All are great (satiric) ideas! However, they won't go for the one about communicating by e-mail with disfellowshipees. You did see the letter at Kent's site about not putting anything in writing, n'est-ce pas?

Harry Potter is an inspiration to kids who are abused. He gives them hope that with time, persistence, and making an effort to develop one's hidden talents, they can overcome their past and achieve great things.

The Harry Potter books made my socialite / activity-minded granddaughter into a reader. I love him, Hermione, Ron, and all the other little wizards.

Can you be a glutton and inherit god's kingdom?

i was looking for the scripture about who will inherit god's kingdom and can't find it because i packed up all my books and stored them.

is there mention of gluttony being one of the things that will keep you out?

proverbs 23:20 says a drunkard and a glutton will come to proverty.. proverbs 28:7 says one having companionship with a flutton humiliates his father.. so if i can't take blood transfusions, be a drunkard, lie with same sex people, etc.

I don't have an answer to your question on the gluttony issue. However, many people gain weight as a way to "cop out" on life, to avoid social situations or to be "disabled" from doing certain things.

I can see how JW's would gain weight to avoid being invited out socially by others and how they would keep eating to avoid field service, meetings, and other boring JW activities.

DA or not DA or continue slipping away ?

for weeks now, i've been trying to put together a disassociation letter - incidently, it's you lot that have put me up to this - and it's nearing completion but i'm feeling nervous about sending it.

the fast approaching christmas celebration thingymajig is kinda egging me on as i want to blaze christmas lights everywhere and not feel nervous about the possibility of a visit from the po who drops the mags in to me fortnightly (i'm generally 'not in' ... ahem ...).

i would appreciate your for's and against's - to either convince me to go ahead, or to think again and stay the execution ...

I don't understand the issue about when you were baptized, so I cannot comment on that. I have been out since 1979.

Just fading away seems the best option to me, particularly if you care about certain people still on the inside and want to maintain some contact or be able to at least say hello to them from time to time.

EUROPEAN JW VERSUS USA JW

european jw versus usa jw.

this board is very dominant by experience from us about the jw lives.

we are only a few from others parts of the world participate.

Very interesting comments, all. The bottom line (as we say in the USA) is that the WT wants an untarnished image. If the prevailing wisdom in a particular region is toward more freedom the WT will grant it.

Or, as RW (RationalWitness) once so aptly stated it, to the WT, "Image is everything."

"Reproach to Jehovah" = "our image has been tarnished"

Some funny things about Aussies...

3 australians die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.. 142 australians were injured in 1998 by not removing all the pins from new shirts.. 58 australians are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of.

screwdrivers.. 31 australians have died since 1996 by watering their christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.. 19 australians have died in the last 3 years by eating christmas.

I think a cracker is a small toy wrapped up (in Christmas paper, I think) like a tube, with paper sticking out at each end. You pull the cracker apart to make the toy pop out.

Having Been Raised a JW

since i was a raised a jw, it was pretty much forbidden for me to research the history of jws, outside of looking up the society's publication.. however, if i had not been raised a witness and was introduced to the religion, it would have been okay for me to do some research.

there would have been no repurcusions.

what is the wicked and evil truth they were trying to hide from me?

When did the JWs become a religion?

in all my research of the jw phenomenon as a result of my wife's new found epiphany and rapid uptake of the jw rote responses, i've asked myself when the jws really become so religionlike.

i thought i'd see what y'all thought.. my understanding is this: mr. russell was a guy who had the courage to go against the mainstream ideas.

while it sounds like he had a couple vices (ugly young girls, magic elixir sales and idiocy), he actually made some interesting observations.

My JW history is a little sketchy. However, I think Rutherford is the one who created the religion, instituted heirarchy modeled exactly after the Roman Catholic heirarchy, and mobilized the forces to go from door to door to "advertise." The organization became centralized rather than congregational under JFR.

I think most contemporary JW's do consider themselves as part of a religion. I did when I was a JW more than 22 years ago. They like feeling somehow separate or special as compared to other religions, hence their assertion that only they have "the truth."

I wish you well. I know your life must be constant frustration. Be kind to yourself, and remember the saying that goes something like this: "If you love someone, let her go. If she comes back to you, she is yours. If she doesn't, she never was." If you have trouble letting go, I recommend Al-Anon (not just for alcoholism issues, but any issue over which we have no control).

IVE GOT A FUNNY FEELING

i thought that would get your attention.. i dont know if im being perverse here, but i seem to want one last confrontation with the jws.. i am out a good while now.

long enough to stop getting hellos on the street.

what those scumbags did to me before in thier meetings (old h20ers may remember) i still want to go at them again.. i was so depressed about things i really thought about suicide.

I recommend psychological counseling. A good self-help book for someone in your situation is "Your Erroneous Zones" by Dr. Wayne Dyer, in which the feelings of anger, guilt, worry, etc. are addressed in a very sensible way.

I have experienced more anger at former employers than at the WT because I have not experienced some of the tragedies that others have. Time, usually about 2 years, is necessary.

A good, healthy diet and exercise can help. So can soothing music, meditation tapes and talking out your feelings with friends.
