Just wondering if the main reason for our existence is to suffer, then what's the point of being here? Suffering is common, but what for?

Is This a Universal Characteristic of Religion?
by hamilcarr inthanks to all who participated in the moral values discussion, i think it was a 'high'-quality (wink at zico --- from 'the highest year') debate.
some posters rightly claimed i was too rash in my generalisations of religion and atheism.
so, i kept on searching for the universal characteristics of religion, i mean those features common to all forms of worship.

Far enough north in the summer the sun actually goes in a circle. In Edmonton it glows in the night sky for a bit. Never total darkness at the end of June.

Part of what is going on here is demographics. More people are ageing rapidly. As they get older, they realize that time is no longer on their side. The Witness story makes sense to them. So what harm is there? One might do what is required to receive eternal life. What do you have to lose. Your life is in the past. That's not so bad. What's bad is people who have their whole lives ahead of them and blow it all.
The other part is that the numbers can be pulled out of a hat. Does the society hire from outside to audit the numbers. I think not.
The interesting thing is that the Witnesses are at the 25th position out of 25 and there is no mention of the "Atheist" religion. Well- - some do actually call it a religion, so I would like to know just how many have no affiliation or no religion at all.

Is it different than the curry used by South Asians? Tons of it are used in our city. We have the largest population of East Indians here outside of India itself. You might be able to find it here. Try typing a search for Punjabi Market on Main Street Vancouver. If it's Indian , we got it all!!

We inherited 2 black felines that chase each other around the house for hours. The little one knocked a large ceramic pot plant onto the floor. It is now in many pieces. But they are kids-our kids and they sleep with us most nights and would spend money to keep them quite healthy. But alas, we do know there is a limit. For now they DO greet us at the door-mostly for food, but that's ok.
Good thing I have no idea what that bumper sticker really means-"heard if you hit a cat in the head w/ a hammer ...it blinks"
Funny that I cannot get their nails cut, never mind giving them a shot!

How Would YOU Help a JW That Is Questioning The Religion?
by minimus inhow would you help them see it's not "the truth"?

At first I thought it was important to help others out , and I still think it's a good thing to do, but who forced anyone to board the Titanic. Trying not to be cynical here but just how long does it take to smell something rotten?
I have often discussed the attitude of the cult with my JW associate and I truly believe he deserves what he got. A great big pig in a poke. Quitting the Watchtower is like quitting smoking. It seems like an addiction. But have you ever nagged a smoker to quit? Good luck!
If someone truly has had enough, they themselves have to break free of their own accord. Once you question someone why you are still in, you automatically trigger their defense mechanism. Seems like a hopeless cause. HOWEVER.....
Just the other day I was working with my JW associate and on the way home he told me he missed the days of Easter egg colouring and the egg hunt. I thought....what's up with that? Apostate thoughts from a die hard? Maybe there is hope for him after all.

Salvation as in saving oneself? Saving from what? Eternal hell? Being destroyed? Being stuck at the pearly gates? I personally believe that no matter what you do or think, we all are heading for the same place. So why worry about it and miss all what life offers.
Salivation is more to my liking. As in at the all you can eat buffet. Much more fun.
