Spanner, of course they all laughed at your jokes. They knew you were about to give them a house pretty soon, they could be charitable, what?

What was the "final straw" that made you leave the JW's ??????
by run dont walk inwhat happened or was said, that made you decide, enough is enough, i am out of here ?????
?

The end for me, the last straw but not the only one for sure was being kicked off the Watchtower reader's list when I grew a beard. Boy, did that piss me off. But, as noted, that was only the last straw, not the only one. Like so many others here, I detested the lack of love, the hypocrisy, the elitism. AND I had been, on my own, reading various philosophers.
Funny what insights you can get from an independant reading of philosophy. It occured to me that the JWs considered that truth was the proper arrangement of words, and if you re-arranged the words of your explanation, then you could be wrong. This came from the discussion about facial hair and what it meant. Their arrangement of words made facial hair a sign of rebellion. My arrangement of the same words made facial hair a personal preference.
Realizing that words were symbols was a great help. And I just couldn't believe that the proper arrangement of words resulted in the truth. So I left. Simple enough.

Hamas, that comparison is not foolish at all. The point is that Berlin before the war was a center of world culture and learning. All the killing that was done in those times was legal, it was indeed the law of the land, just as what has been described above in this thread is the law of the land.
I don't know where or how in your mind you manufacture a difference. There just isn't one.
Islam keeps its adherents immured in the 12th century (its women in the 9th) and with no hope.

Irradiate or not???
by Latte injust wonder what you all thought of the following topic....thanks!
http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/multimedia/webpage/irradiatedqa/
irradiation can be used to kill bacteria that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella, campylobacter and e. coli.
-
Francois
Yes, irradiate.
The food doesn't rot because the little bugs that make it rot have been killed by the radiation. However, irradiation has nothing at all to do with the food's chemical characteristics and reactions therewith. Not a problem.
Just have to realize that certain words conjure up reactions of fear in whole segments of society. "Demons" send JWs fleeing in all directions screaming "Jehovah" at the top of their lungs. Scream "coolant failure" in a nuclear power plant and panic ensues. And really, anything related to nuclear reactions or power and the uneducated or unaware is immediately fearful. "Radiation" is one of those power words. The general public can be mightily aroused by that word, as we have seen. And now, were talking about "irradiation" of grandpa's tomatoes !!! "Them gall durn thangs gonna glow in tha' dark, Ethyl? I doan want no 'maters what glows in tha' dark." See what I mean?

The Apotheosis of the Internet
by metatron inonce there was a joke in which scientists build a giant computer that contains all.
human knowledge and reasoning ability.
they ask it one question: "is there a god?".

Have you seen that old movie The Forbin Project? The implications of that movie are chilling indeed. And they're right along the lines you anticipate, except they're not home devices. Just know that at the end of the movie, the mega-computer has had a voice component built in and it gets attention by saying, "This is the voice of World Control."
You gotta see this movie.

Will America Ever Be Able To Beat England?
by Englishman init seems that americans are keen to get amongst the big boys when it comes to soccer skills as can be seen from the embedded page futher down this post.. however, i have a sneaky feeling that americans might well be lacking in the genetic skills department when it comes to actually understanding the finer points of the noble art of soccer, let alone having any natural aptitude for the game.
this is a an excerpt from a book by bill bryson, a very popular american author who keeps us brits amused for hours with his experiences of living in england.this is bill's account of his first ever attempt to play soccer:.
"i had watched football (soccer) on tv and i thought i had a fair idea of what was required, so when one of the team lofted a ball in my direction, i decided to flick it casually into the net with my head, the way i had seen kevin keegan do it.

My Becoming a JW
by Juliana ini was raised non-religious.
i don't call myself an atheist as such because i don't like to label anyone, but i don't actually believe in god (though i am christian in background, and several branches of family family are roman catholic).
my fiance knows this.

Let's just cut to the chase. Don't marry this guy. If you do, you will have a lifetime full of prospects of happiness and satisfaction BEHIND you.
But if you want to waste years of your time and perhaps never find a way back to normality, especially after you have children, go right aheah. It's a nightmare you don't need. Why don't you just go through the post here and read them at random? There's over two years worth of posts here. And there are quite a few from people in your situation - one partner is in and the other partner was talked into being in, but now wants out with all their might. It ain't pretty, especially if they have kids.

HAVE PEOPLE ONLY BEEN ON EARTH FOR 5000 YRS LIKE JW'S SAY?
by FreeofGuilt ini was always taught in the jw religion, that humans have really only been on earth for 5000 years or so... there is so much evidence of the neandertherdal people, with scientists finding many skulls, bones, & such, but scientists date these bones 100 thousand-millions of years old... the society used to always add that carbon dating is not accurate.
i also noticed that jws never talked about the dinosaurs much... what do you think??????

Carbon dating has evolved just like everything else. JWs attack carbon dating as if there has been no advancement in the science at all. That is just plain dishonest. But then we ARE discussing the JWs here aren't we?
Early man was on this planet from time out of mind. I don't remember exactly how old "Lucy" is, but she's very ancient, and certainly more than five thousand years. Seems I remember something on the order of around 1.25 million years old.
