I think if you check the account you will find he did not have to wait for 14 years to get the pretty girl nookie. It was shortly after the honeyommon with Leah, but he still agreed to work another 7 years. Just a minor clarification.

Is Hatred Really Just "Loving Less"?
by TMS inthe bible says the jacob hated leah, the gal he was tricked into marrying after seven years of hard work at minimum wage.
for many years watchtower publications have tried to take the sting out of jacob's disdain for wife #1 by saying that he really didn't hate leah, just "loved her less".. i think he hated her.. its not that hard to understand.
if a man works seven long years, each night going to sleep with visions of a certain bright-eyed girl and then gets stuck with her dull-eyed plain sister, resentment could build.

Sincere doubt on the Sovereign issue
by Sincere Inquirer inthis is the first time i post to this forum in order to find new ideas about a doubt that has been torturing me.
no one in my congregation was capable of providing me with a reasonable explanation, and the society did not answered my letter about this sincere doubt of mine.

Thinking is a bitch when you look at issues such as this. If you try and apply the WT theology you will keep drawing blanks. The sovrenty issue makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Let's see God wanted to make a point, when Satan tricked Eve and got her to eat of the fruit, then God punishes man and Satan gets a six thousand year party to prove his point. That is like saying if you are a passenger in a car and the driver breaks the speed limit, you get the death penalty, he gets a new car. How is that for fair?
The only way to look at this is to reject what religion trys to get you to believe about God and THINK! When you do this you lose the guilt and all the other crap these rightous nuts have thought up. Live each day for all it is worth, help your fellow man to the best of your ability and if God has a greater plan I am sure he will want people like you instead of self rightous, born again, santimonious, God in my corner, turd heads.

I was wondering how much does the average JW spend a year on books?
I used to donate about $50 a month plus donations, but I think that is a bit high for most. A more conservative estimate would be around $20 a month. Annually $700-$300 respectively.
Do they also do a collection at their meetings and conventions?
While there is no collection, a bit of misinformation is generally provided at each assembly where accounting creates numbers that make it look like they are deep in the red toward the end of the assembly. This announcement is always made to guilt everyone into digging deep before they leave. On the local level announcements are generally made monthly about accounts and the need to pay the bills at the end of the month. Contribution boxes are prominently placed by the bulletin board at each Kingdom Hall.
How much do you think my wife spends per year on the Borg?
A typical unbelieving spouse will donate $10 - $20 a week plus donations obtained in field service. This of course can vary depending on the financial resources of the spouse.

"We do it for the Brothers"
by Duncan ini remembered this just the other day, and thought id make a post of it.. back in 1971, during my first year of pioneering, i was kind of adopted by one of the sisters in the congregation who was keen to get me friendly with her son (a teenage boy just a little younger than myself) with a view to getting him interested in the pioneer service.. kevin spent part of that summer shadowing me everywhere i went, learning to be a pioneer, and many times i was invited to meals at his house.. his family had been in the truth for ever.
his parents, rose and albert, were absolute congregation stalwarts.
i gradually began to get a bit irritated with them, since it was clear after a few weeks of looking after kevin, and accepting some (not all, just the minimum number for politeness sake) of his many invitations to his house.

There was a running joke that said if we ever start having food shortages all you need is a simple survival kit:
1. 45 pistol.
2. Address of nearest mormon. -

What Will Occur In 2012 When Mayan Calender Ends?
by Big Jim inwhat will occur in 2012 when the mayan calendar ends?
when people say the mayan calendar ends in 2012, they're referring to the end of one 5125-year cycle that began in 3114 b.c.
this cycle ends on december 21, 2012 (although some peg the date as the 22nd), marking the end of the mayan cyclical calendar.

Am I Really Hurting Myself?? Prov. 14:12
by Monica ini've been communicating back and forth with an old friend from my teen years, who is now an elder.
i used to be a jw when i knew him and he was not very spiritual so i was completely surprised at his current status.
(before i get questions on if i am "interested" in this elder, i just want to say that i'm happily married to a super-cool guy and have no intimate feelings for this elder whatsoever.

How about this:
I appreciate your concern about my spirituality, but why don't we make a deal. If you will stop passing verbal judgments on me as a wicked worldly person, I will try not to offer verbal judgements on you as a self rightous cult member. Fair enough?

Well I hope not to offend anyone, but this forum has been founded on the free expression of opinions. Here is mine regarding AI.
It sucked the big one.
I think Steven has lost it and is now just recycling all his old movies. How many movies did he borrow from to make AI? Let me name a few:
1. Close Encounters (thin stringy aliens)
2. Raiders (half eaten faces)
3. ET (search lights at night)
4. Jurassic Park (Motorcycles teeth chasing robots)
5. Tron (motorcycle rider outfits)
6. Saving Private Ryan (pointless suicide)
7. Amistad(robots in cages)
8. Hook (fairy granting wishes)
9. The Color Purple (I want my mommy)
10. 1941 (crashing ferris wheel)
11. Always (2000 years?)
12, Sugarland Express (chased by bad police)
13. Duel (dueling helicopters)
14 Jaws (trapped under water)Then there are the endless staring scenes with the now typical Spielbergesq poor writing that has taken over all his latest movies. How many times did the little dude say mommy? It nearly drove me crazy. What was the point of all the around the table endless eating scenes? Was there one human in this movie that had any redeeming qualities? All seemed to be selfish and cruel. I spent the first half of the movie trying to stay awake and the second half trying to find an excuse for not leaving. I never found it.
Sorry Maximus, I beg to differ……

Where we are not 'winning'
by ISP inwe have won the war........here on the net!
well i think we have so far as reasoned debate is concerned but we are a long way off in other areas.. one thing dubs have, or they perceive they have is a worldwide unity that is unparalleled in the world today.
the unity is at a price in terms of respective individual freedoms as well as commonsense, reason and at times truth.

I find you words to be well spoken as to this issue. I have many former friends who are jw's and they would reply much the same as your friend did. I think the real issue is, do you want to live a lie or live the truth? The difference might be compared to living at home or being on your own. At home you have mom and dad to look out for you, but you also have to accept the loss of freedom that goes along with it. When you are on you own you have the freedom but then the responsibility that goes with it has to be addressed also. Most people who are normal choose to not live with their parents for life and take their chances with the responsibility freedom offers.
To be a teenager and a witness is no easy task, if you live by wt rules. No music, No movies, No dating, No freedom. If you do make a mistake you have the public humiliation heaped on you by everyone you know when you face congregation disipline. If you get df you lose everything and everyone. This cannot be considered a healthy way to live. Guilt, fear, hypocrosy, double life, anger, the feeling you are never good enough, just to name a few. Any witness who has come to accept these things as a way of life has no idea the damage they are doing to their children, themselves and their friends. To help them out is at least giving them a chance to live a normal life.
There are many families with loving parents and well adjusted children who were never jw's, to believe otherwise is to believe wt propaganda. In my opinion living each day with guilt over having not placed enough literature, believing God is going to probably kill you for not being good enough certainly shuold not be considered a healthy mental outlook on life. Just like a moonie or any other cult member, they all smile and think they are happy, they have found the best way of life. Sadly they are to be pitied for having their minds taken over by evil corporations who are simply using them to make money. When they are all used up the cult has no use for them any longer. Many older jw's discover this when they are old, alone, with no support and can do nothing about it.
You speak of trying to win a war, I think of war in a way where you have to kill people to get anywhere. Are we really at war? Do we really have to kill wt to win? Does that not smack of wt theology? I say this to not make anyone feel bad, but isn't the real issue about love for people, education, healing, healthy relationships, and helping people grow from within? Perhaps a better defination would be an outreach, assistance, or education program. We try to help those who want help and for those who do not want help, try to make them understand the reason they need it so badly. It is a worthy cause and one that certainly would have God's blessing. It is simply not a matter of winning people to your way of thinking, but instead teaching them how to think, without someone doing it for them. Then they can make their own decisions about how to live life and please God.
You can never stop the cults, they will go on forever. But if you have a way to help someone out, anyone, it at least is giving them a chance to be free, have choices and not live a lie.

JW's: Animals In The Bedroom.
by Englishman injust wondering......!.
a recent survey suggested that 70% of couples with pets insisted that their pet was removed from the bedroom before they indulged in sexual activity.
the remaining 30% didn't mind in the least if they were observed by rover or tiddles.
