    Sam Whiskey:

Unions are why American jobs are going overseas... When an American job can be done for a fraction of the cost, why not? Cheaper wages = more profits, it's just smart money at work.

Boy, some people are dense. Those American jobs can be done at a fraction of the cost overseas EVEN AT MINIMUM WAGES, WITH NO UNIONS!

I know two Tool Die workers. One had to retrain because he could not keep a job due to company after company folding up in the 1970s. His job was NON UNION! The other one was earning $15, an hour for a highly skilled job, in which he repaired low quality tool dies from China. ONE MORE TIME, FOOLIUS! HIS JOBS WERE NEVER UNION!

GOODNESS YOU ARE A PATHETIC, MINDF*CKED IDEOLOGUE TO MAKE ARGUMENTS SUCH AS THOSE!

AS I SAID. NON UNION JOBS HAVE BEEN SHIPPED OVERSEAS!

MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS CANNOT COMPETE WITH CHINESE WORKERS AT A DOLLAR AN HOUR!

TRY LIVING ON A DOLLAR AN HOUR!

    BETTER YET, MOVE TO CHINA!

Villa, do you buy products made in China? I know you do, so we'll dispense with your petty argument that maybe you do, maybe don't, that's childs play. So when you buy your T-Shirt made in China, do you feel remorseful? Better check your "Made in China" stickers, they're on everything.

I also worked in the grocery stores for many years.

    My thoughts on unions:

It was the American company Walmart with their underpaid American non-union labor brought down wages for all grocery workers in California. Walmart broke the union...

    No China to blame here.

Jeff, this was a great thread. Thanks. My husband has worked as a non union painter and as a Master Journeyman Union painter. There are lazy workers in BOTH. The difference is as you stated, do you want it done RIGHT???? The other difference is you can't survive or support a family on non union painter wages.

Another positive on the construction trade unions is if you suck, you don't work. Because layoffs happen when the jobs end and when a new job gets bid on next time, guess what, if you were a lazy piece of shit, you don't get called back.

Even in this economy my husband went back to work after his head injury three years ago. He works and works and works and when jobs and projects end, he is the first one to get called back. He is worth every dollar he earns.

The bad thing is that a lot of illegal immigrants are getting into the union somehow with fake paperwork. They go into the shops and take LESS money than they are supposed to. The union leaders are the lazy pieces of shit who are not checking the shops like they are supposed to because they are too busy eating donuts at the hall. So this goes on left and right.

I can tell my track house was made by non union illegals. We had to repair our tile roof last month. When my husband tore it apart he could tell the roofers did not have a clue what they were doing and there were no Journeymen roofers on the job. During the storms last month our 11 year old neighborhood replaced almost every roof because of this. I could go on and on with what we've discovered about our construction.

I think we need card check. It's too hard to unionize anymore. Even though middle management in companies is working long hours for less money, at the woof of a possible union vote, the intimidation tactics begin. They view it as a chance to advance to upper echelons in companies. So employees are brow beaten and are afraid to vote in a union.

I hope we will soon be able to thank Governor Walker for a revival of organized labor.

Sam Whiskey, if corporations shipped our jobs to china and everything is made in china then how are people supposed to purchase American? You are mad at the unions when it is the fault of our trade policies.

Blue, I'm not mad at anyone. Just an observation that cheaper has to get the job done. Otherwise, we Americans can't afford a T-Shirt made in Los Angeles. Unless of course, it's made by illegal Mexicans...

Meijer stores. Based in Michigan and in several Midwestern States. Union. Years ago the cashiers made good union wages and the benefits were outstanding. I took a job as a cashier in 2006 after being laid off from a retail job. I worked with cashiers who had been there a few years and they were making up there around $14-18 an hour. I made minimum wage. You have to pay union dues whether you join or not. I joined and paid dues and $18 a week for crummy outpatient insurance. I made minimum wage and had to take the worst hours due to my lack of seniority. The union had been emasculated before I got to work for Meijer it would seem. What a blasted bummer. On union wages I could have supported my grandsons and me.

Unions: remember us? We brought you weekends.

Sam Wisky, lots of companies who have never been unionized send their operations over seas. These companies find the idea of paying workers even minimum wage too much. They like slave labor settings and are too impatient to wait for conditions in the US to permit slave labor. So they go overseas for their slave labor. They also contribute to the formation of this plutocracy, the new gilded age that is developing fast around us. Our economy is on its head and this is just where those companies want it. They do not want workers to have any power or rights. Don't buy that blame it on the unions bull.

    to this entire thread!

This is what pisses me off the most and I don't even know how to express it. Okay, obviously businesses need to make a profit to be worthwhile. Public corporations need to make a profit to be worthwhile to their investors on the stock market. Fine. No argument.

But corportions somehow find a way to pay their executives exhorbitant amounts of money. This cannot be challenged in any way without being labeled a "money redistributing socialist or even commie." But it's a legitimate argument that if corporations want to stay profitable, they want to be on the Fortune 500, etc. and they can afford to OVERPAY (yeah it is overpaying. sorry. IT JUST IS) their executives, yet when it comes to paying their work force they come up with this crap about the bottom line and profits blah blah blah!

All workers should unionize, demand higher wages and I feel like I can guaran-fing-tee it that 1) executive pay would go down and/or 2) there would be more fair elections because billionaire corporations would have less to donate to buy their politicians and/or 3) prices may go up because corporations are accustomed to making X for profit and it would be unacceptable to them to make less. All of this shipping jobs overseas should be called on the carpet. Companies that do that are greedy and unpatriotic. Republicans are greedy and unpatriotic too. For all their wrapping themselves in the flag while at the same time taking a dump on it with their policies!!!

I hope there is a great Labor revivial in the USA! The 30 year old Reagan experiment has failed!

Blue, while I feel your pain, the truth is, that corporations cannot be bound by what "we" think they should make. How many of you have been business owners? If you made a million dollars a year, would you give it away because you felt "sorry" for your employees? Probably not, you'd do just as the corp. execs do, keep as much as you can for you and your company. It's simple logic that the left doesn't get.

If you knew how a business runs, and what the requirments of Wall Street were, you'd understand, but most people (99.9%) don't. And when you engage them in conversation about the markets, their eyes glaze over.

    Sam,

She wasn't talking about business owners. Owners have every right to their profits. Sapphire was talking about executives, management and financial. There's just no legitimate reason a CEO should make 240 times what an average worker makes. Are they really that much more valuable?

Solve the problem using the "counter revolution" -- that is the "counter" at the store:

    1. Try to shop for american made products
    2. Try to Shop local (please dont purchase food with frequent flyer miles)
    3. Try to purchase from "Mom and Pop" shops
    4. Take a look at your 401k and any stock investments -- are they in line with the "American/Local First" ideal?

This will flow cash to those businesses that will "bootstrap" the economy. Further Unionization (Im not talking about busting unions -- im just not really sure their expansion is a "good thing") and increased taxes will not fix the problem.

The top 1% of the wealthy have the financial flexibility to avoid any taxes the american people have the political will to pass. Short of socializing their entire asset base, you "cant touch em'"...

    Remember "Counter Revolution"...
