Today there was an "involvement fair" at the college where I work. All student organizations were represented as well as probably 15 to 20 religious organizations. All the religious organization's tables had kids around getting information except (wait for it!) the poor, lonely, JW, who was obsessively straightening his Awake!s and avoiding eye contact. I felt so sorry for him I almost wandered over to talk, but decided I wasn't *that* compassionate! Is there any successful witnessing strategy? Or is it all pretty much just putting in the time? Now that I think of it, recruiting at an institution of higher learning? Hmmmmm.

I spoke my mind!
by basics-for-me inhaven't been here for a while now...well had a look on a couple of occasions but that's it.. just wanted to share an experience that happened earlier on this evening.. the elder and wife that "brought us in" came around to dump their shit on us..namely the wt/a.
after a brief exchange on life's trivialities,(as they do)!
i siezed my opportunity to give them some shit back.

Yay! clapclapclapclap! Here's hoping there's something in them that heard you and they'll be better. But whatever, you don't have to see them ever again. Yay!

I've heard all about you!
by SM62 ini have heard about this forum from someone, but i won't say who as i don't want to expose them.
i am in the process of evaluating my life as a jw.
it has been a pretty sad life - without a real feeling of 'belonging'.

"I am not very bright!" Now cut that out. You can certainly be made to feel that you are lacking in intelligence when you're constantly being told that what is true isn't and vice versa. And I swear, the writers for the Watchtower publications work hard to make it very easy to misunderstand or be confused by their writing. I believe they want you to think you aren't very bright so you won't question them. Well, here you are, questioning away, so it isn't working any more! So, just let me say I'll be you're bright enough and welcome to the discussion!

Did you just luck into that psychiatrist or was he recommended? He sounds perfect! Hopefully, this is the beginning of a smooth road out of the borg and into your new lives free of depression, anxiety and delusions!

Winston, this is gut-wrenching. Wish I could help--but I am holding you and your wife in my heart.

Strange days at my old hall. please read
by josephus ini havent said too much here recently, mainly due to a severe lack of anything to say !, however, tonight my old hall has had a special meeting with a talk by the head of the ireland branch.
he is visiting for a week and afterwords all present will be having snacks and drinks, in the hall.. please tell me what is happening with the world when special saterday night meetings are held with refreshments.
i think its because about 10 people have left recently and made no secret of their reasons, but still, its unheard of for this to happen.. any thoughts.

This must vary from congregation to congregation. My JW friend has bible study in the hall and once a month they have a post-study pot luck supper. I am finding it very difficult to understand why the discouragement of social gatherings of witnesses and of the implicit discouragement of helping each other out on a regular basis (because of the pressure for "countable" time). I think reversing those two policies (for example, dividing the required FS into have door-to-door and half visiting elderly and/or sick witnesses and helping out members of the congregation in need) would stop the outflow. If there were a strong social support, people wouldn't have much difficulty ignoring any doubts over doctrinal issues. So I guess I'm glad they don't make those changes, but I can't figure out how they got themselves into this mess in the first place! Why isolate Witnesses from each other, for heaven's sake? Especially since they are supposed to isolate themselves from non-Witnesses? I do not understand this.

Hamas--good for you for posting that! It really is helpful to see where you started from. Did the change in your perspective come mostly from participating here or were there other major factors?

JW's 'acting badly'.
by Steve Lowry inthe worst experience i think i ever had with jws acting badly was one time when a good friend of mine (a former jw like myself) tom, had a jw cousin in the hospital due to a very bad car accident.
his cousin (a woman in her late thirties) had suffered severe head trauma and it was not known at that time if she would recover.
practically all of toms immediate and extended family was jws.

I got scammed!!!!!!!!! But it's okay now.
by Mulan ini debated about posting this, because it's embarrassing but i decided to do it just in case anyone else falls for this one.. i have 3 websites where i market nutritional supplements, and i get thousands of dollars in orders each month.
at the end of july, i got a very large order ($10,500) for one of the products.
i filled the order using the credit card numbers provided by the customer.

Wow--the fact that those fraudulent numbers all cleared is the scariest part! Why bother have an authentification system?

Sad again at the Service Meeting
by Euphemism inthe service meeting on thursday was really saddening, particularly the last part, about preaching with boldness.
it was about overcoming nervousness, shyness, etc in the ministry.. all these people gave their experiences about difficulties they had in the ministry.
a regular pioneer (and elder's wife) admitted that she used to just pretend to ring the door bells; service is still really difficult for her, but she does it just because she feels obligated to.

Were these people/stories being used as good examples? They do it in spite of the personal pain? It is upsetting.
