A Question About Shunning

much has been said on what it is like to be shunned but i would like to hear from the other side of the practice: what is it like to shun?.

just to give you my perspective: i was raised a jw, but was never baptized and in fact i was only a real zealout for about 2 years of my life.

for this reason when a friend of mine was disciplined for marijuanna possession it never even occured to me that i should shun him (i visited him the day after it was announced at the meeting to cheer him up).

l'm shunned by my parents. Just sent a text to them saying how unloving it was and that i would never shun my kids (well they're adults), but always my kids to me.

They replied, their love is unconditional, yeah right, and its my fault cause i'm not doing what Jehovah wants, then mentioned disfellowshipping. l'm not disfellowhipped! Just faded.

So delusional and narrow minded. No reasoning with them at all. So over it, they might as well be dead to me. Had enough.

Both have major health problems, they're not getting any younger. Maybe they will regret when they need someone to look after them as their health deteriorates more.

Witnesses ordered to begin hoarding supplies

my dad now an ex witnesses was visited last sunday by an active witness who said that during the special talk in the assembly in colchester england they would be advised to begin stockpiling food and water for what could a economic meltdown!.

my dad reminded him about the ancient israelites who relied on jehovah and were provided with mana after their escape from egypt, the point was lost on him!.

have the governing body become a pseudo survivalist regime, and where is their faith!!.

Yes, remember them talking about a 'survival kit', that was over 20 years ago. Everything will be well past its used by date now.

This was my 'Sign'

in my previous post i mentioned that i'm staying in the org because i think i got a sign from god...some of you asked a lot of questions about my sign and even shared the society's view on asking for signs which i didn't know.. i didn't disclose exactly what the sign was.. some of you asked me what it was and even stated that i know that you all would pick apart and prove that my sign was just a frivolous excuse to hold on to the org.. maybe you were right.. so i've decided to tell you all exactly what it was---no embellishments or exaggerations.

i would love to hear your opinions since i'm still in a terrible mess.sometimes i'm 100% this is not the truth then other times i'm 60%....i feel if god was giving me a sign i'd be 100% this is the truth you know?.

so i woke up that morning and organized to go meeting.

This is just my personal opinion, but if you're in 'a mess', have serious doubts, then i believe Gods Holy Spirit is not there.

The last meeting i ever went to was thanks to the speaker, he berated the cong saying we weren't doing enough. That we should be doing more and if we weren't then we shouldn't be here. As i wasn't working i was attending meetings, going out in FS several times a week, raising two kids, but it wasn't enough. Then when i got a part time job i was actually berated for taking it.

I had felt as you did, taking years being in and out. But with that talk i stopped 'hanging' on and made a clean break, best thing i ever did. Also getting my kids out before the religion damaged them also.

I'm at peace now, still not sure where i stand with religion, but fully believe i will find where i'm supposed to be and when i do find it i will know.

Just take you time, use your God given gift of reason, you will eventually work it out.

i can't believe what i am reading.. lie: "the lawsuit alleged that watchtower had a policy that instructed elders in its jehovah's witnesses congregations to keep reports of child sex abusers within the religious group secret to avoid lawsuits.".

Their lack of education shines on through. What a lot of sickening dribble. Wonder when 'new light' will happen with their child protection policies. Hope i didn't sound that stupid when i was a JW. But then i had 'higher education', i managed to complete year 11. Had more education since then. Feel like a 'braniac' compared to some JW's.

What a hard book to get! In Australia anyway. Finally after months of making it my mission, finally got my hands on it.

If anyone in Australia is after a copy, as it seems expensive to post overseas, let me know. I just ask that once your finished with it you pass it on to someone else who needs to read it.

Do Jehovah witnesses exploit the most vulnerable in society?

during my final few years being active with the jws i noticed that the vast majority of people who were studying or joining the group in general where those that the rest of society would consider disabled and/or severely mentally ill. now by disabled i dont mean i lost my leg in nam kind of disabled... in some cases these people were mentally retarded, had the minds of children, were severely abused as children or even as adults and as a result had personality disorders that put them on the edge of society.... and then we had the full on crazies... about 15 years ago one of the brothers who worked at the local welfare office somehow started a study with a person who was a paranoid schizophrenic.

he met her because she was a client of the welfare office.

she got handed off to a sister who studied with her, then started driving her to her doctors appointments, and to get grocerys, and took her to congregation events.

My father a fanatic jw, is mentally ill. His side of the family is mentally I'll, his mother, sister, nieces, cousins. So is my brother. My sister and I have "issues", but not mentally ill. ( Due to abusive up bringing, because of my dads mental illness).

I remember my father saying many years ago, that the jw's are mostly made up of mentally ill people, (that's what attracted him in the first place). He was so proud of that fact.

So was that WT,articles about mentally ill people coming into the "truth", frequently. Eventually the WT realized that maybe it wasn't something to boast about, as they were more or less confessing to a religion chock full of the mentally ill. (Not a good look). So they stopped putting these embarrassing articles in the WT.

been off the board for about 6 days or so battling a nasty bout of vertigo that hit me early this week.

at least my heads not spinning so i can think straight now to type a thread.

in this article titled, " maintain a complete heart towards jehovah " ( which should be called ' maintain a complete heart towards the wt society ) - wt society uses a lame illustration of a field laborer desiring family - yet missapplies this to jw's desiring " things of satan's world".. on page 15 it states, " a field laborer is busy plowing.

Obviously the "having no part of the world", doesn't apply to the WT. Just the R & F. Like being affiliated with the UN, for years. Then major embarrassment when sprung. The excuse, "we did it because the library card was useful".

Funny how R&F don't seem to see the hypocrisy.

one thing that i have always noticed even when i was a jw is that the jw org has lots and lots and lots of rules for allsorts of stupid petty rules which make no difference.

when you read the bible you see how they are clearly in the wrong here and are acting like the pharisees themselves, who imposed so much pressure on others to conform to the law.

am i missing something here!?!?

So no rule requiring parents to shun their children. If so why am I being shunned by my parents? I'm NOT disfellowshipped, nor have I sinned against god. Just decided the religion wasn't for me. Never spoke against the religion, I actually used to defend it.

There was an article stating NOT to have transplants, it was likened to cannibalism. New Light on that subject since.

Vaccinations was evil, do NOT get your child vaccinated. New Light on that subject too.

What do you mean no rules on blood transfusions. Errr... That's what the religion is known for. Why the blood cards we all HAD to have, baptized or not? As I am medically trained blood transfusions and blood fractions are the exact same thing. No wonder they want their members uneducated.

Many years ago there was a wt article and talk about beards. Beards were banned, everyone who had one had to shave them off immediately. Some brothers who did have beards did complain, but like good little foot soldiers obeyed. No beards is a rule, not a choice.

There was a talk about a sister who had the audacity to wear a pants suit to a meeting,she was publicly reproved. The only time ever I saw a sister wear pants to a meeting in 26 years. She suffered public humiliation in the cong for daring to wear pants.

I remember having to sit through another talk, stating married couples, those dating are NOT to hold hands during prayer at the meetings. Apparently it was stumbling others. So yes another man made rule.

I feel sick just remembering this bullshit.

A talk that was given finally "stumbled" me, never went back after that meeting. He said that none of us are good enough, not doing enough, really why are we here at the meeting if we are not devoting every inch of ours lives to the ORGANISATION. No mention of devotion to Jehovah. Yes in that moment I did think, what the hell am I doing here? And that was before the talk had even finished. It was like I had my eyes open for the first time. That was the last meeting I ever attended. Wonder how many others have left over a talk that "stumbles" them?

How often do the WT say "Is it later than you think?" in their publications?

there will be special talk this year titled "is it later than you think?

" see the front cover of october 8 1968 awake as shown below and i am wondering how often they say that phrase over the years.

i do not have the wt cd-rom.

I remember years ago when I was a kid, a wt magazine came out with a clock on the front. It showed 1 minute to midnight. Titled "Is it closer than you think?" Then not long down the track another wt magazine came out, yep with a clock on it, difference this time, it was 5 minutes to midnight. Yep the title was "Is it later than you think?"

I grew up being told I wouldn't finish primary school, (finished). I wouldn't finish high school, (finished). I would have children in this system (I did). My children wouldn't grow up in this system, (they did, now 17y & 20y).

Pre-emptive shunning - a growing reality

i'm scanning through some of the results from the 2012 jw survey as they're coming in.. the most populous of the six voting categories with 76 voters so far is my own category, for those who are inactive, or "faded/fading" (not disfellowshipped or da'd, but no longer reporting time on the ministry).. one statistic already leaping out at me surrounds the question "do you experience 'pre-emptive shunning' from active witnesses, who view you as 'bad association'?

" of the 74 who voted on this so far, 76% have answered "yes" to this question.. it's early days, and obviously i will have a clearer picture of the extent of the problem once the survey closes at the end of the year.

however, the results already in suggest that pre-emptive shunning is widespread among inactive ones, despite this not being an "official" policy of the society.. i was interested in your opinions as to why this may be?
