I just found out tonight that apparently I had a small part in breaking one up.
We have a lot of Indian tenants in my building (my wife and I are managers) and last summer, the father of one of the girls in our building was visiting. I was passing him on the sidewalk in front of our building and I casually mentioned about "how he liked his new son-in-law (to be)". He stopped me and seriously asked what I thought of the guy. I said that I honestly didn't know him very well so I couldn't really say but it was just my impression that I thought his daughter could do better.
Well apparently he went and told his wife and told his wife to ask the daughter about how she really felt about the guy and given the opportunity the girl opened up and told them that she wasn't happy with the arrangement and had some doubts about the guy ,etc. one thing led to another and the parents ended up breaking off the arrangement.
From talking with the girl recently, i knew that the arrangement was off but it was only today when the folks were visitng here again from India that the father told me how I had spurred the inquiry.
whoops!

JW Literature-why not public?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower inthis might be old hat to those of you with more experience in the wts/witness life, but it struck me as very odd, perhaps even a bit sinister.
i started coming here so i could find out just what my wife was getting herself into.
on my first day here, i learned about the blood doctrine, and that was enough to convince me.

Misspeaches,
not necessarily. the books could still be offered on a "donation" basis thus technically no sales taxes (presumign they were using their own stores or had a book room at the Kingdom Hall).

My son will be 9 tomorrow and we celebrated his first b-day yesterday!
by findingmyway init was a surprise and he felt a little awkward -- especially when we sang the birthday song -- but he embraced it.
he was so excited to see that everyone came for him and brought gifts and he was very appreciative!
i am so happy that i did it!.

Good for you!If any JWs ask or question, just tell them that you guys are just a little ahead of the curve as you expect that Birthday celebrations will receive official toleration by the Society in the next 10 years.
That might spring into a hypothetical discussion along the lines of you asking them, how they would feel if the Society does tolerate/approve of B-days in the near future. Would what you were doing today be wrong? And if so, then isn't their view of B-days only because the Society is saying that they are wrong today and not because there are objectionable things about B-days itself.
If they have doubts about that, or about the Society making such an "adjustment" feel free to cite them other similar things that have undergone the change in view via the application of the "Rule of Contemporary Association":
I can think of:
"Pinatas" (formerly considered pagan influenced/Christmas influenced - now Ok)
"Wedding Anniversaries/wedding rings",
you or others can come up with others.
take care,
Eduardo Leaton Jr., Esq.

howdy and welcome,
I don't think you are missing anything, just hit upon one of the double-standards and glaring hypocritical fallacies in the Org. If you do have a discussion with your mom over her not associating with you, make sure to point it out to her. Maybe it will get her thinking.
best wishes,

Dear AllAlong:Welcome to the Forum. I am sure you have learned and are learning lots of good info. Regarding why JWs don't have bookstores ala Christian Science or don't distribute their literature through normal channels like independent bookstores, and bookstore chains, the reason is not any of those already suggested.
The reason is due to the fact that from the JW-perspective, IT IS NOT ABOUT THE BOOKS.
JWs are not JUST seeking to give their perspective to the world and are not just seeking to sell or distribute their literature. They desire to make converts ("to bring people into the truth"). This is their articulated mission in life.
Thus they believe (quite erroneously actually) that the best way to achive this aim is through personal door-to-door/public ministry. The literature is a tool used in the ministry - it is not itself the ministry! (Unlike say the Gideons.)
By distributing the literature and studying it with persons, they are able (they believe) to achieve their aim of helping others to come to serve the Lord.
If the literature were just available for the taking with no information about who was taking it or reading it, there could never be any "follow-up" and study of it with the person. JWs wouldn't even know whether the person was "getting it" (i.e. "agreeing with it") or had "questions" about the material.
This is one of the reasons that the literature when "ordered" by mail will be followed, if possible, with a personal visit by a JW and why subscriptions to the Watchtower and Awake! magazines are no longer offered.
By the way, the title of your post is misleading as (most) JW literature is entirely public. Incidently, I wonder, since in order to obtain a U.S. federal copyright, two copies of the work must be furnished to the Library of Congress, whether it is possible for someone to access such "secret" publications as the Flock book ("Paying Attention to Yourselfs and to the Flock") and branch manuals, etc.? Anyone in D.C. know?
