My insane JW friend takes me to lunch...
by sooner7nc inyesterday, i get a call at work from my old jw buddy, who btw doesn't know my true feelings on religion.
he offers to buy lunch so we go to a local burger joint, sit down, and start swapping stories like always.
we see each other once or twice a week, share many common interests, and generally get along well.

It is downright sickening...these poor kids, not having a chance to think for themselves, to make a decent life for themselves...just being brain-washed perpetually with such nonsense. And it is all they know, so they accept it blindly. And it's written so childishly yet condescendingly.

Cagegiver...just one more word of advice....don't let her get onto Paxil. That stuff is dreadful and you end up worse on it than you were before you went on it. It is highly addictive and has some really rotten side-effects.

I have a serious panic disorder and have been on meds for years. Having fear instilled in me since infancy in that insane religion wrecked my brain. Your brain chemistry actually becomes altered and the only thing that can help is medication. Cognitive therapy helps some people, but really....panic attacks are horrid. You feel like you are literally about to die. You cannot breathe...different people have different symptoms, but a sense of overwhelming dread leaves most immobile.
Get your girl the help she needs....and don't waste time doing it. It is not her fault; make her realize that. If you are a diabetic, you need insulin and take it. If you have high cholesterol, you can take a statin drug to get it to a normal level. If your brain chemistry is off, there are medications that can fix it..... you have to do it!

Ladies, how do you feel about be called a "weaker vessel"?
by sacolton inonly after joining the jehovah's witnesses did i ever hear women referred to as "weaker vessels".
how does that make you feel?.
-

I like Blondie's testosterone overview.
Regarding the "weaker vessel"...I always thought it rather insulting, but the Bible was written in stiffly patriarchal times and women were considered sub-prime beings, much as you see in Islamic cultures today. The patriarchal society succeeded in stifling the female for eons, but that has gradually given way in enlightened areas and women are able to function on even footing with men.
We have women doctors, women in politics, women lawyers, corporate executives... characters from both the Old, Hebrew testament as well as the New Greek would be in shock and total disruption of the senses if they saw life as it is today.
I believe in the wonderful differences between men and women and appreciate how if you have the right man, you can be a perfect unit together. Or a man having the right woman. Too often it doesn't work out that way.... Some women are far stronger bodily than some men, and some are not. Some are far more brilliant, others not... we are all people...human beings.... with much variety of personality, capabilities, talents and capacities.

It's different for everyone. Some quit cold turkey, some gradually fade. I faded very slowly and really didn't even realize I was doing it at the time.
I was going out of rote, habit...when it is all you ever knew for religion, you accept it. I hated the judgementalness, the hypocrisies and the boring, mind-numbingness. It was all I could do to stay awake at meetings, they were so dammm boring. I quit the TMS years ago... I had panic attacks everytime I'd enter an assembly....so it got to the point where my husband wouldn't want to go because he knew we'd get there and have to turn around and come back home. KH panic attacks weren't so bad....I couldn't do FS for years.....and never pieced it together that my brain was telling me QUIT THIS FOOLISHNESS!!!
A few years ago, I was down to nothing, but still thought of myself as a Witnesss, inactive....and it was the day of the Memorial. I was beside myself all day long, fretting because I felt I HAD to go, but really didn't want to. My husband asked me late in the day if I was still planning on going to the "shindig"....yep, that's what he called it....and I said yes, we have to. Then it came time to get dressed and I couldn't do it...and I went to him and said I didn't want to..............and he told me then and there I never had to go to a KH again in my life. I felt this enormous weight lift off me....seriously. It was the most liberating and peaceful feeling.
I've never looked back. I read stuff here for several months before actually starting to post. We have Crisis of Conscience and have both read it. It was no rude awakening for me, though because my father had been an elder and he was badly abused by his "peers". I knew a lot of the BS that goes on, so my respect for the organization had been shot years ago. My hubbie is still playing footsie with them...an elderly ex-elder calls on him. Very nice sweet deluded man....but I will have nothing to do with them.

home but hiding....smart person inside house when witnesses knock on door
householder....the person holds the house... it's tricky to do....probably no one has mastered that art yet.
bible study....this is a person being indoctrinated
avoid the spirit of independent thinking......don't think for yourself....god gave you a brain NOT to use.
mag route.....a series of houses a witness can drop magazines off at, and maybe receive a donation.
university education....a very, very, very bad thing that people do because they want to make something of themselves and their life
the drama.....a bad show put on at a convention, where people dress silly and lip synch very badly
the emblems....that's the matzo and vino at the memorial
the memorial.....not a funeral...but an annual event where a very monotonous talk is given and matzos and vino passed around
partaker....someone who eats some of the matzo and drinks some of the vino. may or may not be appropriate for him/her to do...no one really knows
announcements....a very short part of a convention where the entire audience is allowed to stand up.
get your time in.....this means that you have attained your monthly field service hour goal, which originally was quota, but that went the way of the dinosaur.
dinosaur.......big big "animals" that a lot of witnesses don't believe really ever walked the earth.

Oh my oh my....well for one thing, they'd come around and be giving everyone the business for having homes and jobs. Well who is going to feed and house them if everyone quits their job and runs around pioneering? Everyone would show up for the meetings...people would dress better...the talks would be of much higher quality than the usual...all hypocrites. Why should everyone's behavior magically change just because there were a couple of people there who usually weren't???
One cong I was in, though...there was a very vicious "sister". This woman was really horrible and caused untold grief. She thought she was the holiest of the holies and she only spoke to certain individuals she deemed acceptable. CO shows up and she's flitting around all smiles and lovey-dovey with everyone, including all of her victims that she'd tried to get into trouble. I remember certain elders as well who ordinarily were far too good to condescend to say hello to certain ones....all of a sudden they're acting like the best buddy of the same people they usually avoided like the plague.
On the other hand, over the years, there were a few CO and DO couples that were real sweethearts. One in particular stands out to me...this man was such a dear. They were older and stayed at our house. Were very kind, compassionate people. They were very concerned because they'd never worked, had no family, no $$$ and knew that their health was such that continuing in the work would not be possible much longer. I felt so bad for them...absolutely nowhere to turn. I told them they could come live with us and I'd support them. They ended up retiring to somewhere with her family...but it just shows how "loving" the big shots in Brooklyn are to their hard workers, loyal supporters. So so sad.

Back when I was still going to the hall, sporadically, there was a young man who had been df'ed and that poor kid was always there at each and every meeting sitting all alone and forlorn in the back...for literally over two years...maybe three... i always wondered why on earth or how on earth he could continue to come and be denied acceptance back into the fold. makes me wonder if he is still sitting there to this day. i certainly hope not. As someone mentioned, it is all so demoralizing. They want you to stick out like a sore thumb in society in general, and then they pull it on victims in the congregation. And call it ENCOURAGEMENT?!?!?!?!?!? try TORTURE.
