the book is about basicly how to protect yourself online with identity fraud.

this chapter had quoted good old theocratic warfare in how to not give people your ssn or any other information.

Guarding or protecting confidential information isn't wrong, and it isn't considered lying to do so.

I've had people come to my door offering a "free" water heater, if I will show them our bill for natural gas to "prove" that I am actually renting the water heater from the company I claim to be renting from. I know this is a ruse to acquire information from the bill so they can fill out paperwork that I have not authorized to send to the company I do business with to terminate their services and initiate services from the company that sent its toadie to my door. That person/company is not entitled to that information, and I feel no inclination to share confidential information with someone who is trying to scam me.

People phone our home occasionally claiming they want to confirm personal information for "credit card applications" - which we have not submitted, so I know they are bogus - they get told to shove off too. They can get very obnoxious about it too, saying that I could be at risk for identity theft if I don't cooperate, so I ask them to spell their names and give me their employee numbers so I can call that particular bank back on their 1-800 number to confirm that the call is genuine - and surprise, surprise, they hang up so fast it makes me LMAO.

I plan at some future point in time to let these callers know that we have not submitted credit card applications because we have sold all of our possessions and are planning to move to a commune... by the way, Dave, have you noticed the state of the world today? and can I offer you a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn the secrets of the Bible?

Likewise, in my job I am under obligation to patients to maintain their confidentiality. People can ask me about patients' conditions but I am not authorized to disclose that information.

What bugs me are people who get their noses out of joint because they think they are entitled to information to which they have no such entitlement. I include JW Elders™ in that group. They haven't bothered to darken my door in years to express concern over our absenteeism from the KH, and yet when they hear a rumour about us, they rush on over to find out whether what they've heard is true or not. I have no desire to validate their stupid little Napoleon complex, nor do I recognize any claims of authority they make, therefore, I consider them to be outside the realm of those entitled to private personal information.

Hilarious "wardrobe worksheet" in new YPA book!

during a quiet moment i picked the latest ypa book down from my bookshelf.

it's pretty much stayed there since my relatives came back from the latest convention.

i couldn't bring myself to see the extent to which the society is now trying to claw its way into the lives of teenagers.

She is working for your father. Your never-JW father needs to have a word with her about how she treats his daughter, because it could potentially Stumble™ him.

Frankly, if she was working for my father and treated me that way, I'd be helping him find another housekeeper. Tell her the WTS doesn't care about the Standing™ of anyone who sends them money. For Pete's sake, they accept money from a trust fund that held stocks in a tobacco company (Philip Morris), and held stock in a weapons company (Rand-Cam), so she should be grateful for the employment and shut her damn mouth.

Jobs and Pointy Headed Bosses

i often wondered what the exact flaw in human society is that propels those with a talent for bare-knuckled, marquess of queensberry be damned office politics over those whose talents lie with the actual "nuts and bolts" of a project.. but i know it's a phenomenon that almost every single person in a technical field has experienced at one time or another.. when i've had the misfortune of working for an executive who really, truly doesn't understand the field well enough to set reasonable goals, i've tried to be philosophical about it.. when the executive ruthlessly drove the employees to go faster and faster and faster and then screamed obscenites when minor mistakes occurred, i've told myself that although it's unpleasent, it makes you stronger.

when the executive fired people who burned out after a couple of years of this, i felt bad, but took it as a lesson.. when the executive fired people when he felt that their creative talent had simply been exhausted, i felt even worse and was just glad it didn't happen to me.. when the executive fired people who simply didn't have a brilliant idea to present him that day, i told myself that they should have known better than to ride with the boss.. maybe human beings need ruthless, egomaniacal ceo's like this.

maybe most human accomplishments worthy of note had such a person behind them.

I work for an institution that has as part of its mission the goal of becoming a "magnet" hospital, one that attracts talented individuals to want to work there.

There have been a lot of changes over the years, in terms of how professionals practice (MDs, RNs and other disciplines) but while our licensing boards stress autonomy and personal responsibility in our practice, the behaviours that are promoted under the terms of creating "magnet" status involve a lot of what I feel is "dumbing down", conformity and following policy and procedure (rather than taking initiative, or looking for creative solutions to problems) and basically keeping your mouth shut when you notice a problem if you don't want to have a target painted on your forehead.

I've heard of team-building "retreats" that must cost an enormous amount of money, where the people who attend are paid to attend, get free meals included in their day, and where ego-stroking is the order of the day. At the same time, units have to run short staffed because the managers will not approve overtime to cover a sick call.

Honestly, I don't get it. I want my hospital to be a place where patients want to come to be cared for because we have a reputation for excellent patient care, not because we got a silly rating for having kumbaya days for the managers and administrative staff.

... to continue his case.. for those following it for the last almost 10 years, it is still going and now it looks like the wt is out of tricks and stunts.

he is going to win on all counts.. he has won major decisions recently.

the last trick the bastards at the watchtower are trying is to prove he is financially incapable of sustaining the suit.

Lawrence Hughes has been advised on how to set up a bona fide trust fund to cover his legal expenses. He has had offers for assistance to raise funds, provided he does the legwork for setting up the appropriate and legally acceptable trust funds, including having an independent board of directors to oversee revenue management, and provide receipts to donors.

He has ignored this advice to his own financial peril, and instead has come here on numerous occasions, with his hat in his hand begging for hand-outs with emotionally triggering pleas. I understand his desire for vindication, and for some kind of legal recognition for the JW related circumstances involved in Bethany's loss, but ignoring the advice of people who want to see him succeed without having to stoop to the same level of guilt mongering that the WTS uses is unacceptable.

i really enjoyed his insightful comments and scholarly knowledge.

he and leolaia could always contribute to those difficult biblical questions that really required a knowledge of the languages and history of biblical times.

Don't you think it's 'parenting by numbers' though? Surely kids and parents can work out clothing issues without requiring an actual worksheet, including questions such as "Is it too trendy?" I just feel it's all going a bit too far, and as has already been commented, it smacks of "micro-managing" on the part of the Society - along similar lines to the "what to wear at bethel" pamphlet.

Well that's a good question re: 'parenting by numbers'. From my own perspective, having worked with families and their new babies for a long time, what I see is that parents actually want some kind of framework for raising their children. I get asked questions ALL the time about the "proper" way [down to the minute details] to bathe a baby, dress the baby, feed the baby, get the baby to go to sleep, how much to feed, what to feed, how to breastfeed, when to go to the doctor. Mostly things that I take for granted as an experienced parent, but things that I learned from observing other parents (including my own) and then put into application when I was a new mother to each of my children. In things like child rearing, a novice parent will seek out the guidance of experienced parents or other authority figures - that's perfectly normal. It isn't normal, and is sometimes a cause for concern, when a new parent doesn't want any guidance or information about child care - someone who claims they've read every book out there, but has never even held an infant before, and resent any 'interference' from us to show them how everyday activities are done.

A lot of us - and I include myself in this - sometimes have an automatic knee-jerk reaction to anything the WTS publishes and refuse to see any potential benefits the information might have. I think this "wardrobe worksheet" is a good example of that. But if you search online, it's pretty much in line with what the general consensus is in terms of negotiating with parents over wardrobe choices. With JWs - even the teenagers - their authority figure of choice is the WTS. They respect what's being taught to them and feel that it's the proper way to do things. So while we laugh at this "wardrobe worksheet" and think it's over the top in terms of micro-management, it's really a decent tool to teach parents and teenagers to come to some middle ground. Don't forget that things have changed from the red Your Youth book that I grew up with in the 70s, to the blue YPA book from the 90s, and now to the current one. There was no real way for teenagers to learn the art of negotiating with their parents when I was growing up - you were expected to do as you were told, even if you didn't like it. Parenting styles have evolved in that time too, and the tool reflects the current thinking of allowing children to have a voice in their personal appearance.

Do I think that there are some people who will use this "wardrobe worksheet" to the extreme of "micro management"? Of course there will be some who do take it super seriously, both parents and kids. I think though, that the average JW teenager will begin to learn the very useful skill of negotiation, which can be applied well beyond their wardrobe and their own parents.

What concerns me about articles like this, though, is that they have the deceptive appearance of presenting the WTS as very middle-ground and mainstream. When a Worldly™ teenager brings a book like this home and the parents see it, there aren't going to be red flags going up with worry that the child is becoming involved with a cult. I think that is the kind of thing that we need to focus on and expose, to prevent young people from becoming ensnared by the WTS.

Getting rid of HUGE JW library

my husband, alanf, started collecting jw literature about 20 years ago when he began his indepth research into the religion.

his collection includes just about everything the society has ever published, from books and magazines down to booklets, pamphlets, and handbills.

some pieces are quite rare.

I never thought I'd see the day when alanf would part with his JW library.

I bet the WTS would pay a king's ransom to get some of that stuff out of circulation. LOL
