Believers and Non-Believers - What does this scripture mean?
by cantleave ingenesis 30:37-39english standard version (esv).
37 then jacob took fresh sticks of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the sticks.
38 he set the sticks that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs, that is, the watering places, where the flocks came to drink.

Why won't JWs have "civilized" debates with home owners?
by ilikecheese init seems kind of crazy to go to someone's house touting your religion as truth and then not even defend your own beliefs.
why do jws stop the chat if someone just tries to calmly reason/debate with them?
i'm not talking about crazy preachers who start slamming bibles and yelling about how they need jesus or something.

They don't want to talk to me because I always tell them, "You may be sincere but you're in a cult. Go look it up on the internet." Of course, they won't do it openly but you never know what seeds of doubt you can plant.
Outlaw, I've missed you. Love you, man!
I've been on a sabbatical from JWD for awhile because it makes me depressed sometimes.

I'm a believer. I find the "extra" books of the Bible to be interesting reading. I'm Roman Catholic but find the Orthodox and their Bible very interesting.
I've always been told that a lot of discussion about which books made it in and which books made it out had to do with politics, i.e., the Jews didn't accept the Septuagint which Jesus used because some of the books were written by Jews in exile. The men involved in all of this choosing were rather ethnocentric.
All of the books were written by men and the canon of scripture was codified by men. I don't see the Bible as a "literal" document or one without error and believe that biblical scholarship can only help us understand the context more and more as time goes by.
So there, a comment from a believer.

Some odd developments
by dissonance_resolved inso things are not making sense at all here in my fade.
as i had posted earlier, i had a long intense talk the other night with my husband where i thought it was crystal clear just where i'm at right now with the wtbts.
then, the same week, he's not feeling well and asks me to take the kids to the mid-week meeting.

DR, read up on the new changes in the July WT and tell your family you're just so confused that they'd abandon the doctrine about 1914 and the FDS. Tell them you just don't know if you can accept this 180 degree turnaround. Act really broken up but stay home and do the depression thing, world shattered because the WTS is not what they say they are, etc. Might work. A similar doctrine change worked in my SIL's favor and she got out unscathed.

Got a angry letter from our oldest son today we are very hurt from it.
by TotallyADD inwhen i got home today from work my wife showed me a 5 page letter from our oldest son.
he basically said he does not what anything to do with us because of all the wrong things we did as parents to him and his brother.
he blames us for not being there for him and we are toxic parents.

Totally ADD, I do like your response to your son. However, I want to caution you about one thing. I told off my JW mother years ago and I've never looked back. I don't want a relationship with her, now or ever. Just know that offering an olive branch is the right thing to do, but your son may have so many issues of his own that he wants to put people he considers "toxic" out of his life for good.
Best of luck to you for a reconciliation.

British zone visit from David Splane - a report from the special meeting in Glasgow
by slimboyfat inwell i went to a "special meeting" in the armadillo today where a 2 & 1/2 hour programme was relayed from london at 1pm.
apparently the letters of invitation only went out a month or so ago and not all congregations were invited.
there were 2,900 of us from around scotland.

Maybe his comments about forgetting things that happened in the past was a veiled reference to those who were sexually molested by someone in the KHall.

"I try to be loving, forgiving, and kind...." Her "love for the whole brotherhood" will wear off when her loving, forgiving, kind attitude is not reciprocated by anyone in the congregation. I give her six months until she feels just like she did at the beginning of the "poem."

This is so difficult
by dissonance_resolved inso i woke up a few months ago and had no idea what to expect.
at first i was outraged that i had been lied to all these years and so sad that i lost so many years of my life to a cult.
in the past couple of weeks though, i've actually been having second thoughts.

Poor D-R. I wish I had words of wisdom for you but I'm DF'd and haven't spoken to my mom or siblings in years. All I can tell you is that, after gut-wrenching pain in the beginning, you get used to it and eventually don't miss them anymore. I really couldn't care less that I don't see my family. I've made my own post-JW life and am quite content, but it took a long time to get there. I remember those early days and they are painful, to say the least. Just know that it is worth it in the end.
JW love is conditional love. I don't want people in my life who only "love" me if they can control me. Good luck, dearie.
