Does God define "right and wrong" or is there an intrinsic 'good' ?
by Simon ini don't personally believe in a 'god' but i wonder for those who do .... is there an intrinsic "right and wrong" or moral code that would exist whether or not there was a god?.
to put it another way, is what we believe is "right or wrong" based on whatever god decides is right or wrong (ie.
he set's the standard) or is it an intrinisc thing that he also must adhere to in order to be thought of as 'good'.. if god has to adhere and go along with some intrinsic value system then does this effect any claims to be omnipotent and always good?

What is good or bad is I believe based on our personal belief system which is probably heavily based on the accepted norms laid down and learnt from society. It doesn't make them intrinsically good or bad though and neither does making up stories of a God supporting them.
Excellent analysis Simon, I agree 100%.

I got out because the Elders told me I had to make a choice between my new job working for a government agency (NASA) with good pay and benefits, paying off the enormous debt I was in, or “do the right thing” and return to my TV repair / janitor / security guard jobs and live like a pauper.
I chose to provide for my family, pay my debts off, and have a meaningful and challenging career. In a nice way I more or less told the Elders to shove it. That was the major break for me. And then some years later I put the word watchtower in a search engine and that was all she wrote.

It must be kind of hard to be a JW for any stretch of time and realizing that now it’s ok to be transfused with cleansed cows blood, and that “generation” doesn’t mean what it once did, or that “1975” is now a year of no particular significance.
Even the good old reliable “kings of the north and south” mean virtually nothing since their identity keeps changing. Well at least they can take some measure of comfort knowing that the wicked men of Sodom
will, won’t,will, won’t,will, won’t be resurrected to share paradise.Welcome to the board BillyBob.

Are You In Support Of Starting A War In Iraq ?
by minimus init looks inevitable.
do you think this is more a carry over from president pappy bush's not getting the job done while he was in office?
do you think the usa and it's allies can fight multiple wars??

I would hope that everyone’s answer to the above question is a very loud and decisive
NO!
That is current position taken by the US government. Contrary to some peoples understanding, the US government and it's people do not desire war. However one should not mistake a lack of desire for war with a lack of willingness to enact it. I assure you, the resolve to carry through with the military option is quite firm.
Not long ago similar scenarios were played out with regard to Afghanistan and Yugoslavia. The US government and a few of their allies asked for some specific things to be done and backed up that request with a military option.
In the case of Afghanistan, it was: Stop harboring terrorists and hand over the Al-Qaeda leaders or you will be dealt with militarily. They made their choice, they did not choose wisely.
In the case of Yugoslavia, it was: Stop killing or “ethnically cleansing” your own people and threatening your neighbors or you will be dealt with militarily. They too made their choice, and they did not choose wisely.
Now we are at the same point with Iraq, and the US government and some of their allies are now asking: Give up your weapons of mass destruction, stop killing, torturing, and raping your own people and threatening your neighbors or we will deal with you militarily.
Should the US and it’s allies be doing this? Are they being a bully for doing so? Or are they in fact to be commended for these actions against tyrants? Each must answer such questions as they see fit and as their prejudices dictate.
Nonetheless, there is a choice. No war is not the only possibility, even at this late date, however it absolutely is the default choice if what is being asked for at this time is not complied with fully. Saddam, there is a choice, please choose wisely.

It’s funny how the borg “Armageddon any time now” programming is so embedded. In 1987 I moved from my home state, started a new job, and stopped going to meetings. At one level I had made the break and abandoned the tower and it’s teachings, or so I thought.
In that year I was offered a chance to join the company 401k plan. I declined, and for a number of years thereafter did not save a dime for retirement. Now I find myself playing catch-up and it’s all because the deeply entrenched jw programming caused me to “reason” it would be foolish to save for the future. Now how foolish is that!
Being part of a cult is a dangerous thing. It’s a danger to your health, to your happiness, and to your future. Please learn from my example.
STAY AWAY FROM CULTS LIKE THE WATCHTOWER!

I would hope that it is not the god of the bible that defines the standard of what is good or bad because the examples of the god of love set forth in this book are quite malevolent to say the least.
You know the god of the bible, the god of love, don’t you?
He is the one who orders the annihilation of people wholesale including young children and infants and gets very pissed when some are spared. He is the one who declares his servant righteous when he proceeds to hand his own daughters over to a crowd to be gang-raped.
Is it not amazing that the average godless atheist holds to a much higher standard of conduct then the so-called god of love himself? Is it not amazing?

Isaiah Book Volume Two, Page 260: Scary?
by Room 215 inonce again, my wife left some of her wt literature within easy reach of yours truly, ostensibly in the hope that i'll pick it up and reappraise.
it's bookmarked with the current week's study material; anf frankly, if anything can reinforce my inclination to stay away, it's this drivel.
does it not dawn on any of these that all this hallucinogenic blather about 1918, 1919, 1922, etc.

The most scary aspect about this is that these men, the governing body, literally have the life, death, and general welfare of millions of people in their hands and that down to the single individual witness, each will emphatically swear that there are no leaders in the Watchtower.
If these men would simply ask witnesses to forego their proper education, a reasonable standard of living, and in some cases sacrifice their very lives and the lives of their children the rank and file witness would do so without hesitation. And how do we know this? Because so many already have!

Are JW kids really better that Christendom's or even the world's?
by starScream ini dont mean to put down my cousin but if she and her boyfriend (now husband) have been loyal jws all their lives why is it that he was arrested for cocaine posession, (he was actually trafficking while a jw!!!!
)she got knocked up by him, and then they got married by a judge instead of an elder.
do these sound like jw kids or do they sound like the real jw kids that you dont see on the poster or cover of awake.

Are JW kids better then the worlds or Christendom’s? I can’t let that statement pass without challenge because that is the essence of the JW mindset pure and simple, that they are somehow apart from the rest of the other groups claiming to be the true God Squad.
