Under communist rule, everyone was required to work, so all JWs in Czechoslovakia were employed. Many looked for job that would allow them to study or do field service while being employed. Many brothers were employed in coal mines where they could avoid military service and worked hard. However, there were many brothers who never worked hard, and their hands were like catholic priests, all soft, kept, and manicured. This was much different from the coal mine area I lived. After the fall of communism, welfare became possible, and many JWs went to welfare. I knew cases where JWs abused the welfare so much that they had issues with the law. One wife of the elder claimed that they have no income, lived free in city apartment until social services had find out that both had income under the table. They were evicted, etc. My JW cousin claimed disability since age 28, he is very healthy, elder, and getting welfare payments including supplimental income for his children for the past 20 years. JWs are one of the biggest welfare queens I ever had met.

I know that Prague branch property is still on sale. It was probably delayed as the economy took dive in 2008 and with it real estate. The property market is up, so they may again try to resell the branch office. WT had several properties around Prague and Central Bohemia. I will ask my JW relatives if they know how much they were sold.

This Weekends SAD Not So Special
by piztjw inso after being at this weekend's snooze fest i thought the following pretty well summed it all up:.
if it feels good, looks good, sounds good, tastes good, smells good, or is even moderately enjoyable it is from satan!
and if you feel it, look at it, listen to it, taste it, smell it, or even remotely enjoy it you are going to die at armagedon.. if you are too busy, too stressed, or barely able to make financial ends meet, you must pray more, study more, go out door knocking more, and give more money to the organization.. if you are a brother and you have been snubbed, slighted, ignored, bullied, and otherwise passed over for any "advancement" in spite of "reaching out", it is your fault!

In Czech Republic JW are often on welfare, recieve benefits paid by taxpayers which includes suplimental income. Czech Republic has generally well established welfare and universal healthcare system (but it is not single payer, but several insurance companies), and social nest. I also knew JW who were getting food deliveries from Catholic charity because they did not work and had no income, but enough time to go into field service. I never heard that pioneer could not be on unemployment. I knew JWs from various congregation around CZ and they were doing exactly the same, work a bit, get laid off, work on field service, get rehired.. repeat.

My mother is losing her old personality
by Faithful Witness ini have been trying to engage and talk to my mother and her "natural" personality as much as possible.
she has obvious concerns about the jw's, and we do discuss issues almost every time she visits.
we didn't see her for long stretches (months at at time, and suddenly a year had gone by...) we have now both committed to a minimum of a monthly visit, and we will work toward more.

Did you consider the effect of aging? I trying to talk to my parents every week as I live in USA and they live in Europe. Around 75 birthday, my mom changed a bit like becoming more lethargic. She used to be full of energy; but sometimes she will not reply to me, nor she seems much interested about anyone around her. She seems to be more concerned about people of the past who are dead since WWII, but she barely mention grandchildren. At certain age, usually after 70 people develop strange behavior that could be sign of other diseases related to aging.

i have primary custody of the girls.
i take them biking, to the park, hiking, and fir strolls in the neighborhood.

I know some ex-JWs who went to wild run to taste all the forbidden fruit that was denied in the past: partying, multiple sex partners, expensive vacations, tattoos, smoking, etc. Others just did very fine and work on life goals like getting decent education, settle down with stable job, house with picket fence, pet, family, and hobbies. This was my path. I have never smoked in my life, and I am not much interested in partying, etc. Others go for faith shopping and changing churches, etc to achieve some kind of spiritual nirvana.

JW were persecuted in totalitarian regimes, and they were known at least under communism. Some areas had huge membership of JW especially in the minging districts. Eastern Slovakia was known to have villages were majority were JW. This was 25-35 years ago. After 1989, the membership started to stagnate and after several mishaps in 1994-1996, they been losing witnesses. I would guess that there is more ex-JW in former Czechoslovakia than active JW. They became rather obscure and unknown sect and very little penetration in otherwise deeply secular society. In 1950-1980, there were huge public trials where many JW were sent to prisons and labor camps. This attracted a mentality of martyrdom, because there are many individuals who feels that they need to sacrifice and die for faith. If you lived under Stalin era, JW offered hope of rescue in impending armageddon.

144,000 in Revelation May not be Referring to Individuals at all!
by objectivetruth ini'm testing a theory.. so many people discuss whether or not 144,000 is a literal number.. i want to discuss, what if 144,000 is not a number of individuals, rather a number of groups of people.. .
while there is no unanimous acceptance or truth, some believe that the book if revelation was written in hebrew originally.
my theory is based in this possibility.

WT teaches that 144,000 is literal since the time of Russell. Russell also predicted/calculated that the great crowd will be 20,736,000,000 (144k x 144k) individuals.

Not here with me. My biological father died rather young, so I am approaching his age before he passed away and I do not have much similar behavior, values, and opinions.

i think i remember hearing something about an apostate being weeded out of bethel but really couldn't have cared less.
i didn't start getting zealous until a couple of years later.. .

I was in my teens, I heard of him in Czechoslovakia in the late 1980's, so he must be already known in the Western JW world for several years. He was invited into Prague several times; I read from the newspaper that he was there around 2006/2007 for some speech at Charles University. He also was in Poland around the same time.
