larc: Acceleration is change in velocity. Velocity has TWO components, speed and direction. Acceleration will be felt if either parameter changes. The force in the bucket is often called centrifugal force, but it only exists in rotational frame of reference. The bucket only feels the force of the rope pulling in and the intertial force of wanting to continue moving in a straight line tangentially from the circle of rotation.

I would just caution you not to put too much stock in a phenomenon just because the government spent a lot of money on it. Look at how much money our government has squandered on toilet seat covers in the past! How much money was wasted on the Vietnam War? There are many different agendas going on within government. The scientific method is usually lost in the static of all of these competing agendas.
The same is true with large corporations, such as Sony. If we want objective information, we are going to need to look outside into the acedemic sector where experiments are published for public view and can be replicated. Secrecy is not conducive to scientific progress.

I don't mean to be rude, but the fact that you value a dictionary definition of Science and scientific theories shows that you really are ignorant in this particular area. Dictionaries do not provide technical definitions - they provide popular usage. Science has it's own technical language that is different than popular usage. In this case the word "theory" means something much different than the dictionary definition.
Look up "scientific theory" on a search engine and look for a technical definition of the word. It would also be a great opportunity to educate yourself on what science really is - read about the scientific method. You still have not provided a superior system of knowledge over the scientific method. Do you have any ideas?

Neablis: she agreed to do a test and we are proceeding with the test, the tests posted before were before she joined the board.
Saffron is just insulted at how she is being treated almost sub-human without due cause. Really Nabelis, would you feel good about performing a test for people who treat you the way jan and others are treating Saffron? But shes doing it anyway.
Naeblis you sound relativley neutral, would you agree to being the 'control' in the test? (I dont know about having someone pick out the images who is calling the test subject 'dumb' and 'ignorant' as good impartial scientific judge on this) Would you be willing to pick out a target for saffron? Just pick a graphic that can either be scanned or is already online, inform her when you have it picked out and we'll proceed. Again, no hints please.

Hey for all y'all that were discussing gravity, here is an article showing how we might just be wrong in our current understanding of gravity...

In this article, it details that satelites sent out into space aren't obeying the known laws of physics..then there is an article after that saying. oh wait..weve explained it, it turns out its a heat signature in the satelite..then another article after it says oops, i guess we were wrong, the satelites are not obeying the laws of physics after all..dang and we were so sure we had it right.

There is perhaps no current problem of greater importance to astrophysics and cosmology than that of "dark matter". The controversy, as the name implies, is centered around the notion that there may exist an enormous amount of matter in the Universe which cannot be detected from the light which it emits. This is "stuff" which cannot be seen directly. So what makes us think that it exists at all? Its presence is inferred indirectly from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations.
The basic principle is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass there for gravity to stop all the objects flying apart. When such velocity measurements are done on large scales, it turns out that the amount of inferred mass is much more than can be explained by the luminous stuff. Hence we infer that there is dark matter in the Universe. There are many different pieces of evidence on different scales. And on the very largest scales, there may be enough to "close" the Universe, so that it will ultimately re-collapse in a Big Crunch.
basically what it is saying in that quote is, our current understanding of gravity is that it is caused by mass. Now when scientitsts observe distant objects, they see by observation that they are behaving in ways that they shouldnt be considering the amount of mass they have.
So instead of saying, hmmm..perhaps gravity isnt caused by mass after all but something else, the scientists say oh that must mean there is some mystical invisible dark matter that makes up for the mass we fail to observe.
Please refer to my post about the moon being made of cheese. people say extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, but sometimes extraordinary proof produces extraordinary denial for skeptics.
Critical thinking is a good thing, however too much critical thinking blinds us to new discoveries and impeeds scientific progress instead of aiding it.
