I'm a very much a bible follower so any christian faith I look at is measured against it! Take christmas a typical celebration often embraced by ex-JW's why? I can google it and find out for myself its pagan origins quite easily, I can then look at the whole 'Golden calf' biblical story where God punishes israelites for trying to put egyptian practices in line with there belief in God, if its ok to celebrate christmas despite it's origins then God was wrong to punish israelites for the same reason? you see my quandary?
Can we diferentiate between what is purely a JW issue and what is seen as wrong biblically?
And if we disagree with a principle clearly condemed in the bible then surely we should admit it?
The golden calf- the actual bowing down and worshipping of an image. Pretty black and white.
The observance of a day- Paul was pretty clear in Romans chapter 14.
| Rom 14:4 | | Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. |
| Rom 14:5 | | One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day [alike]. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. |
| Rom 14:6 | | He that regardeth the day, regardeth [it] unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard [it]. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. |
| Rom 14:7 | | For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. |
| Rom 14:8 | | For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. |
| Rom 14:9 | | For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. |
| Rom 14:10 | | But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. |
The WT on one hand gives a very balanced viewpoint in saying that we do not need to explore and uncover the origin of everything and remove all traces of paganism from our lives- it is what it means now, today to people. Good advice! They apply this to anniversaries/wedings/wedding rings and a host of other things. They have another set of standards they apply to activites they want their members to refrain from such as birthdays, holidays, etc...which again, the origin is unknow and obsolete to the average person. Why the difference? To create a wall, a separation between their members and the outsiders so that the JW will not feel comfortable around 'worldy persons'....building the 'where else is there to go' concept.
Reniaa you sure do like to ask questions you already know the answer to don;t you you? hmm
