I have no idea what the answer is. I'm Mexican American and my heart is pulled in the opposite direction of my mind.

And this issue has brought out racist feelings from a lot of poeple, myself included.

Yo tambien, Sandy. Me too. Warlock

The Farmers Branch city council ( a suburb of Dallas, Tx.) has voted unanimously to make English the official language of the city

    Jim-_TX

The company that I work for has a production/assembly facility in Farmers Branch, TX. I can tell you - for a fact - that there is a larger majority of 'other' nationalities - and not Hispanics. I am not sure the nationality... it's some sort of Asian cultures... and not just one. Several.

Whatever the nationallity of the "legals" or "illegals"..........if you want to live in a country that is not your birth country.....then learn the language. The Polish, Hungarian, Czechs, Croats, Serbs, and many more who came the the U.S. shores 100 years ago might have kept their original "tongue" at home and in family but the majority learned the language....broken as is may have been.......of their adopted country. It was a must in order to become a U.S. citizen (the dream of the majority.) And I am out front in the statement....."This is America. Why should I have to press #1 to continue in English?"

I do..however..agree with the work ethics of the newcomers to the U.S.. Their work ethic puts most of us Americans to shame. They will do what it takes to better themselves. On the other hand....we have too many "original" U.S. citizens (and I don't mean the American Indians) who think they have "entitlements" (and I'm not pin-pointing any race either....so don't even go there) without any effort at all. And they are the ones who probably do the most bitching about "foreigners."

Who is to blame for the influx of "foreigners" and "illegals?" Hmmmmmmmmmmmm............could it be the same ones who are in charge of the policies of the U.S. government? I think they are called POLITICIANS!

Just the two cents worth of someone who has spent almost 45 yeas in industry and labor.

this is not about race at all....anyone of any race is welcome to go through the proper legal channels and become a LEGAL resident !

Yep, that's exactly how I feel. I think the cry of 'racism' is a very lazy answer to a complicated problem.

Whatever the nationallity of the "legals" or "illegals"..........if you want to live in a country that is not your birth country.....then learn the language.

Amen and hallelujah! Well I don't mean praise jah exactly ... erm, well then how about: Hear Hear! Or Bob's your uncle. Or substance.

So they are requesting that owners violate Federal Fair-Housing and Anti-Discrimination Laws?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh man, those Red-Necks crack me up! Last I checked, penalties can be as severe as LOSING THE SUBJECT PROPERTY to the party discriminated against for repeat offenders.

I can see it now, asking Blacks if they legally emigrated from Africa, maybe asking for their "papers." Wonder how much that city council is going to get sued for the first time anyone is discriminated (or feels they have been discriminated) against?

Oh that would be Texas where they only discriminate against brown people. I guess Asians and Blacks are exempt?

As far as having "English as an official language", I'm sorry but the land of "fixin' to" (and numerous other expressions like "deeeeewwwww wut" in place of "could you repeat that please?" delivered with a vacuous expression and copious mouth breathing) seems to have already exempted itself from using any form of English that I am familiar with.

But if you like the furiners talking all funny and stuff you must hate America I guess.

I too am tired of hearing how racist I am because I don't like the country being invaded by illegals. Round em all up and send em back.

I'd also like to see the process streamlined and simplified somewhat as well.

This is my position as well. The work I do for one of my clients very frequently puts me in front of illegal Mexicans. While I certainly want our borders secured and don't want people taking advantage of services they are not entitled to, I also don't understand why it has to take so freaking long for them to become legal. I have never received a satisfying answer to that question.

It's also worthy of note that Mexico is particularly tough on illegal immigrants coming from Central America into their country!

I too would like to see the process simplified, and I welcome people of all races who--like immigrants of the past--are looking to embrace the American dream. But those who have no interest in learning English or becoming a part of the American "melting pot," and those who continue to march only under the flags of their former country--and who think they have some kind of right to live here--I say, "Adios."

How is it you're okay with businesses taking advantage of illegal immigrants' vulnerability?
Before I comment on anything else, could you point me to something, anything , I said that would lead one to conclude that that is my position?

That was my point, poorly made I suppose. I know you're not okay with that.

Different situation. And they were all nationalized long ago. Read a book.

    ?? Knee-jerk.

I think you're thinking about the Appalachian mountain people.

Minister amos in response to your post discrimination has to do with race not legal resident status. Most documents presented by illegals are forged or stolen identities. btw Hablo espanol fluentamente

Perhaps MinisterAmos should be defrocked until the reverend can refrain from using the term redneck Texans in a diatribe on prejudice.

Did it ever occur to anyone that Farmer's Branch is making a mostly symbolic statement simply because the State and Federal governments (both parties) simply will not address this problem? Talk about some hypocrisy - you can get your nomination rejected by congress if you had an illegal Costa Rican as your kid's nanny for a couple of years, but they can't come up with a clear stand on millions of illegals pouring across in plain sight.

I live in neighboring Carrollton, and I think it took a lot of guts to make the stand that Farmer's Branch did.

Maybe not as much as holding out in the Alamo, but still a lot of guts.
