New GB member Judy Jedele critizing Job's "humility" while wearing $20,000 Rolex, gold cuff links, coloured suit. Incredible!
by WingCommander ini swear, you can't make this shit up!
for years and years growing up in this cult, i had to constantly hear from my parents, from the stage, in the literature, about "keeping your eye simple", not being "materialistic", not "having a showy display of one's wealth.
" of course, this never seemed to apply to the wealthy business owning elduhzzzz who ran and lorded it out over the congregations, but i digress.

Wow Vhoven,
How Malefant can make those statements and not see the contradictions is beyond me. Families don't talk to each other because of... 'WT policies of disfellowshipping' is what he should say.

When JW's say they are 'In the truth'...
by Ron.W. inwhere did this phrase 'in the truth' come from?.
it's been around as long as i can remember.
is it from the time they were promoting 'the truth shall make you free' book back in 1943?

I seem to recall that Ray Franz addressed this question in one of his books. I think he said that it came from the Russell-era's interpretation of 'present truth' which was specific wording in a Bible verse from the King James. 'Stand fast in present truth'.

144,000 + 1 kings
by moomanchu ini wonder why so many kings are needed for the millennial reign?
the almighty governing body says 24,000,000,000 people combined from those resurrected and the survivors of the big 'a' could make it into paradise.
that gives you 1 king for every 166,665 persons.

I'm with Blondie on this one. Understanding the WT beliefs means knowing the history of the beliefs, how they have evolved, and what influenced those evolutionary changes. Just looking at the current teachings and how they don't make sense is missing the overall understanding that comes with knowing the history.

Characteristics of a Cult - Heaven's Gate
by dropoffyourkeylee inchacteristics of a cult - by my count, wt ticks 9 of the 12 boxes.
last night i watched a really interesting video (link below) put out by an ex-mormon site discussing the heaven's gate cult.
the person interviewed had a unique perspective in that he had firsthand contact with that group, specifically the house they lived in and the aftermath.

CHACTERISTICS OF A CULT - by my count, WT ticks 9 of the 12 boxes
Last night I watched a really interesting video (link below) put out by an ex-Mormon site discussing the Heaven's Gate Cult. The person interviewed had a unique perspective in that he had firsthand contact with that group, specifically the house they lived in and the aftermath. Steven Hassan is mentioned several times, as well as the JWs at least once. The video is rather long, but well worth viewing for anyone interested in cults and where the JWs may lie on the cult spectrum.

They'll open MS and eventually elder to women. It will take a while, but in my opinion it is inevitable

American Primeval and the Mormons
by Simon injust finished season 1 on netflix.. holy crap, i had no idea of the history of the mormons!.
i always thought they were like the jws, or the quakers, but they were full on fascists committing massacres.. i'm sure they are hating having more people be aware of their past, but i gotta say, it is more event-filled than the jw history..

If it wasn't for Knorr taking the religion to the world
A good observation. Knorr was more of a businessman than a theologian or religious leader. Seems like he thought of the JW religion like it was a multi-national business. It wan't a coincidence that they created Gilead and started sending out missionaries within just a year or two of his taking the presidency of the WT

I think a lot of it has to do with the closing/sale of Kingdom Halls, making people drive an hour or more to meetings. Makes no sense to the average JW, especially where they donated their own hard earned money to build the damn things in the first place.
I don't see going back to private homes, at least in the US, due to liability/zoning/parking/ADA issues.
