Yes, Valis. How do you think that I was making MY bio-diesel, that I poured into my 1982 VW Rabbit Pickup?

    Three years ago.

From used vegetable oil from a Mexican food restaurant.

    For 50-cents per gallon.

The tail-pipe smelled like whatever was 'cooked' in the oil. Mine - like chips from the restaurant.

I bought the book - then scrounged the components to use to do the titrations - and then the transesterification of the vege-oil to bio-diesel.

The cool thing about it is that the 'waste' is actually glycerin - or soap. Great soap, too!

    1) Nuke China. That way demand would not be so high.

    2) Pump more oil

    3) Audit the @#%#@% out of the Gas Companies to find out why they keep having 'fires' and 'maintenence' issues at peak usage times.

    4) Increase capacity and Refining Capability (which they wont do)

    5) Establish a true supply and demand pricing system. For some strange reason the gas here is cheaper than the gas in Martinez, yet the Refineries are IN Martinez and I live 3 hours away. HMMMMMMMMMM Price fixing anyone???

    6) Tell the Middle East/Oil Companies/Opec etc..etc.. to take a F-in hike and develop a hyrdogen fuel supply. By FAR the BEST SOLUTION. Let Shell, Exxon, Chevron etc..etc..ROT.

My concern with the finite oil supply isnt so much about the gas- but the enormous amount of petrochemicals we use in our everyday lives.

    princess,

You must be either an ex-elder who still can't handle women who speak

this is not about woman or man...this is about ignorance! (and save the JW bullshit...i never belonged to this silly religion).

i know you give a rats ass about what i say...and you obviously also give a rats ass about what all scientists on the planet say and what the consequences of your and all our energy wasting is! BRAVO to that i say!

by the way...the production of a car that weighs twice as much as necessary also wastes a lot of resources.

lastly...i have no problem with someone who acknowledges the detrimental effects of these cars (not only to the environment but also to other drivers in case of an accident) but who actually needs it and thus has no choice. you on the other hand give a shit about the destruction of the ecosystem just so you can sit in a big car.

    crazy,

if you want to reduce demand nuke the US. you guys are using up nearly 30% of the stuff!

hydrogen is nice but you need an energy source to produce it!

Realist: My brother is a serious environmentalist, and you sound just like him.

We all just put up with his rhetoric and many of us laugh too.

I realize it isn't a laughing matter, and that the planet may be, and probably is in real trouble. One or two people not buying a big SUV won't make a big difference. Even 1000 people won't make a difference. Have you been to Eastern Europe lately? That was a huge eye opener for us. They are living in the 50's there, still burning coal, and massively polluting their environement, which does affect us to some degree here.

It just seems very, very silly to me, to get all upset at people that should be our friends, because they did something you wouldn't do or mainly because they don't agree with you. In our family, my brother knows that most of us feel he is spinning his wheels, and he allows us that atttitude. Try to treat the rest of us like family, even if we don't agree with you, okay?

Actually Valis - I need to clarify something.

I mis-understood your statement. Yes, you can burn used vegetable oil directly in the diesel engine, BUT it takes some finnagling to do so.

One needs to add a second fuel tank to the vehicle (which takes up precious space in some of these smaller vehicles).

Then, one needs to route the fuel line from this added fuel tank to a valve - and have the ability to switch between the regular diesel fuel tank - and the vege-oil tank.

The reason is that the car cannot be started on the regular vege-oil - until it is heated up to a really hot temperature. (Not sure what it is, and don't want to do the research to find out the temp right now.)

That's the principle that this works on. The vegetable oil - if heated hot enough - then fed into the diesel engine - will combust just fine.

So - start-up and shut-off of the diesel needs to be on regular diesel - running mode - vegetable oil.

I didn't like that idea - and opted for the bio-diesel route - as it needs NO modifications to the diesel engine. If you run out - filler' up with the good ol' regular petro diesel, and keep going.

Getting the vegetable oil from some of these 'greasy spoons' can be challenging... as it can have all sorts of crud in the oil. Salts, french fry bits, etc.

I always used a good filtering system to clean the oil up before I processed it for my vehicle.

you guys are using up nearly 30% of the stuff!

Yes, the US consumes more resources than any other nation, but we also produce more than any other nation.

    HEY!!! I resemble that remark!!!

But seriously. You're in a field that _I_ know!

Three years ago while everyone was spouting "What you should do is..."

I was saying... "What I am _doing_!"

Right now... I am in a bloody mobile home park... worse than a Nazi concentration camp! They don't allow things that might go 'boom!'. Silly people!

    Regards,

    Jim TX

P.S. Just joking about the 'boom' part. Bio-diesel is very benign stuff... once it's mixed properly.

    mulan,

i am far from being an eco freak. but the ignorance of some people to the problems is just very aggrevating!

to your example. you have to realize that north america is consuming 30% of the oil! eastern europe burns less than a fifth of that!

the fact that all people around the planet want to increase their living standard will cause a gigantic problem. the only solution is to consume as little energy as possible...all of us. and then if we are lucky and nuclear fusion works (in perhaps 50 years) we can live all happily ever after!
