  What made you look behind the jw curtain?

  i was listening to a lunchtime call in radio show about jws and the personal experiences of being disfellowshiped, and a former elder called in saying he was disfellowshiped for asking about jws and their involvement in the un in the 1990s ,and he just said look it up.. thinking that it was a made up lie ,so i looked it up and it was true even a letter confirming it from the un itself and that led me here and to jwfacts and further research into the history and teachings of jw and walked out the door about 5 years ago.

  I really believed it all -- hook, line, & sinker, as they say. . . . Holy Spirit direction and all that. . . . until I experienced things that made no sense. An elder who had been carrying on an affair for 8 years, including the time when he was appointed "by HS". When a situation involving a prominent elder accused of embezzlement when before 2 COs, the DO, and the Service Dept and all accepted his deny deny deny strategy. (But I KNEW the facts.) Once again, the H.S. must have been asleep at the Chariot's wheel. An elder assigned the keynote talk at the convention, who had been having an affair with a gal from work and was planning to divorce his wife AFTER the convention because he believed the H.S. had obviously determined he was the BEST person to deliver the information at the convention.

  Either the H.S. is easily fooled or. . . . . it's all bullshit. You can guess which option won that debate.

  Experiences After Leaving

  i am writing to ask if anyone cares to share their experience and/or offer advice for people leaving.

  i was raised in the religion, and both my parents died when i was very young.

  i recently stopped associating because my conscience no longer allows me to preach or support the organization.

  Don't feel it is necessary to have them understand what you went through.

  Because they can't!

  Most people see JWs as just another small, "harmless" religious group and the only things they know about them is they (used to) wake them up on Saturday mornings, they don't believe in Jesus (all that D2D ministry and people are still confused) based on the fact they do not celebrate Christmas, and then some who read the news may be aware of the prohibition on blood transfusions, though more likely, they know of a JW who died refusing one. More than likely many of them think JWs refuse all medical care (confusing them with Christian Scientists).

  Serious sinner?

  with the statement in the study watchtower this sunday, that stop serving jehovah is a serious sin, the following:.

  - can i conclude now, that we, (i, wife and 2 children), since 2008 pomo and no longer active in any religious activity, are serious sinners for jehovahs witnesses?.

  writing this in a watchtower, a statement like that, could have big implications.. it makes me so sad.

  If we we missed a meeting it was noticed.

  I recall meeting a prominent (because he is wealthy) elder while out shopping. He mentioned that he had heard I was missing meetings. I assured him I had not "missed" any of them!

  2024 Annual Meeting Doctrinal Change

  a change to their doctrine came from jackson.

  this isn't a transcript of his whole speech but i thought i would try and get some of his main speech in writing.. at around 1hr26 minutes he starts talking about some dangerous thinking in feeling there is some wiggle room in regards to the schedule for the gt.

  but you see, we need to be careful about what we are thinking about the number of anointed ones left on earth.

  No reason to change unless you feel the need you have to.

  I think a person often ignores the obvious (or what should be) until it affects them personally. They can turn a blind eye or ignore the "rumors" of child abuse UNTIL IT IS THEIR CHILD OR GRAND CHILD. They can ignore an unjust DFing when it is some distant acquaintance in the next congregation, but WHEN THEY (or their family member) get effed over for some minor indiscretion while the prominent elder's kid gets their serious incident overlooked and a slap on the risk, THEN their eyes are opened.

  Then they see the injustice.

  Then they see that the claim of Hocus Pocus Holy Spirit in the decision making is total bullsheit.

  I'm sure everyone here can recommend a book that helped them.

  Crisis of Conscience (Ray Franz), of course.

  I also strongly encourage reading Combating Cult Mind Control (Steven Hassan). I put it off and once I started it I couldn't put it down. He writes about his experience with the Moonies, but it proved to me that JWs are like the Poster Child for a Cult. JWs "check the box" on every single criteria for a Cult. It is impossible to pretend it's coincidence. The "mind control", "information control", etc.

  Let's review! It's a Cult!
  

  Edited to add: The point above about making new friends and a new network is right on. That is NOT an easy task. As a JW you think it's just an automatic thing. Everyone loves you. Everyone is your friend. That's not how it works in the "real world". But if you give people a chance, they will do the same.
