Can the Bible be proved wrong?

OMG Tec - did you really just say this:

Well, JIFB, if you were to teach your son that he could never live in peace... or pilot a plane, or become president (or another country's equivalent to that), or find a loyal wife, or be faithful to a wife when he got one... and he followed your teaching because that is all he knew, then would it not be on you if he never knew that he could do those things?

I thought you were still able to make sense. This isn't isn't even 'straw man' bad - it's just plain borderline nutjob - you're really going there? I had hoped for much better from you. Sorry you're losing it, it's not too late. Come back to reality. You have lost your grasp on what's real. You want so much to believe in the Judeo- Christian concepts that have been perpetuated by religions and revelationists alike - but why is it they only work for ones born in a culture and geographic area that idealized such legends in in recent history (unlike eastern cultures and lands - I mean, if you told me you were from Delhi your posts would certainly have a different meaning)?

Anyway what you said doesn't even make sense, especially if you're trying to reach me personally as nothing about my family situation matches your description. You seemed so nice and not super gullible - you were able to see through the JWs but apparently not nutjob internet presonal revelationist posters. Too bad.

Justnfrombethel: Are you here to add something worthwhile to this discussion or just to insult people with broader viewpoints than your own? As you admitted, you have a short attention span, otherwise you might have noticed that Aguest never claimed to 'hear voices', she stated that she doesn't..

First, socrates was not a follower of the judeo-christian god. He was a polytheist, he believed in a great many gods and didn't give any great reverance to Yahweh or Adonai in particular over the pantheon of gods he believed in.- JonathanH

Unfortunately, this is an error, dear JonH (again, peace to you!). True, Socrates WAS polytheistic; however, he came to hear the true God sometime prior to his last years. He did at the time he gave his final address to the Senate. - Shelby

I would like to see your sources saying that he was a follower specifically of the judeo-christian god, or if that's just an assertion because you like socrates. - JonathanH

I received this truth from my Lord, the Holy One of Israel, JAHESHUA, the Chosen One of JAH, dear one; - Shelby

Could there be a more perfect example of the absurdity of "faith"?

If a person go to a library, and find a book where the central plot elements are magic fruit and raising from the death, and the first impulse is to assume the book is full of truth unless it can be "Be proved wrong".. well, noone is ever going to prove it wrong. It cant be done through logic and reason. Thats just how the world works.

But since that persons mental image of the world now contains Snowwhite and the seven dwarf as truth, i think its fair to say something is completely wrong with that question. It tell us nothing about the truth-value of the object we ask the question about.

I take it as the greatest admission of defeat that the question in this topic is NOT raised as "Do you think evidence XYZ support the bible", but right from the onset everyone knows the burden of evidence need to be shifted, and a retreat to the possible is the only option left to support the bible.

The Quiet One Aguest never claimed to 'hear voices', she stated that she doesn't..

According to my memory Aguest has claimed to hear voices, or at least a voice, in many other posts. This voice guides her and is the basis of her faith. The Bible is just an aside. She even knows the name of the being that talks to her but the name is too long for me to spell. No doubt she will fill you in, though it may take a few pages.

Without doubt there are two views on this issue. OK, lets say, the scriptuyres can be proven wrong, so what? Would a yes or no make a difference in the world we live in? I have a library of books on my shelf, what have they done for me? Solomon said it best, 'All is vanity.'

Trevor: If that's so, I apologise for saying that. I was only referring to what she stated in this thread that she didn't 'hear' the voice in an AUDITORY way, based on the physical sense of hearing, which seemed to be what justnfrombethel was referring to. I've decided that, unless asked, I'm just going to shut up and see where the thread takes itself, I keep being too defensive, probably because of my own issues at the moment.. Anyway, thanks for your posts :)

There is no need to apologise to me or as far as I can see anyone.

I have enjoyed reading your posts and I hope you keep contributing.

Quiet One, you are super duper polite and you clearly care about other people. That is very cool in my book.

On the other hand, it seems to be causing you unnecessary stress. I'm not telling you to be more selfish but rather to let other people's feelings be hurt - or not hurt - for themselves. You don't need to carry the emotional burdens of others when you have your own.

Most of us posting here went through the same sorts of questions and exploration and emotional turmoil that you are going through. It is very hard to accept that so much of what we believed for so long cannot be proved because it isn't falsifiable, and most of the stuff that is has been shown to be false. But like it or not that is the case with religious belief, especially that which is based on the Bible and other 'holy' books.

Critical thinking, logic, and reason are all so important. They can lead you to truth that will set you free if you let them.

Also, it might help you to widen your scope of inquiry a bit, IMO. Rather than try to prove or disprove the Bible or Christianity or the existence of YHWH just read as much as you can from all sides of religion. It isn't a mere two-sided coin of theism versus atheism.

Most of all, be patient. It's a long road. I've been on it for around three years and I'm nowhere close to any finish line. The greatest progress I have made, in my opinion, is that no matter what I believe at present, I am willing to be wrong about it and that's perfectly ok with me. Believe me, you'll feel a lot better when you get to that point, even if you still have no clue what to believe or what "the truth" is.
