World War I started because Europe was a powder keg waiting to blow up. In retrospect, its a bit surprising it didn't start with the Balkan Wars in 1912 and 1913. If it had not started in 1914 something would have set it off in that time frame. Whatever happened they would have found a way to spin it as fulfillment of prophecy.

by JW_Rogue inwhen someone says "merry christmas" or "happy holidays".... a normal person: responds in kind.
a jw: says "thank you" or launches into a speech about christmas' pagan roots.
when a couple is celebrating their wedding anniversary... .

Actual comments after growing my beard out again.
worldly person "That looks good on you." My siblings (also non jw) "That makes you look a lot like Dad."
Elder I ran into in a grocery store "I see you just got back from vacation, you'll have to shave before you come to meeting."
(He didn't know it, but I'd already been to the Hall for the last time.)

I hope they do a regular KH memorial service for him. That would be an excellent opportunity for the rest of the world to see what they're really like. And no, I don't ever remember them saying anything like this before. -

Question About the New Headquarters at Warwick
by Wild_Thing inthe jws are known for building kingdom halls and assembly halls with slave ...er i mean ... volunteer labor, but this new self sufficient headquarters seems a bit more complex.. so who's building it?
did they hire a firm with educated engineers and architects who know what they are doing?
or are they still using billy*, who learned how to lay tile from his uncle bob*?.

The plans would have had to meet code before they could get a permit to begin construction. No matter who was doing the work, they would have had to pass inspections from the local land use and construction agency as work proceeded. -

A question regarding district convention finances
by JeffT ini don't recall ever hearing a financial report at one of the big summer conventions.
do i have blocked memories, or are they even more secretive about money at that level than they are at the circuit events?
i'm doing a little research on the instructions for handling circuit assembly accounts and that got me curious about the bigger conventions.

I'm doing a little research on the instructions for handling circuit assembly accounts and that got me curious about the bigger conventions. For example do they have an expected "donation" number per attendee? What does the district do with surplus funds.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

2016-4-4-BOE!--Scanning and Sending Medical Records through Emails!
by Atlantis ini was always under the impression that only "licensed" persons had the authority to do this.. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
2016-4-4-boe scanning and sending medical records through emails!.
.. this is the last paragraph of the main body of the boe without the top and bottom, which revealed the congregation and information which could expose our source.. .. "therefore, brothers, i appeal to you to make sure that a copy of the new add for every publisher is kept in alphabetical order, perhaps using an a-z filing system to expedite it's location and so that it can be kept neat, clean and legible for scanning and emailing for up to 4 years, after which a new copy should be completed.

I second the above. Your are a valued source of insider information.
Another possible source of odd language: maybe this was originally in another language and somebody ran it through google translate. I've seen some real howlers produced that way.

I was always under the impression that only "licensed" persons had the authority to do this
Is this in the United States? Medical records are protected under HIPPA, failure to comply with the law can lead to all sorts of trouble. Each and every person who has medical information in those files must have given them written consent to share that information with each and every person or organization they share it with. So each individual has to have signed a consent form to allow the secretary to handle the information. They must also have signed a consent form for whoever he's going to turn the files over to when needed. They also have to have signed a consent form for each and every individual or organization they intend to give the information to.
This could easily lead to massive lawsuits.

Suppose I ought to introduce myself.....
by Andy Dufresne ini've left a couple of semi-"humorous" remarks, but not yet said a proper hello....but firstly thank you, to all, for this site and all its comments.i have been lurking on this site for 4-5 years, awake for 5-6 years and seriously fading for the last 4 years.
i am now "out" and widely considered "out" by the congregation but due being very cautious and playing a very long game, (and having a wife who understand the repercussions of blowing the whistle on the few viewpoints i have discussed with her) i have not been df'd of da'd.
this forum has been a crutch and guide as well as helping me wake - and the humour many on here use has been a welcome relief.

Welcome, great screen name. I've always thought that movie is a good allegory for escaping the Watchtower. -

I will admit that I don't know much about English law. I am generally familiar with how US courts work, and the basis of a lot of our law can be found in English common law.
The big issue here is did he really commit fraud. In US Courts the truth is an absolute defense. If he committed fraud, they didn't slander him when they said he committed fraud. It I was representing the plaintiff the first questions I'd ask would be "Were the police called? What proof do you have that there was fraud? If you did not call the police, why not? Did the victim of the fraud call the police, or sue for damages?"
This could be an interesting one to watch, if the DF'd him on the heresay of a couple of other people, he may have a case.
