Actually a characteristic of a cult is to have the members spy on each other.
Serious sins (as defined by the organization) are to be confessed immediately. The members are to be reported if found walking contrary to the rules.
By now the Bethel spies (HELLO BOYS CAN YOU HEAR ME??) and they do read this board, are fully aware of the phenomenon we have called "The Fade".

Minimus, it sounds like your mom's congregation is a bunch of nut-jobs. Pompous, heavy-handed egomaniacs. I haven't heard of much of that going on around here, luckily (although it wouldn't surprise me if the last congregation we were in was behaving like this. Buncha windbags there too.)

My mom used to feel quite guilty when Lev. was mentioned for not turning me in because of my beliefs and ahem, other things. Now, she's realizing that these "men" are only that and I keep trying to inculcate to her how the elders/Society can make ANY rule they want and can say YOU have disassociated yourself----simply due to a new rule. She's getting it. She's 79 in a couple of weeks. Not too old to learn, I hope.
