1. homicide--proximate cause--victim's refusal to accept blood transfusion--not intervening cause of death.

Prior to surgery, Dr. Stanton discussed the nature and extent of the injuries with Lemmons and informed her that without a blood transfusion or the re-transfusion of her own blood, she would not likely survive. Nevertheless, Lemmons refused, citing her religious convictions as a Jehovah's Witness as the basis for her refusal.

yet we see, further in the report, the defendant's statement....

I have been living with Marina Lemmons for about nine months. We have been having problems off and on. Tonight I arrived home around 5:00 p.m. . . . Marina was in bed. I left and went up the street and smoked a cigarette. I returned and Marina was in the bath tub. I went into the bathroom and washed my ring finger on my left hand that I cut earlier. Marina was telling me she did not have time for any fake nigger. She was telling me this over and over. I went downstairs in the living room. Marina later came down and started talking on the phone. Marina was talking with some guy in front of me and this made me mad. After talking on the phone, she went back upstairs. After a few minutes I followed. I asked her how comeyou call other guys and go see other guys after we just broke up.

Interesting her "choice" of religious convictions when her religion forbids sexual activity outside of marriage as well as blood transfusions....

I wonder if she was DF'd or DA'd herself due to the apparent immorality she was involved in? Did the JWs give her a proper funeral because she refused a transfusion?

I'm curious about this now....

Suborning Perjury

i am a little skeptical (but not very!

society's lawyers/representatives coaching people to lie in.

Howdy Metatron:

My mother was asked to serve as a character witness in a child custody case for an unbaptized, JW raised "prodigal daughter" in her congregation.

We discussed at length the 'coaching' that took place over the course of two weeks with the assistance of the WTS's lawyers. The concept of "Theocratic War Strategy" was being used to full advantage.

ive seen posts here and there in the past months on this board that talk about ex-dub activism but i hate to admit this but most of the activities mentioned are rather ineffective in really doing anything but making us ex-dubs feel collectively better.. we have discussed protesting at conventions, making a protest walk, peeing on c.t.

russells grave, playing some games at local kingdom halls, and playing mind games with dubs online.

i really dont have anything against these forms of activism but i dont think they accomplish much.. what i therefore dare suggest and beg for your comments are new ideas of how we can redirect our anger more effectively and support actions and causes that sting the borg like hell and also help others out the door.. i have nothing but praise for the actions of people who take a stand like silent lambs, or others who have setup informative ex-dub websites and i think one good thing we could do is support these efforts by doing some fund raising.. i also would love to stick something right up the ass of the gb but im trying to think of just how to do it.

I think one of the BEST things exJWs can do is to educate people, in particular judges and lawyers especially, about the JW concept of "Theocratic War Strategy".

Once people are aware of the WTS's mandate that requires members to lie in order to protect the Organization, their testimony in court will become suspect on ALL COUNTS. If you can't trust someone to tell the truth on a witness stand in court when they've sworn to do so, then their cases will be thrown out of court.

We need to be able to use the legal system against them, the same way they used the legal system to wangle "rights" for themselves in the past. It will bring them to their knees eventually.

the button is on the front page of the website.

it is odd that the letter seem to follow a similar pattern to the testimony in the paul berry sentencing hearing.

This happened in my parents' congregation as well. My mother was told she would be called as a character witness for the young woman (prodigal JW daughter) she had been conducting a study with. The WTS lawyers came in and coached her plus 3 other JW 'witnesses' as to what to say to all kinds of questions that might be asked.

They were instructed to deny that JWs believe that the world is under the control of the Devil.

They were instructed to deny that JW children are not permitted to participate in school celebrations of holidays or birthdays, and are strongly discouraged to participate in extracurricular activities.

The lawyers spent 2 weeks, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm, preparing these 4 people. Two of them were pioneers, and were allowed to count their time; my mom and her friend were not allowed to do so.

The lawyers relied heavily on the use of "Theocratic War Strategy". I wonder how many judges and lawyers know about Theocratic War Strategy.....

What was the JW breaking point 4 U?

we have a thread that asks why we became jw's, so i became curious as to why some of us have left.

Mine was the treatment of my wife. She was controlled her whole life by her parents and the congregation, and when she finally said no, they either shunned, gossiped about or abandoned her.

Sounds like your wife and I have a lot in common. When I started learning how to say "No" to them and look after my own needs, I was labelled as 'selfish', 'unchristian', 'full of herself', etc etc. This was in spite of the fact that I was diagnosed with postpartum depression, and had suicidal thoughts. The JWs thought I was demonized and the people who were supposed to be my friends and the ones who cared about me more than anyone else treated me like crap.

At one point, after about a year and a half of trying to cope with my illness, in addition to all the garbage the JWs were dumping on our family, I confided in a friend that with the way we were being treated, I was seriously considering leaving the JWs because I felt there was no love there as Jesus had said would be evidenced by his disciples. Her reply was "If you turn your back on The Truth™, you may as well take your three beautiful children out in the back yard and blow off their heads with a gun. That way they won't go down with you at Armageddon and they'll have a resurrection in the Paradise." That was the last straw. I got up and walked out the door of the restaurant, and never spoke to her again. I've never set foot in a Kingdom Hall since then either.

No regrets.

If you have any dramamine or benadryl handy that will probably make you sleepy. Neither is addictive, but if you're finding that your insomnia lasts more than a couple of nights, you should probably get it checked out.

My sleep cycles regularly get messed up because of my working night shifts. I noticed an improvement in my ability to recuperate once I stopped having caffeine products, and instead substituted herbal teas (there's one that is a mild sedative that's marketed under the name "sleepytime"), water (sometimes with a small wedge of lemon for flavour), chicken broth and so on.

There are lots of good relaxation tapes on the market, as well as the "Solitudes" series of CDs and tapes. I have a collection of nature sounds CD (babbling brooks, rainfall, birds in the forest, thunderstorms, whale and dolphin sounds, etc.) that are very relaxing for me.

My favorite relaxation technique is to fill up the tub with hot water and bubbles, have a dozen or so lavendar scented candles flickering on the vanity (the mirror reflects the candle light, so you don't need a lot) and then turn the lights off, turn some soothing music on and just let the hot water melt away all my stress and anxieties. After a good soak in the tub, a back rub and/or foot massage with lightly scented lotion is the icing on the cake. I sleep like a baby afterward.

Although having an alcoholic drink may be tempting for its sedative effects, it is known to disrupt sleep cycles and shorten the REM cycles that your body needs for its restorative effects. It's also very dehydrating, so you tend to wake up with a headache or worse.

If you're under a lot of stress that's keeping you awake, try writing down your thoughts and worries in a journal. It's amazing how getting the words out of your mind and onto paper helps you to put the stress aside enough to allow you to get some sleep.

Grandfather died

and now there is a debate between my father and his sister whether there should be a memorial service at the kingdom hall.. is there a rule whereby an elder who gives a memorial service at a kingdom hall must use the society's outline?

because my father and my grandmother have made it quite clear that he under no circumstances do they want that.

(i'm very blessed to have jw family who do not shun me even with the long hair (yes it is growing back), earring, and, oh yeah, disfellowshipment).

sorry to hear about your Grandfather, Cygnus.

The best approach regarding the elder is probably to ask him if he would be willing to give a talk without using the WTS's outline, but rather on the basis of the friendships your Grandfather had, family, and some of his personal accomplishments.

If it's not important to the family to have the Memorial Service held at the Kingdom Hall, most funeral homes would be willing to hold the service. They offer a kind of neutral territory, and a JW speaker may not feel as strongly about sticking to the WTS outline once they are outside the Kingdom Hall.

Would This Be Assault?

ok, let's construct a hypothetical situation.. this year i will not be attending the memorial.

up till now, the elders have left me alone, but not attending the memorial may well trigger a reaction.

one saturday afternoon the door bell goes.

You can always tell them that you've relocated your "library" to the shed out in the back yard. Once they've expressed interest in viewing it, lead them to the front door (who wants to trudge through the Canadian snow in your back yard, when you've got a pathway that leads there from the front?), help them on with their jackets and hold the door open. Once they're out, say "thanks for dropping by!"* and slam the door shut on them. If they don't leave post haste, then call the police on them, and say there are two adult males on the property who seem overly interested in your back yard tool shed. Wave "bye-bye" to them as they are escorted to the police cruiser.

*or alternatively, you might try my brother's favourite: "Thanks for the hostility, it's been a pressure!"
