  Going out with a bang

  after much deliberation, i decided to go "out" at the end of a public talk.

  it didn't go down too well, but at least i was able to give some of my reasons for leaving.. i've put some of the details on my homepage.

  i'll update it more when i get the time and the strength.

  i want to thank you for your recent posts about your experiences coming out of the religion.

  i've always thought that personal experiences are more powerful and convincing than arguing doctrinal points.

  although there's a place for such arguments and discussions, seeing what other people have been through and how they've dealt with their loss of faith and extracting themselves from the religion are most compelling and helpful for people who are going through the same experience.. my parents are in a difficult position; they no longer believe in the religion, but they feel that if they were to just quit, their two children who are still jws will shun them.

  i was never baptised when i attended the kingdom hall so i went to the meetings with sholder length hair (with my jw parents).

  one time i had been approached by the elders concerning this matter.

  they asked me if i planned to cut my hair and progress in the truth and get baptised.

  i have a question.

  i have asked it in a private discussion with a fundamentalist who cowardly ignored the whole premise of the thought and am hoping there is someone here who can address it.. i am aware of the fact that abortion is one hot button topic.

  it is not my intention to make this a debate about abortion.

  Mort Sahl has the right take, I think:

  Democrats don't want anyone to be born -- what with abortion and birth control etc. But if you actually manage to be born, they'll make sure you're taken care of for the rest of your life.

  Republicans want everyone to be born, as long as you promise not to live long enough to collect on your Social Security.

  i have allways thought that the single greatest asset the jws have is the nickname "the truth".. trying to get through to our freinds and parents the sickening facts about "the truth", we are constantly stymied.

  by the sentence "i still beleive its the truth".. this is the equialent of calling your law firm "the honest ones".

  or your shop, "the best".. only better, much better.. jws mistake a concept, "truth" with "the truth".
