Did you fall for the "hype"?
by seahart inanyone here fall for the (what should have been straight to video) hype of snakes on a plane.
i am proud to say i saw right through it.the studios are getting wise on how to use the internet to do the dirty work for them.
they must have saved a ton and maybe even made a little.

Celebrating holidays
by dobbie injust wondering if you still abstain from celebrating christmas birthdays etc or if you do celebrate them how long did it take to feel comfy with doing it after you'd left the jws?i'm fading at the moment but although me and hubby have talked about spending xmas with our nonjw families and i told him i was going to start sending bday cards to my family, the thought of it scares me like its a big huge sin.does it ever feel natural to celebrate holidays?i used to love all that sort of thing before i was a witness but when my mum and stepdad wished me happy bday last month it felt really odd and i was uneasy.i find it v confusing cos i can sort of see that jesus wasn't born in dec. but maybe he can have 2 bdays like the queen!also not being able to send fathers day cards this year was the final straw for me i felt so bad about it so i have lots of making up to do but just hope i can enjoy it all without feeling bad.
i know they say some bday things have pagan origins but there are things jws can have or do that also are pagan.wedding rings for example.thanks

birthdays do not bother me at all as there seems to even be scriptural precedent for it in the book of Job. i am still uncomfortable with others like xmas, definitely halloween, easter (astarte???) etc.

hey blondie -- don't you think you had a "bad attitude"?? lol if there were campaigns before 1975 then i definitely took part. can't remember specifics. what i do remember is doing rooming work all over the 5 boroughs of nyc asking if they would take strangers in for $2 a night.

Remember when KH's had a piano and real singing?
by WingCommander inthe thread about got me thinking about my very early childhood, back when witnesses were allowed to be social and have get togethers.
they also had a piano in every congregation i ever attended, and an older sister would always play the kingdom melody.
there was actual singing - not mindless droning and humming.

well i used to play the organ at kh. and i was NOT a little old sister at the time. just the daughter of an elder who had aspirations for my talent. hah. i played at every meeting for at least 5-7 yrs. one sunday in the 70's (after my father had fallen from favor) it was announced that the congregation would sing song # whatever. i was surprised since it had always been decided ahead of time which song would be sung. so there i was walking to the organ to play when the recorded music came on -- i was totally bewildered and walked back to my seat. that's how it was from then on. always vinyl music. but no one ever spoke to me about the change. no one had the courtesy to inform me. it just happened. and my music days at kh were over just like that.

The facts on crucifixion, stauros, and the "torture stake"
by Leolaia infinally, i will look at biblical and patristic evidence bearing on the crucifixion of jesus in particular.
we need to examine the earliest known descriptions of the kind of crucifixion adopted by the romans and the specific terms they used to refer to it.
apparently the society believes that crux still meant "stake" in the second century a.d., when tacitus composed his annals.
