Trixie Beldon was another girl teen detective who solved mysteries with her friends. I have to admit one draw it had for me was that it had a character named Diana. I went thru a phase of trying to get everyone to call me "Di" like the girl in the book.

Does Debating Have to Be Abusive - To Be Effective ?
by flipper inmy wife and i were having an interesting discussion about some of the debates that take place on the board here .
now, granted most people , i feel upwards of 90 % on the board maybe higher try to be respectful in their debates or discussions on topics.
i think we all had enough bashing in the witness organization.

Coming in late on this one.
I don't think debating has to be abusive to be effective. IMO once it reaches that point it's no longer debating it two people bashing each other over the head with their entrenched viewponts. Course I'm not gonna lie, I'm as guilty as the next person of being drawn into that kind of pissing match. All it did was make me feel bad, certainly didn't change my opinion or open my mind to any new ideas which for me is what debating is all about.
Couple of things I've learned thru the years on discussion boards. State your views, be willing and able to back them up with facts, keep an open mind yourself to others viewpoints and show them the same respect you would like to get, be ready to walk away when you realize it's futile to continue the discussion. Oh and it's ok to say "Dang I was wrong".
I generally tend to ignore people who talk trash to and/or about me. People who know me know the person I am. People who don't know me will either take the time to get to know me or think the worst of me based on something they read online, guess which person I care about. That said I do at times feel the need to confront people that I feel are abusing myself or others, everyone needs some type of accountablity and I pick my battles.

Arguing With a Believer Is Like Playing Chess
by What-A-Coincidence innice metaphor for religion and how impossibly difficult it is to influence the actions or beliefs of some people with deep seated faith.

IMO it's that way when enter into a discussion with anyone who has a closed mind and firmly held beliefs. Nothing you say is going to change their minds. It's why I rarely bother anymore.

this could make you laugh or be really angry !
by looloo ini recently bumped into a jw i know that told me that her watch had been pinched at an assembly , she then went on to tell me that a lot of worldly people go to assemblys ,so she should have been more carfull !!!!!!!
this is someone that knows im "worldly" i was gobsmacked when i had recovered from my shock i informed her that i would not dream of stealing something despite being "worldly".
i dont even think she realised how offensive it sounded and she is not usually a judgemental person , so it must be all that self righteous association she has been mixing with lol

It's sad they are so indoctrinated and cut off from reality that they really do believe the only good and moral people are JWs. I had a friend once who was d/fed but wanted to bring her kids up as JWs because she wanted them to have morals. I told her you do realize there are MILLIONS of people that aren't JWs and the majority of them are good and decent people. Course she didn't listen to me, let her kids be raised JWs and now they shun her. So much for morals, eh?

You Who Have Been on the Board For Awhile - What Are your Concerns ?
by flipper inwell, it's late.
i need to go to sleep, got home from work, but i thought i started a newbie thread why not a thread for those who have been on the board a long time , or for awhile now ?
so, lay it on me, what are your concerns for jwd ?

XENA- You have your opinion about HS and his takes. I respectfully disagree with you and him. We need to be civil to newbies and others and make them feel welcome ! I don't mean love bombing ; just be normally friendly and welcoming !
lol obviously I have my opinion about HS and his takes, I posted it. As for your not agreeing with me, I didn't expect you to, again, obviously.
Being nice to newcomers is something I advocate as well, I'm just not naive enough to expect it consistantly. Everyone who posts on here is coming from a different place and when they post unless we know them well we have no idea what drives their words so to expect uniform behavior is unrealistic. Maybe in the new system though you will get your wish.
Cheers!
HS
It's freakishly cold, wet and windy here, but amazingly beautiful so I guess you take the good with the bad. I'll send your regards to Ross when I take his tea down to the basement where I keep him chained up. Kinky Brit.

Ian (Dansk) in hospital with CMV
by Alleymom inhi, everyone ---.
claire asked me to let the board know that ian is back in the hospital and expected to be there for about a week.. those of you who have been following the weekly vigil thread know that his cmv has returned.
the virus is not responding adequately to the tablets, so ian needs to be medicated intravenously.. please keep ian and claire in your prayers.. marjorie.

LMAO watching this thread turn into an object lesson on what HS was posting about.
I've been on this board a long time...probably to long if you ask some people ....and HS is spot on with his comments. Newbys generally lurk and know pretty much what they are getting into here when they start posting, we left the dubs and are past love bombing for the most part, and given the mix of leaving an oppressive religion, some emotional and mental instability and the pure bliss of finally being able to speak our minds freely ya gotta expect some fireworks.
