Interesting responses. Here in scandanavia our taxes are over 50% and we have an excellent social system, but if everyone got away with cheating the country would go bankrupt. This week the tax and customs officers did a random check on passangers leaving the country on holiday, they found 72 people going away that were receiving social payments and were not entitled to go on holiday. They also found passangers carrying large amounts of money in their luggage, again they were on benefits and working on the side.

This country makes it clear that if you cheat you should be stopped, most people agree that if we are going to keep our high standard and still be willing to pay such a huge amount in taxes, then we do not stand by and allow cheating.

When I lived in England we worked hard to support ourselves as pioneers and would not dream of asking a penny from the state, that attitude seems to have gone down the drain along with many other long lost qualities among the"brotherhood".

so what you guys are saying now is: it's ok to steal, as long as you're feeding children with the income from the theft?

No, I'm saying that the county deemed them eligible for food and medical benefits after they went through a process based on the premise of providing needed food and medical for the child. Children are first, then the adults based on need and the capacity to work. It is possible that the mother and child recieved Medicaid but the father did not. There are time limits, this kind of help does not go on forever.

I suppose that's why I started this thread, Mrs. Jones. I haven't thought it all through at all, and I just wanted to hear some others' opinions.

I'm sure it will work it's way out Awsnap. They can't stay in that situation forever. The system isn't set up that way anymore.

I'm really for unfortunate ones getting food/shelter/medical.

but some people got the "system" set. these kind of people figured out that they should not work.

Evidently Apostate, I think you've hit the nail. Nothing that's been outlined sounds as though these people are making out, it sounds utterly unpleasant. Anyone who accepts life on this level, has larger issues. Again, assuming the assessment is correct.

As a former caseworker for the department of human services I can tell you that unless you can prove that one or both of them are earning unreported income or are paying less in rent and utilities than what they claim, there's nothing to report. Welfare already knows that neither of them are working and that they haven't been declared disabled, so they healthy enough to work according to the state.

I don't know what your state is, but I believe the rule for Medicaid is pretty consistent. Biological parents who are also meet the income guidelies are eligible for Medicaid as long as they have custody of a minor child. The sad irony is that people who are sick but yet to be declared disabled, (which is an uphill battle), but do not have minor children aren't eligible, even if they meet the income guidelines.

If everything you say about this couple is correct, they are just one more example of how the system is worked by careless, thoughtles people. It's a shame, but it's not a crime.

I would still rather see a few abusers get away with it, than not see people in real need get help.

But having abusers 'get away with it' makes it harder for real people in need, doesn't it? Personally, I am in agreement with Farkel and the others who side with 'report them.' I hear too often how our system must 'protect the children.' Fine, take the children away then if that is their main goal. Otherwise, sad as it is, children are hurt by dumb parents and these people sound dumber than a bag of rocks.

Besides, I think the children will do just fine without the government giving them all this money so they won't have to work. In our state, children are eligible for healthcare programs like Famis for low income households (ie. people who work but don't make a livable wage). Unfortunately, these programs often lead to parents not getting married but living like they are married because getting married would lead to their losing out on these benefits.
