Without excessively hyping it more, I think it's time we get off our hands and start working hard on alternative energy sources. I am sick of specious arguments to block nuclear (fission and fusion), hydro, solar, and wind energy. If we can generate radioactive waste, we can utilize it as energy (disposing of radioactive wastes in the environment is a waste of energy). We have been warned since 1973, and nothing has changed.

Other things we have had are excessive waste of resources, failure to go metric, and no advancement toward curing diseases. It is obvious that we are run by companies that want to keep us sick, dumb, and broke. And they don't give a fxxx what it does to the environment or our resources.

I watched that movie with my middle schooler and I DO believe what Gore said. As long as people continue to poo poo the concept that we are screwing up the planet and turn a lazy ass shoulder to it, it will continue to be dessimated out from under us. I look forward to Obama becoming president and finally kicking somebodys ASS in the rich oil companies and getting us back on track.

Are capitalism and Dick Cheney ruining Jupiter too?

Apparently the CO2 being spewed by our Martian Rovers are really ruining the Martian climate.....

I watched "An Inconvenient Truth". It came across as "The Al Gore Show". I've seen far better documentaries. Al Gore doesn't get it. You can't consume your way out of environmental degradation with "green" products and technology. Whether one believes in human caused climate change or not, our collective impact on the planet is undeniable. What is lost on most people is the scale of what industrial consumer culture does to the earth. This photographer's web site attempts to show the reality behind some of the numbers we hear and read about in various sources.

I wonder if Americans who stick their heads in the sand have any idea how educated Europeans view them?

Funny how the caricature was performed by an American comedian.

I hope "educated" Europeans can stop looking down their long noses long enough to "get it" and not resort to reflexive opposition.

I wonder how many American care how "educated" Europeans view them.

I don't think anyone is saying that we shouldn't work towards a reduction of pollutants. America's environment has cleaned up tremendously in the last 30-40 years. But I also think that caution should be taken before embracing the cult-like mentality of the anthropomorphic global warming view. Is carbon output a factor? Maybe. Is the sun's output a factor? Maybe. Will the world end? No. Is technology progressing so that alternative sources of energy will eventually overtake fossil fuels? Yes. Should politics override good science and the market's adoption of such technology? No.

WTWizrd, what in the world does "failure to go metric" have to do with this topic?

Oh - I get it. Atmospheric temperature numbers are so close together in metric that we would be less likely to notice the warming...also, we could be driving our cars at 100 and really only be going 61!

Brilliant. I will have to email both Gore and Ralph Nader.

Burn, I realise not all Americans are comfortable with continually pumping crap and raping the earth. I was only targeting people who stick their heads in the sand, of which many are Europeans, too. Compare America's population with the resources the nation consumes, and it's obvious something needs to be done. That's why the 'we don't care' attitude is just not acceptable.

We've only got one earth, and it turns out that Yahweh isn't going to get us off the hook with the new system after all. Gone are the days where I can allow myself to ignore the scientific community.
