Do You Think Bag Searching Violates Your Rights?

Our Constitution only applies to the United States and as of yet, at least to my knowledge, unless they have permission from us, probable cause or a warrant, the police cannot just search anything of ours! The places presently searching items, i.e. theme parks, government buildings, etc. all have notices and reasons for the searches, so if you don't like it....don't go there!

The searches of backpacks/knapsacks in London, I can understand....as these are the items used to carry the last 8 bombs.....4 on 7/7 that caused a great deal of damage and 4 on 7/21 that, thank god, were duds.

CNN has just anounced the arrest of one of the 4 suspects they were looking for after yesterdays attack, at or very near the same place where the suspect was shot this morning!

The other day I attended a Major League Baseball game, and of course bags were being searched, including my daughter's. I had no problem with it. To me, any time that large numbers of people are gathering into any enclosed location, bag searches are no problem. I appreciate the efforts to keep people safe.

Its like saying should you be able to walk down a dark alley naked without being raped?

OF COURSE you have the RIGHT to walk anywhere naked. Being naked is not a legal invitation to rape.

BUT REALISTICALLY - if you walk down a dark alley naked you are inviting trouble, so REALISTICALLY you would be best to protect yourself by (a) not being naked, and
    (b) not walking down dark alleys

Unfortunately, however much of a human right lawyer you are, real life has a way of cutting across your legal rights. BE SENSIBLE!!

If searching stops bombs, then be searched and stop bleating on about your legal rights. Start exercising some of your social responsibilities.

In view of the transit bombings, do you feel that police should be able to search you or your bags at anytime?

    No. But then they don't.

For them to search my belongings in my private home then they need to have a good reason to do so.

If I'm entering some public place though where I could be a threat then I don't mind being searched - it means everyone else is being searched too and that makes me safer.

It probably does violate my rights but there is no point to make an issue out of it because of the situation we are in. If further things continue to happen you will see worse infringements of our rights. The civil libertarians will be screaming about racial profiling ad nauseum but when people start getting hurt then all this will all become very natural.

It will simply be a matter of self defense for the rest of us.

I have no issue with credible searches being done. Still, I do wonder whether or not this could lead to losses of freedoms. But I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Umm... public indecency...you don't have the right to walk around in public naked.

Searching people who want to get on the subway or on a bus or in a large gathering.... ie. baseball game, convention etc. is one thing. If you dont want to be searched you can leave. But giving the police the power to search ANYONE ANYWHERE without any cause is going above and beyond taking "social responsibility".

    It was an illustration.

Of course im not suggesting you walk around naked.

Please try and follow the general theme of the argument.

Regarding not "looking right", I'm sorry but if a person *looks* like a terrorist, I want him thoroughly checked out before he gets on the plane.
