Katie, if the bombers of 9/11/2001 and 7/7/2005 were carrying bibles....then I'd have gladly stood in line to have my bible checked........

Do You Think Bag Searching Violates Your Rights?

Depends on where and when...If you're going to fly on a plane for instance...you don't own the airline...you are renting a seat for the ride whereever it's going. It's their plane, if they say no to certain objects and they tell you up front that you may be searched then your rights are not being violated. The same with the subway...you're paying to ride on the train, you're purchasing a ticket to ride makes you subject to the rules of the train.

Now stopping people on the street and searching their bags violates rights in my opinion..the same as coming into your home and searching without a search warrant.

Of course the rules and laws are different in the UK than in the US. They got damn cameras everywhere. I felt like big brother was watching.

I prefer what Benjamin Franklin said:

The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either.

OK it was a crap illustration.

Realistically - nothing is going to stop a 'clean skin' who is willing to die, from entering the subway with a bomb strapped to his back. No amount of ID cards (because clean skins have no previous convictions, and have no connections with anyone suspicious), no amount of border control (because these people are born and live in England), no amount of looking out for suspect packages (because these people dont leave the packages, they strap them to their own backs and die)

So really why do anything? Except that society demands that SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.

OK heres a better illustration. You could quite easily modify it yourself to underatansd it, but for those of you that are struggling:

A girl goes to a nightclub wearing a skimpy top and a mini mini skirt. She leaves at three in the morning and walks home via a dark alley. She is drunk and her top is ripped, exposing her breasts. She gets raped.

The judge / witnesses / conservative voters / daily mail readers say "what does she expect?"

She says "just because I was drunk, and half dressed and walking down a dark alley at 3am in the morning with my breasts exposed I wasnt consenting to be raped".

My argument is: Legally - No you do not deserve to be raped. You are quite entitled to to walk home in any way, at any time in any state you want to. You should not come to any harm.

But REALISTICALLY - you would be silly to rely on your rights in such a situation. You would be far better to acknowledge that there are bad people who will not respect your legal rights. There are simple things you could do to ensure people respect your right not to be molested - like walk a safe way home, like put your bosoms away, like not be drunk and on your own.

No, you should not have to modify your behaviour to ensure that people respect your rights, they should do that anyway, but if you have an idea that they might not, then why not act sensibly, even if you should not have to?

So - to rely on your rights not to be searched may well be a legally sound argument, but would it not be better to allow it under these special circumstances? I dunno. Just my opinion.

Sorry if terrorist stereotyping horrifies you.

Billygoat....I can understand where you're coming from, but here's a story that I think you'll find humorous!

Carol, unfortunately, I don't find the story humorous. I find it sad. Don't get me wrong...I don't have an alternative solution to the random checks, but I do know that the racial profiling isn't the answer. Unless you've been assumed guilty for being darkhaired/skinned/wearing the wrong clothing, etc, it's not something easily understood...so sure...give your freedoms away. Who's it harming?

    uc,

    I love his quote!

as my dad says, "expect the worst, hope for the best."

Expect a terrorist attack. Search everyone. Hope no one is a terrorist.

What you don't understand Mini, is that there is no "terrorist stereotype" that you can VISIBLY see. Let me guess...you've never been stopped, made fun of, or overlooked because of the color of your skin or hair? If you had, you wouldn't be so quick to make comments like that.

I'm not refering to making fun of anyone. All I maintain is that if a person looks like Osama Bin Laden and he's on MY plane, I will feel much, much better if he is carefully checked out.
