I didn't say that everyone who disagrees with me is "just plain stupid." Straw man.

Now THAT is the funniest thing I have read all day, darn I needed a good belly laugh.

    Brad,
You have to understand that God made all people special in their own way. God views all people as intelligent and he proved this by sending his son to die and forgive us for our sins. You have to start looking for the individual qualities each and every human has. Remember that God is Love and he loves every human that has ever lived and that ever will live. He also has a plan for each human and through the power and saving grace of our lord Jeeeesssuss, he has a mansion awaitin' in heaven.

I'm kidding of course. Most people are stupid and more importantly most people are weak.

    Hillar Step,

So I have to ask Brad, personally I do not think that people are 'just plain stupid' but am I right in thinking that you would define yourself as one of the more elightened ones in this world-view of yours? If so, why do you need to ask the question?

Admittedly, the title of this thread was written in such a way as to elicit response. As I mentioned, I do not think that people are simply "plain stupid" and that's that. I do believe the average person does not live up to their intellectual potential and simply chooses to remain in a cocoon of ignorance about many things.

For example: My mother is a pretty rational woman. In conversation with her the other day we started talking about human cloning. I said that identical twins are natures way of cloning. She wouldn't believe me. When I tried to explain why this is so my words went in one ear and out the other. Now, is she stupid? No. Is she willingly ignorant about a very important matter? Yes, I believe so.

We live in a world -- especially here in the US -- where most people believe in some form of pseudoscience that better educated people have long since debunked thoroughly. Why is this the case? Are they genetically programmed to be dumb? Again, I don't think that is the case. I believe there are cultural, societal and psychological reasons for peoples lack of intellectual grace.

In a book by Richard Dawkins I read recently he stated that the current understanding of science in the US is a "national educational disgrace." I couldn't agree more.

Do I consider myself one of the "enlightened ones"? Yes and no. I'm not an expert and there are subjects I'm dumber than a doornail in. (I also have a damned time with mathematics). All the same, I believe -- perhaps to no credit of my own -- that I at least recognize intelligence and a good argument. Maybe the JWs even had something to do with this.

I have seen many people destroy their own life with repetative stupidity

i am completely guilty of this, and i would say i'm moderately intelligent. i've known plenty of incredibly intelligent people who simply cannot manage their own lives.

Brad, I agree. Like I said in a post a few days ago, people do what they have to do to survive, so an understanding of, for example, Biology is not required, so they don't study it. But your statement regarding pseudoscience is totally accurate. That's one major reason I think most people are stupid. It seems like real important questions and answers are ignored and almost baseless beliefs are taken as fact, such as, god creating the earth or prayer helping people. And those pseudoscientific beliefs are what make most people stupid.

I think most people are just plain. And that's it. Many don't have a desire to study, or the vehicle by which to do so successfully. Whether that is by circumstance, (like being poor, mentally impaired, lack of intellect, etc), its what makes some people stand out whilst all around mediocrity reigns. I deal with adult students and they aren't stupid really, but many of them don't have a clue how to learn. Throw that in w/little or no critical thinking skills and it makes it hard for someone to make their lives an ongoing learning experience. I would rather be uneducated and happy with my life rather than have a head full of knowledge and be miserable any day.

    SIncerely,
