I find ignorance all around me it seems -- astrology, new-age beliefs, creationism, militant nationalism, irrational views of self and others. I don't believe this is some innate or genetic quality about people, mind you, just the way their life has played out and the choices they have made.

See thats just plain humanity, people believe different things and just because they dont fit your belief/unbelief system doesnt mean they are "just plain stupid".. thats just a miserable outlook. All those beliefs circulate and some are far out but each person is complex and is not simply made up of belief, there are many sides to a person and each of us have our dumb side, including you. Dont you think its just miserable to slam peoples beliefs rather than look for the other identifying marks of a person? The worlds got a lot of nice people in it, just seems you always want to slam anyone who believes differently to you. Dunno, perhaps I'm just feeling cranky or something.

This thread reminds me of a Public Discourse given by a member of a Branch Committee that I once heard. He spent over an hour trying to convince the audience that only 30% of JW's would survive Armaggedon because the other two thirds were not up to speed on reality.

After the talk I approached him. He was sitting smugly in the Chairman's room with just another person present. I said, 'Well, you obviously think your are going to survive, and I know I am. What happens to her?". He gasped as if a kipper had slithered down his underpants and shrugged his shoulders.

So I have to ask Brad, personally I do not think that people are 'just plain stupid' but am I right in thinking that you would define yourself as one of the more elightened ones in this world-view of yours? If so, why do you need to ask the question?.....

Considering the popularity of most mindless television shows, not to mention hare-brained, idiotic commercials, I would have to say that the broadcasting industry recognizes the fact that the majority of their viewers are significantly stupid.

I think that even the most intelligent people are prone to do stupid things . I would have to say yes to your question . There must be some kind of stupid gene that has a way of over riding the common sense gene . I have seen many people destroy their own life with repetative stupidity . It's not hard to see how people can regress into an unruly mass in times of crisis or follow other idiots who seem to lead them to their own stupid end . I think history pretty much shows how stupid the human race is with clowns like adolf hitler , stalin any number of the queens and kings of england and some of the US presidents .
