel confused for some time. I didn't feel any overwhelming grief when my mother died; we weren't that close, but I felt terribly sorry for her. She knew that she couldn't live and asked them to pull the meds. I thought she was brave.
It feels strange to lose a parent - if you want to talk about it sometime just email me. I will understand, having had a similar experience. One of the things I know is that when profound things happen to you, you can't help talking about them.

hmmmmm, so I wasn't the only one?
I used to zone out, or take notes, or look for split ends in my hair, or daydream, or sit way up front and make faces at my friends when they were giving talks - I never got busted for that. Lots of us teenagers spent a long time in the bathroom, couldn't talk loudly though as sound carried. That could be funny when some old geezer was in the bathroom making loads of noise, which you could hear all over the KH.

A few questions for the Brits
by sir82 ini saw the movie "the queen" a few days ago, and was wondering how accurate the portrayals were of some of the things in the movie, such as:.
-- in at least one scene, tony blair is shown in the back seat of a car being driven down a highway, with his secretary at his side.
it appears that there is normal, regular traffic going down the road along with him.

The queen doesn't strike me as being that sentimental. I thought the whole stag thing was way too obvious. Somehow I didn't buy anything in the movie, although I enjoyed watching it. I thought the actor portraying Prince Charles should get an award for absolutely abysmal acting. I like watching the royals, it's more fun than watching someone like Anna Nicole Smith, for instance. Hijinks in high places, fun to watch.

"The Red Corvette" problem -- a disconnect in view points
by AlmostAtheist inin another thread, a poster brought up what he called "the red corvette" problem.
the problem, he said, is that if you are a true atheist, you must believe that a red corvette could simply form out of nothing.
if you believe life originated from nothing, then you must believe that a less-complicated machine such as a sports car could also have originated from nothing.

Here's the problem: "The problem, he said, is that if you are a true atheist, you MUST believe that a red Corvette could simply form out of nothing. "
That's your definition of atheist, honey. It isn't mine. I'm an atheist who doesn't have to believe something just because you think it is logical.

I would say mind your own business. If she wanted to tell you, she would, especially since you have faded and clearly wouldn't out her to the congregation. She doesn't owe you an explanation, and it's none of your business. Pressuring her to tell you something that you guess but aren't sure about could just drive a wedge into your relationship.

Funny story about a funeral
by dawg inmy uncle died last month (father's side), so i mustered up the courage to attend the funeral; he was never baptised and i was never disfellowshipped so folks still talk to me thinking i'm da not realizing i'm a full flegged apostate-this has since changed as i've decided to come forward since then.
so the elder gets up and gives the funeral sermon complete with many of the bible myths talking snake and all... sounds like a damn bad acid trip.
so after the graveside service one of my old friends i haven't seen in 17 years comes up and says "did you learn anything by todays sermon'?

I guess that's my biggest complaint about the org. I don't believe the bible anyway, so I don't care about doctrine. But the unequal distribution of love...so shocking. I still remember a talk from many many years ago, or maybe it was a watchtower article, that seriously discussed whether you could stop to help a disfellowshiped woman change a tire. If I remember correctly, the conclusion was that you could IF she was on the way to the meeting. That is so unbelievable. I thought it was legalistic at the time and I still think so. Jesus showed love to people who were hated by others because they were considered wicked. That you can go to a woman's funeral and not show some compassion to her daughter, just because the daughter is DF'd, well, that proves that they just don't get the idea of love or of compassion.
I'm a firm believer in calling people on their crap. Congratulations on doing just that!
