Just a question, when it is said that "He earned 15 hours of Latin, 21 hours of classical Greek, and a single 2-hour credit class"

What does that mean? Please excuse us poor non-English speaking people; what does "earn 15 hours of Latin" mean? 15 hours a week, a month, during the whole stay, or what? and the "single 2-hour credit class"?

Wouldn't the 15hrs stand for 'credit hours'...? As in, he did 15hrs of Latin? I'm not familiar with 'credit hours' either Theoldhippie...but I assume that's what it means.

Where I'm from, if you take a topic that's say, 6 units....it means that the subject entails you doing a combined amount of 6,000 words in essay form throughout the duration of your topic. It has nothing to do with hours, yet you still receive 'credit' for it in the form of 6 units off of your degree. Lol....

I think in America the credit/topic system is different.

Paul Johnson had a degree in Theology and read Greek and Hebrew. He split from the Bible Students shortly after J.Rutherford took over and formed the Laymen's Home Missionary Movement which are still around.

Wouldn't giving diploma's for Gilead be considered 'worldly'? maybe they need to make up a new word for it in jwese so they can be different from the worldy institutions they are attempting to copy.

    TheOldHippie,

I am not sure about the Univ. of Cinn. as of 1914, but generally speaking one (1) credit hour is earned per semester for passing a class that meets for one (1) hour weekly for the semester. So, for example, if a student earns three (3) credits per semester in a single class it would mean he or she passed a class that met for three (3) hours weekly during that semester.

Why can't the society try to set up bible study groups on campus

More than one person here has said they have seen the JWs set up a table on campus to try to interest people on what they are selling.

Here in Canada 3 credits = one course. One course is ususally 13 weeks long and 3 hours per week per semester = 39 hours in the classroom. As Marvin above noted a course that meets for 2 hours per week would get a lower credit. Grades are only given out at the end of the sememster. Some courses go 2 semesters and are recieve 6 credits. Courses are often sequential. You can't take any level 200 course until you have complete a level 100 course. You can't take 300 until 100 and 200 are completed. However you can take any number of 100 level courses at the same time or 200 or 300. And there are some courses that specify that you can't take a course numbered 205 until 105 is completed.

    BUT that is now.

Who knows how they credited courses back then or how different countries credit their courses. If he dropped out in his first year he may have only had one semester

Going back to the link of his second page of his transcript it looks like he completed years 1 and 2 and then dropped out after the first sememster not even recieving all his grades for that sememster - he may have just stopped going to some of his classes while he got involved with the Bible Students. If the credits are the same then getting a grade for a credit of 3 in a semester meant he was in the classroom for 39 hours for that class.

    Lady Lee,

I remember seeing a video of a GB member talking about higher education and comparing it to "shooting oneself in the head." Perhaps his name was Loesch? It is a real gem.

He also explained that all the continents were torn apart at the time of the flood--yes, not continental drift over millions of years, but in one year--continents moved thousands of miles. He also went on to say that in the new system they would all come back together so that we would have one landmass. He further claimed that snakes would get "pretty mouth parts."

Maybe the people doing the research could be shown this enlightening video if you can find it. I think the flood and snake info was in another talk.

If these videos and audios from a GB member aren't enough to convince someone of the ignorance of the higher ups in the WTS, I don't know what is.

Lloyd Barry and Albert Schroeder were the only ones that received a degree to the best of my memory. I will try to dig up references.

Ray Franz graduated high school and went immediately to full-time preaching
    Covington was a lawyer
Dunlap - Franz says he was "of ordinary education" (CoC p 274) but that could mean anything
Can't find much on any of them

Ed Dunlap indeed was of ordinary education - public school system in semi-rural Oklahoma. He was, however, a great self-educated reader and probably had a greater grasp of biblical history than most Doctors of Theology. His brother was of the same background.

Covington was indeed a legitimate lawyer. There was also a legitimate medical Dr. (Dixon) who was for a while in the medical clinic at Bethel and retired to south Oklahoma City.

There is contraversy on the true nature of the Freddy Franz "Rhodes Scholar" education - it seems that he may have applied at one time, but was not really a true Rhodes Scholar. There are also IIRC, issues with his U.S. college education. It seems that he may have exaggerated his own educational importance, just like "Judge" Rutherford embellished his judgeship.
