Quite a nice study really. I couldn't critise a study that upholds loyalty to principles and standing up for what you believe.
The darker side is that as JWs we were encouraged to stand up for what the Society believes not what we personally hold as our core convictions, e.g. the blood issue.

Hey you slacker elders...get off yer duffs!
by sir82 inprobably the last "gilead update" from the infamous "friend of a friend", as the class graduates this upcoming weekend.. here is one of the topics discussed recently in class:.
sometimes the elders feel overwhelmed with taking care of a large .
abraham's slaves then he obviously he trained them personally.

I have to agree with tijkmo - it doesn't have to be a farce.
The problem with the JW religion is that it is one of rules and regulations rather than one about helping fellow humans to find God. I don't think I was too bad at shepherding I my time but I would approach it in a different manner now. Most Jw elders are Pharisees rules enforcers not shepherds.

Will Bush change his view on global warming now
by ballistic in.
this is what they are discussing on bbc news 24 right now, in relation to the katrina hurricane.. their conclusion was quite negetive, i was just interested to see if anyone on here had any views?.

Seems to be some doubt here as whether the earth is warming and a lot here seem to be either skeptical or taking a head in the sand approach. I guess none of us are experts on the subject so we need to the research.
Actually, there are two issues here;
1. Is the planet warming?
2. Is the warming due to human activity, particularly burning of fossil fuels?
For question 1, the answer is a definite yes. The debate surrounds question 2.
For a balanced view of hurricanes, National Geographic had an excellent article on the subject a couple of months ago,

The Time Of The End: Could It Be Upon Us?
by jayhawk1 init has been so long since i had anything to say on this site.
but here it goes.... for those who don't know or remember my story... five years ago i walked out of the kingdom hall for the last time.
it was the weekend after my dad tragically died and just a few weeks after reading sites like freeminds.org.

I agree with many of the views expressed here - there have been far worse periods in mankind's history.
Personally, I would not like to have lived at the time of Christ, the dark ages or the middle ages. The civil war in the USA was horrific and the atrocities of the World War II are un-mentionable. None of these events heralded the time of the end.
Those of us who still believe in God do struggle to come up with an explanation. The best I can do is that I to believe in a world of infinite possibilities, with endless possibilities for both good and evil.

Anyone been baptised in another religon since leaving the dubs?
by misspeaches ini was just wondering if any of you have been baptised into another religon since leaving the jw's.. if you don't mind sharing i would love to know if it was a monumental decision for you to make?.
what was your status when you did it?
disphellowshipped?

No and I don't think I would.
I am not attending another church at the moment but even if I were, I consider my baptism and dedication to between myself and God and to still be valid. I got baptised before they changed the questions, so I my dedication was to do God's will as directed by the holy spirit - not in recognition that I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

* Please Read Oct 1st WT A WHOLE article about the dangers or university *
by truthseeker inthis topic has been touched on before by another poster, however here are the main paragraphs of the second study article, taken from the october 1st 2005 watchtower.
before i begin, remember this quote taken from an article published in the 1969 awake!
if you are a young person, you will have to face the fact you will never grow old in this system of things

And, just when I thought they had ligthened up a little on further eductaion.
What is most significant is that it is a main Watchtower study article.
Remember how the WTB&TS does its dirty business, often having a slightly ambiguous official line but a much harder from DOs & COs which filters down to local elders. So, whilst the article does not use expressions such as 'waste of time' and 'our youths should be out pioneering' it is certainity that these will be used by elders from the platform when it is studied.

Nun confronts Hanks over 'Da Vinci Code'
by William Penwell inread this today on cnn.
the other night there was some catholic scholar referring to the book as being fiction.
i was confused as to whether he was referring to the "da vinci code" or the "bible"?

I have read the book and agree with all the critics; it is poorly writen with an appalling bad ending.
Then again being an armchair critic is far too easy. It is an entertaining book book which should make a 'good' film (i.e. in the Indiana Jones style). It should be taken for what it is a bit of light reading not a serious proposal about the life and offspring of Christ.

On a macro level, the Witnesses are pretty harmless
by logansrun inwarning: this post may be damaging to your biases.. it seems to me that the "danger" the witnesses pose to larger society is, well, pretty damn small.
just think about it: the witnesses are almost not involved in politics at all, except the occassional "freedom of religion and speech" issues they take to various courts, issues i am happy to support the witnesses in, even if i strongly disagree with their beliefs.
you will not see jws supporting banning abortions or gay marriages or a whole host of other civil liberties and freedoms that evangelicals rally around like the village people searching for frankenstein's monster.
