since phobia means "afraid of", i think the term homophobia should be clarified.

to most people i would be considered homophobic, howeve, i'm not afraid of homos, i just don't like them.

I would have to agree with you that "Queer as Folk" is not a completely accurate portrayal of gay life in Philly circa 2001, but you wouldn't get much of an argument from the show's producers either.

Each episode begins with a disclaimer that states that the show focuses on the lives of a group of gay friends and is not meant to be representative of the gay population.

However, I would also have to agree with JoelBear in that it's basically just a soap opera. One of the first things that came to mind when the show began was that these people really had nothing in common. But, as I was often reminded via the MST3K theme song..."Repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax!"

i recently watched a movie called instinct.

it starred anthony hopkins and told the story about a man who went to the wild to live with the gorillas.

while the premise may have seemed farfetched, the movie offered an insight i had not thought of till i saw how the story was told.

I want to applaud you for the work you are doing on the behalf of those who have no one to speak for them.

When I first learned of your situation through this forum I was apalled. I related your experience to a family member who is still a witness and the reaction that I was met with was utter disbelief.

Not disbelief that something like this was happening but disbelief that it had actually occurred. JW's are so blinded by the Ivory Watchtower that they can not see or comprehend something so completely amazing. I asked the person to whom I related the story whether or not they even believed that it was remotely possible for such a thing to occur and they assured me that it probably did but that it was for Jehovah to deal with.

Guess that is the infamous Christian love in action!

Kingdom Melodies on Morpheus?

i was just going through some of the messages on the board and found some hilarious song parodies.

simon's version of "from house to house" in particular had me in stitches.

all of this got me to thinking about some of the kingdom melodies that i did actually enjoy while still a jw and decided to look for some of them through morpheus.

All of this got me to thinking about some of the Kingdom Melodies that I did actually enjoy while still a JW and decided to look for some of them through Morpheus. Surprisingly, I didn't find much but what I did find was odd...

Managed to download a partial copy of song no. 100, "Laud Jehovah God". What was so strange about this was that the song was actually sung by someone. I don't recall ever hearing any recordings like that while I was still at the hall. Did the WBS ever release recordings like that? Thinking back I can't remember ever hearing anything about that while I was still active.

a few years a go when rehearsing our circut assembbly parts before the co.. a brother had a part geared for the young ones and he used the scripture in the psalms that talks about deliverence from the bird catcher.

well he warn the young ones;"when it come to setting traps satan knows just what to use to lure people into the trap in fact when it comes to setting traps satan is a ([master-baiter])".. when he sat down next to me after he finished his talk i told him i learned something i never knew from his talk.

he asked me what was that?.

Funny, funny stuff!!

This reminds me of a talk given by a brother at my former Hall several years ago.

This particular brother (also an elder) wasn't the best speaker in the world and was well known, at least by the younger members of the congregation, for using some very bizarre analogies in his talks.

He was speaking of evolution, I believe, and made reference to the fact that God had created peckerwoods. He kept on and on, saying this at least three or four more times before I realized he meant *woodpeckers*. Practically the entire hall was in stitches!

I'm more than a little relieved to know that I'm not the only one wondering whether or not Justin's gonna pull through.

As far as favorite characters go, I think Ted would have to be mine. Probably because I bear a little more than a passing resemblance to him...in personality at least.

What happened to "Jehovah's Christian Witn...

i have noticed in using the wt-cd that the use of the terms "jehovah's christian witnesses" and "christian witnesses of jehovah" dropped dramatically after 1980. is there a reason for that?

About ten or fifteen years ago, I recall there being a listing in our local newspaper for a group called "Jehovah's Christian Witnesses".

Strangely enough, the listing was in the classified ads. That didn't make much sense to me at the time, but I suppose they probably got the attention of the very people who regularly avoided the religion section of the newspaper.

In my Mom's case the listing worked because the very first thing she did was pick up the phone and call the number listed which played a recording bashing the WTBTS for inaccuracies and false prophecies regarding dates. She hung the phone up in disgust and said, "Apostates!"

Love QaF! I've been hooked since the first episode and absolutely hated seeing the first season end...not to mention the events of the final episode.

Each Sunday night I have to try to calm myself by realizing that there's only 5 more months until the new season starts! LOL!

the elders wanted to know if i purchased anything new, thinking i was under demon attack.

the only thing new in our household was a kitten.

I thought my local congregation was the only one that had become overwhelmed by the Smurf-burning (TM) mentality. I remember a particularly painful Smurf-burning (TM) incident where I was forced to burn a beloved Smurf graphic novel called "Astro-Smurf".

Was more hoopla ever stirred up by the JWs around something so innocent in the history of children's television? I can still recall how my Mom, with the utmost urgency, had me sit down and pen a letter to the WTBTS regarding whether or not the Smurfs were evil. LOL!

I still have their response here somewhere...which was a typical non-response, BTW.

This discussion reminded me of an episode of the Showtime series "Queer as Folk" in which one of the main characters, Emmett, attempts to go 'straight'...

Ted: "We wanted you to know that we still love you. Maybe not as much as Jesus. Almost. And we're going to miss you."
Michael: "Especially the way you dance with your hands above your head, and your Liza impersonation. That's the way I'll always remember you."
Emmett: "Thanks. But I don't think God appreciates it quite as much as you do."

Why did you get baptized?

was it for love of the kingdom hall and jehovah?

pressure .. felt like you had to?

for me it was because all my friends my age had gotten baptized.. and it was left up to me to do it too.. to fit in i guess.

Hi all,

I'm a long-time lurker, but haven't really been courageous enough to step forward and post...until now!

In all honesty, I'd have to say that the main reason I got baptized was to make my Mom happy. Admittedly, it's not the best reason in the world, but it's the truth.

I was 17, just graduated from high school, unsure as to what the future held for me and trying to help my family make it through after my parent's divorce. My Dad was an unbeliever and my Mom had been baptized shortly after I was born so I was raised as a Witness.

I can still remember the ever-so-subtle pressure exerted on me the summer before my baptism. My sister (who was 12 at the time) had gotten baptized that summer and my Mom began throwing around some very scary words that I've seen mentioned above already: the age of accountability.

At the time I felt like that was the scariest concept in the world. It didn't seem to matter to the members of my congregation that only Jehovah could read your heart and mind, but if you were past the age of accountability and unbaptized...well, they just wouldn't want to be in your shoes.
