I am not so worried about my bag being checked. What worries me is giving the FBI secret access to business, medical, library, bookstore and other records. Oh, and roving wiretaps too. Why, pray, does the FBI need access to a private citizen's medical or library records? It's not like you can just go to the public library and learn how to make a nuclear bomb. Well, at least not at my local library.
I think it would help if our great leaders stopped being secret best buddies with rich families like the Bin Ladens, stopped secretly or otherwise supporting dictatorships like Saddam, stopped chasing the oil at all costs , then pretending they are interested in restoring justice in countries overseas, stopped using our SAS troops to train foreign troops, stopped selling arms abroad to unstable countries, and in fact stopped making land mines, flame throwers, and other evil ways to mutilate and kill, and got rid of Guantanamo, Abu Ghareb, and every other prison like those that the papers havent exposed yet.
Or mabe we should just carry on with bag searches.
It amazes me that some Americans seem to think that having their bag search violates their rights (but I guess police shooting people on 'suspicion' is OK eh? )
WAKE UP !
You have no rights anymore. Good old George has used the constitution for toilet paper and wiped his arse over the whole thing. Have you seen the patriot act? You can be picked up off the street, locked up and do not have the right to notify anyone.
You have no rights anymore.
It's actually been quite some time till anyone "over here" has ever been "free" and had "rights"...
Now they've just made it official..
Glad to see we can agree on something...
u/d (of the "freedom" is an "f" word class)
Uncle Bruce and Robdar----WELCOME BACK!!!! Simon is right about the Patriot Act. It does make me a bit nervous.
To be honest I am feel safer when bags are searched.
A few weeks I went into an art gallery in Venice, Italy which had hundreds of millions of pounds worth of paintings in. I was carrying a large shoulder bag and I approached the officials to see if there was any where I could leave it. They told me I had to carry it with me. As I went to walk off I asked them if they wanted to check it. They just looked bored and shook their heads. I was amazed at their casualness.

Simon, you're right, only some Americans feel that way. Most of us don't mind because it does make us feel a little more secure.
I did NOT vote for Georgie. To be honest, I am one of the ones who thinks he didn't win either election fair and square, the vote counting was questionable both times. If Zeb runs, let's hope that doesn't happen again.
Well the Patriot Act is a whole thread onto itself.
The 4th amendment says: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Random bag searches and it's ilk isn't APPROXIMATELY what the Fourth Amendment was designed to prevent. This is SPECIFICALLY what the Fourth Amendment was designed to prevent. Because I can't think of anything more blatantly and specifically forbidden than the police randomly stopping people and looking through their stuff. Today it's random searches to get on the subway...what's next? Random searches walking down busy sidewalks? Pat downs before walking into busy grocery stores?
I'm speaking for Americans....you Brits have your own constitutional issues. Fear is a powerful motivator.....let's be RATIONAL about that fear however and examine evidence whether or not bag searches really are even effective at all.
Evil, I have to say that I agree with your sentiments. I was chuckling darkly at your post where you mentioned being asked for your papers. You are right, this stuff is all closing the barn door after the fact, spend the time, money, etc on intelligence operations not turning the police into storm troops.
