Yeah... I just saw it Friday night (4-3-09) too, and that is exactly what I thought as we were leaving the theater. My wife, who did not know me in my JW days, was with me and I told her the same thing, explaining the similarity of the JW belief. Good movie! go watch it and then let me know what you think.

When you went out in field service

I really hated the knocking on doors part, always hoped no one would answer so I could leave an outdated magazine under their mat and count it on my service report. But the Shakey's Pizza Buffett afterwards for lunch was the best!! Hanging out in service with the friends was fun too, since those were the only friends we were allowed to have and associate with.

To reply a little more on-topic: I myself used to think - about people who got DFed or DAed - "How can they be so dumb as to do that now , so close to the end!?"
I felt it would indeed be a shame to throw ones life away like that.
I'm sure it was also what the JWs who lived in the early 1940s felt, when they chose to put off having children because Armageddon was so close.
Yep. I got DF in 1974!!! How dumb was that??? A year before Armageddon. I remember crying in the KH bathroom as I told my then, best friend, that I was gonna be out and I told him what happened. The trial was the next day. He started crying and said "not when we are right at the door of the new system!" But got reinstated at then end of 74, guess it was to get me inside the ark before the door closed.

But wait a minute... technically, don't those who die get resurrected and have a second chance? If "the wages of sin is death", wouldn't she have paid her debt? I've heard so many different versions of this theory (light) that I'm not sure where the "new light" stands on this thought. I know the understanding of what happens has changed drastically over the years. Have any of you received "new light"?

I got DF when my GF and I got intimately involved. She wasn't a JW, only attending with her Mom. I then got reinstated after marrying her and "straighted out" and she got baptized. Then we had some kids. Ok, so that brings you up to speed. :) So, I had noticed that one of the Elders who participated in the DF trial used to pay special attention to my wife. But we blew it off believing that he just took special interest in us as a young couple. After all, he was an elder! But one day, he came over to the house when I was working and he stopped in to "visit", and to see the new baby. While socializing with my wife in the living room, he asked her to take him to the bedroom to see the new baby. Of course by this time my wife felt weird about the situation and directed him alone. After a few more minutes he left. Later that night we got a call from his wife (a special pioneer) asking what he was doing at our place and all kinds of unusual questions. Guess he got in trouble. Come to find out years later he was DF for having an affair with a tennant of one of his rentals who was paying him rent with her body instead of $. I always felt that he was too interested in our DF trial, wanting to know too many details. Made me wonder too if he feltt, due to our situation, that my wife was an "easy target". It's a weird feeling to sit in a DF trial answering very intimate private questions and having to be pretty graphic! Makes ya wonder how many of these elders are actually getting off on this.

Taste/Scent Related Memories - Have you ever had one of those....
by Crumpet inhave you ever had one of those intoxicating moments where you are walking down a supermarket aisle and you suddenly caught a perfume that you'd not smelt since you were small and it brought back a flood of memories, your first grade teacher, an auntie?
or a taste?
i just had a taste moment - i kind of feel bad about admitting to it though.

Not affordable here in San Diego, CA unless you already have a house with lots of equity and are looking to downgrade. A 3br house goes for about $600,000. For $300,000 you might be able to find a 2br condo somewhere, but not necessarily in the best of neighborhoods.

Sorry to hear that. There must have been something he was experiencing that he felt was worse than death.
There was a former elder here in San Diego Co who was probably the person who I looked up to the most in all of my years in the truth. He was very well respected, had a great theocratic family, was in charge of the hall project in our area, etc. I felt that if there was ever anyone who had his head on straight is was him. Well, maybe not so true. Lost contact with him after I left the organization, saw him at an expo one time years after and when talking to him found that he was out of the truth also. He had gotten involved in gambling, got divorced, and remarried a casino dealer (got involved with more than just gambling, huh?). Well, a few years ago, I was shocked to find that he also committed suicide. Wow! From leading elder to suicide. Life had to have gone from bad to worse to want to end it. We just don't know how people rationalize their inner struggles. Only they truly know how much pain they are in and this is the only immediate cure they can see.

Faithful and Discrete Slave
by Johnna inif it is true that the slave class is here to lead the organization, and their numbers on earth are still in the thousands, why is it only just a handful at the headqtrs that send out the spiritual food?
i have known many "annointed" ones over my course of involvement and none of them were ever called on for their input, guidance, counsel, etc... much less to have a turn to lead the work in ny.
aren't they all supposed to be doing the guidance work on the earth?

What was the name of your band? I remember going to go see some brothers in a band at a resturant one night.
Thanks for the instructions on quotes! The band was "Paloma" back then. We played at Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore and Temecula. Later, after I quit, it transformed over the years into various names with several members changing here and there. Most recently that I remember, it was called KikBak, playing in various clubs and events in So Ca, and opening for Tierra and Malo in some shows. Although KikBak is no longer performing, the nucleus of the band, my x-brother-in-law and former elder, still has the band and they played at a casino in Valley Center area (north san diego co) over the holidays last month (1997).
