How many of you are childfree by choice?

Well this thread ran and ran!

EF you are welcome to swim in my direction any time. I loved your little rant.

As for pressure to have kids - I don't get it from my inlaws - very wisely they say nothing when the conversation goes in that direction - I get it from my partners 9 year old daughter who cannot comprehend that I would not want to have a baby just for her to play with. She has a new baby brother at home and was complaining about the fact he cries, tempered with "but he's soooo cute". I suggested the best way to deal with a crying baby is to stick it in the shed at the bottom of the garden and turn the stereo up until it gets bored. She was horrified and has since stopped trying to get me up the duff, thank god!

She hasn't stopped the silly "would you rather have both legs amputated or have a baby?" game ... going to extraordinary lengths to confirm just how much I would not one.

My partner also cannot comprehend how I went from being a nanny (I did used to like kids when I was a kid myself) to being the person who enjoying a sunny QUIET afternoon in the garden with my book goes ballistic when I hear children screaming and laughing in a neighbouring garden and stamps off like an old troll into the house to find ear plugs.

Am I the only person who finds children irritating and plainly a nuisance?!

Of course, most folks take at least 70 or 80 years to reach that point...

LT - I can take that two ways:-

    1) That I am unbelievably mature and wise for my age

    or

    2) that I define grumpy old woman.

Which is it to be me, my friend?

You crack me up Crumpet! From now on, you shall be Grumpy Crumpy to me.

When I was a child, I prefered the adults like you over the ones into children more. So hard luck, you might find them irritating, but they're gonna love you, because you won't treat them like children, if you see what I mean.

Iggy - that is soo funny! Grumpy Crumpy was my nickname when I was growing up and god you're right: the kids on our street don't seem deterred at all by my grouchy manner. In the morning when I'm walking to the station there's about 8 of them outside waiting to be ferried to school and there's a chorus of "hello nina". And they all want to come and play at my house when mr crumpet's little girl is over. Also mr crumpet gets peeved because his daughter doesnt want to cuddle him as much as she does me!

It's like when people have a phobia about cats, isn't it? Have you ever noticed how those people attract every cat in the neighbourhood? Maybe kids are born with a hunting instinct

Young children --- I used to like to play with them, but in my old age (ha) I have no interest. Worse, I have no patience. I am truly amazed anyone could possess enough patience and endurance to raise a child without losing their minds or their temper.

Older kids, ie 10+ --- I like them. They are like mini-adults.
