Yeru,
I have an elder's manual, and I never was an elder. I got it at a BRCI conference from a guy who had just left the religion and Bethel. He took 40 of them from Bethel. He sold them for five bucks each. I understand that they are very expensive on EBay. No, I don't want to sell mine. I do believe that copies of it are available on the internet, which you could copy for the content.
For those of you with old books, don't destroy them. They are useful for research and some are worth a lot of money.

Returning 20 years of JW books to KH need opinions
by SpunkyChick inmy mom and i have been cleaning out the basement and gathered over 20 years worth of jw books, magazines, tracts (some dating from the 1950's!).
we are playing with the idea to return the jw material in a box, with the words "we quit" and a xeroxed copy of the cover coc next sunday morning in front of the local kh.
does anyone have any better/more sarcastic ideas?

When I left, I had a large number of JW relatives. So, did my wife. We decided to do the slow fade. This bought us time to think through our new life, while maintaining a relationship with our family.
One fortunate thing in our case, was that I got a job that required us to relocate. Just before we moved, they sent us a JC letter by registered mail. We did not sign for it, and it was returned unopened to the Kingdom Hall. When we moved, they did not pursue the matter. -

Getting Old
by Undecided ini'm getting near 68 and i can't do the things i used to do without some pain.. yesterday i worked on the lawn mower and i had to lift it onto the pinic table, wow!
i didn't know they made them so much heavier now.. today i'm replacing the brake pads on my 4x4 truck.
my back just won't hold up long enough to finish both wheels.

Undecided,
I know what you mean. I used to mow my lawn with no breaks. Now, at the age of 62, I have to take frequent breaks, and it takes me about twice a long to finish. Hey, I figure that it is better to pace myself than have a heart attack. Like you, I plan to continue with physical work as long as I can.
I am especially careful in the winter when shoveling snow. I have heard of too many stories of heart attacks from snow shoveling.
The woman across the street is an inspiration to me. She is 95, and takes the bus almost every day, to have a lunch down town or at the mall. -

As Waiting pointed out FF had several skills, not just a very good memory. Thus, would have to have been highly intelligent.
Regarding common sense. No, a high IQ does not garantee common sense. However, stupidity does garantee a lack of common sense. -

Asleif,
I do understand your point. Someone's measure of intelligence should be based on the cultural context within which thay are taking the test. And, tests should be developed within the culture they live. I think this point is axiomatic. Tests are developed with this concept in mind, and there is careful attention given to which tests and which test items transfer to other cultures.
Now, with that said, all cultures have individual differences in people's ability to adapt and learn. So, in the example of the culture that you describe, there are individual differences in learning ability, as in all others. Some people are more successful than others. It is a fact of life. I am sure that you have observed this in your every day life, without the benefit of tests. -

Hillary,
Thank you for your interest and concern for me and my dear wife. We are doing relatively well. Things are improving for Jan, not as quickly as hoped, but improving, nonetheless.
Onacruse,
When discussing an issue, please differentiate the comments of the posters. I said that Franz was of relative intelligence. I did not address his ability as a scholar. I believe it was Hillary who brought up his being a scholar.
Now, you are saying that someone can be a president of a major corporation/organization and not be intelligent? Prove it with research, not assertions. Give one specific example, a case study, where a growing organization was run by someone of low intelligence. -

Petespal,
"Academic types" does not equate to all people of high intelligence. The stereotype of the egg head academic type does not fit all people who are very bright. I certainly not think of the Wright Brothers as academic types, although they were very good at using academic methods, even though they never went to college. Even among the academic types, the stereotype does not fit, certainly not in my case. I worked my way through college in a factory, so I do not fit the academic type by any means. -

I do believe that old Freddy was a smart man. You can not rise to be president of any large organization without being of relative intelligence. I do, believe that the Watchtower statements are a tad exaggerated.

Petespal,
What is SLD?
Since I am dumber than a box of bricks, I don't know how to get to your in box or e-mail, so would you send me an e-mail, because I would like to know your area of interest and expertise. (I could blame my problem on Simon. I am on webtv, the dumb person's choice on getting here, so not all of the features here work for me.)
Now, regarding music education or music in general, isn't it true that the very good musicians are assessed, and are not they assessed in standardized situations, to determine their musical competence and their musical future? I would call that a standardized test. Think about it.
