If such a universal consciousness were not "conscious" in the sense that we might normally attribute it, why might it exhibit many of the mannerisms of a conscious entity?
Well, we as humans may be the manifestation of consciousness that was working at an unconscious level for millions of years. If all that exists is of God and God, then we are a part of God.
Or we may be thinking too much of ourselves and are just advanced bacterior that is damaging the planet while a perfect invisible intelligence looks on dispassionately. I have given up dogma and the defence of belief. I am just squirreling around for nuts to bury that may help me through the winter if I can remember where I put them!
Ross - I have read your posts with interest over the months and not always commented to avoid clashing with you as on the occasions that I have, you have been so reasonable and helpful. You have helped me mellow and understand the essence of Christianity and its many colours. You are an open minded fellow who while having a connection with Christianity and Calvinism due to your personal experiences still has the capacity to seek and explore. The opposite of a closed mind.
As this thread demonstrates - the more closed the mind the more excessive verbatim.
Where your travels take you is an unknown road but I would venture to suggest that the further you go the more uncomfortable you will become with labels because labels are restrictive and as an ex JW you have proved that you are not a person that is prepared to accept limits.

the infamous one
LT,
As you will be aware, from my regular statements about it, I have never permitted myself to grow stagnant in my beliefs. I allow them to evolve and regularly sift them and strip out all that is redundant. I'm acutely aware that I have sprung from the WTS cooking pot and this adds an element of caution to what I verbalise. I believe it is process, and hopefully one that I will continue to enjoy until my dying day.
One of the most thought provoking books that I have read in recent years about the subject of Christianity, its history and its modern day fear of metaphysical probings is 'Living Christianity' by Martin Palmer.
Here we have a Christian historian who has no fear of thinking outside of the box, and who turns many accepted Christian ideologies on their head, where frankly they make a lot more sense. His work in the field of ecology is inspiring and his philosophical demand that humans view themsleves as no more important in the eyes of God than a daffodil or an insect is iconoclastic in contemporary Christian terms, but plucks at the essence of the 'Sermons' on the Mount.
Cheers - HS
Praise be to the Pantheon of Gods!
WAC is back!
YES HE IS. I HAVE TAKE OVER HIM. I AM HIS ALTER EGO. ROCK ON NVR! GOD IS NO WHERE.
Both of my IP's at home were down as far as this board was concerned. All other web-sites worked just fine. At first, I could log on but see no posts at all. Then, I could see posts but when I posted, I only got an error message. I was only able to start posting as of a few minutes ago.
I emailed Vinny about the problem I was having a few days ago. VINNY YOU'RE AN ANIMAL. I think he is taking a WELL DESERVED break.
Atheists will look at a nature show and see one thing, believers will look at the same nature show and see another. That is what this thread was all about. Our beliefs DICTATE what we perceive and experience as knowledge. There is no such thing (in practicality) as "non-belief". Our beliefs affect us now and I believe, after we die. We take them with us.
I have received IM comments regarding this thread from long time posters who do wish that there was more openess on this board toward belief in God. I feel the same way. There certainly is vast reason to suspect God's existence. Many millions claim as I do direct confirmation of his existence through revelation. So, for me the question is permanently answered. Personally I'll continue to "see" God and give him thanks regardless of the consequences. Atheists are welcome to have their beliefs as well.
Just a closing point to Ponder....
Atheists say that there is no such thing as morality. Yet, they tell themselves (as do others for different reasons) that its wrong to lie, steal, commit adultery etc. They no doubt do this in part because of the knowledge that this is very damaging to relationships. I have no problem with a pragmatic approach to morality. But, who pays the piper? Why do we as humans violate the morality we've decided to adopt? Why do we just accept cliches like "that's just human nature". We're not talking about some standard in a holy book. We're talking about standards common to adherents of most world views. So, we'll all just judge others for the same crimes that we are guilty of? This is not acceptable to me. Does nobody pay the piper?
Yes, that was an amazing post by hillary_step many years ago by the same name that I still recall. That post really inflamed and charged a sense of JUSTICE in my soul. Weird that I still remember it. A truly JWD classic post and worth reviewing.
What sets Christianity apart from all other religions and world views, is that it answers this question. Neither do I want myself or ANY of my worst enemies to ever suffer what is due any of us for our moral crimes against each other.
THIS is the question we will all face when we die. And die we all will.
Ciao
You and others "wish that there was more openness on this board toward belief in God."
But at the same time deny the openness to the possibility that there may be no God. Isn't it more that you and others wish that people would just see things your way?
These are discussion boards, though more often it appears that people from both camps use them as pulpits.
I still hold out hope that one of these days you will actually answer one of my posts. You're starting to make me feel like I have a good point here.
There certainly is vast reason to suspect God's existence.
So I "suspect" the last word is to "ambiguity".
