Most Unions will die...they're not competitive.

The legacy of past union struggles with big business includes--

A 40 hour work week- business said it was uncompetitive

Time and a half pay for overtime was uncompetitive

    vacations were uncompetitive

Work and safety laws are uncompetitive

    etc, etc, etc-

Here is average salary by state. Don't forget that to become a teacher at all you must have bachelors degree plus teaching credentials. That is no small price. These people make less on average than thier counterparts in the private sector. How are we supposed to attract good teachers to one of the most important jobs of all?

    Bachelor's Degree.

    Teacher Certification.

    Must pass Praxis exams.

Must intern as a teacher's aid (while being unpaid) for a semester.

That's asking a lot when other professions out there pay just as much if not more. I've considered changing careers to become a teacher. In addition to the hurdle or being an unpaid teacher's assistant, I was also put off by the fact that many teachers recieve very little respect from the students, parents, and principals.

I wanted to tutor part time for the local Sylvan learning center so I contacted them and inquired about any openings.

They wanted certified teachers and the starting pay is $10 / hour.

Needless to say, I never applied.
