I'll change when my opinion when I see these ones doing something for real. All else is just message board big talk and not worth much.
Cool.
Back on the subject:
$69 million in California welfare money drawn out of state
Las Vegas tops the list with $11.8 million spent at casinos or taken from ATMs, but transactions in Hawaii, Miami, Guam and elsewhere also raise questions. Officials say budget cuts hinder investigations.
Reporting from Sacramento — More than $69 million in California welfare money, meant to help the needy pay their rent and clothe their children, has been spent or withdrawn outside the state in recent years, including millions in Las Vegas, hundreds of thousands in Hawaii and thousands on cruise ships sailing from Miami.
State-issued aid cards have been used at hotels, shops, restaurants, ATMs and other places in 49 other states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, according to data obtained by The Times from the California Department of Social Services. Las Vegas drew $11.8 million of the cash benefits, far more than any other destination. The money was accessed from January 2007 through May 2010.....
...."If it's a one-time thing in Miami, we would never check that out," said John Haley, commander of the financial crimes division of the San Diego County district attorney's office, who said 24% of all new welfare applications in his jurisdiction contain some form of fraud. "We look for patterns of abuse."

Of the $64.7 billion spent on food stamps last year, $2.5 billion was wasted on improper payments.
So, let's do the math here. Out of $64.7 (- 2.5 ) 62.2 billion in food stamps that went to truly hungry people. Hmmm, sounds like a pretty successful program. We just need to be a little more vigilant at the caseworker level to make sure the $2.5 billion makes it to families and individuals who truly are hungry and need the help.

Got it NC. Sometimes accessing pm's on my iPad can be tricking but I got it.
Oh and by the way, cash aid benefits can no longer be accessed in casinos and the like in California. That was changed a few months ago and it's old news.

So am I understanding something right?
Instead of going after the people who are cheating for fraud... some here are suggesting that the entire system changes so that everyone suffers for the minority who are committing crime (fraud)?
Most people on welfare live below the poverty line. Some take advantage of the system (for whatever reason). But so what? Go after the guilty; not the innocent.
Peace,
Tammy
