How come the active JWs never step into these sort of threads to answer the really important questions, that's a shame and speaks volumes. They just avoid the questions that can stunmle and convince themselves someone, somewhere in the org must have answers.

Can defd or another JW tell me why the watchtower society was formed?
by jaffacake inthis is serious part of my research.
the watchtower articles from the 1970s help, but there are gaps in my understanding.
russell was the founder of the watchtower society, and presumably part of the faithful & discreet slave?

Please don`t read if you are a current witness and have doubts.
by void inwell i am new to the board, i have faded away from the truth lies about 6 years ago.
it still has an effect on me today, so much so i gave the warning in the title.
this is because one of the things drilled into me, was that its far worse to lead a member of the flock away.

Welcome and congratulations for the best thread title I have seen!
Although I'm not a JW I tend to agree with much of your thinking. Looking forward to discussion about the science, God & creation. I read some cool stuff by some of the best theologians, and you're in good company with the way you think.
Off on hols for 3 weeks, see ya in November

C.T. Russell and the fiery trial of the church in 1910......
by kid-A inin thy kingdom come, c.t.
russell derives 4 dates that he believes correspond to biblical prophecy based upon several pyramid measurements.
he derived the 1914 (1915) dates from measurements of the entrance passage from one of the tombs to the entrance of the funerary pit, thus on page 342 he states:

that sometimes happens to me, usually when I am pasting a quote. Wonder if the forum censors out key words or quotes to protect copyright or something?

Do you JW's believe that during the 1000 yr reign that all the dead will JW
by booker-t ini was wondering especially from some of the old timers out there jw's or ex-jw's that really understand the jw's concept of the reserrected dead during the 1000 reign of jesus christ.
do they believe that the people brought back from the dead will have to convert to jw's in order to live on for eternity?
i know this sounds like a stupid question but i was talking to a jw's elder the other day and he told me that people like my grandmother who was a "devout born-again baptist" would have to study and become a jw's in the 1000 year reign before she could enter into paradise.

Interesting. And can someone explain something for me, a non-JW, please.
If JWs forgo materialistic pleasures like a lovely house, lots of good things to eat and drink, wonderful holidays etc. to put spirituality first, why should they suddenly change their values in the new 'system' to something less spiritual.
Will they be more interested in those kinds of material things now considered worldly or materialistic? I hear JWs talking of wonderful material things in the new system. Will it be okay to be more materialistic in the new system than in this one? Is that the good news? spirituality now wins you materialism later? Interesting.

The story of my life (part 2)
by onacruse inso, my life as a jw has been cast, before i can speak or understand even one word.
my folks relegated their parental authority to the wts (they told me that, explicitly), and were just tickled pink to see me grow up in accordance with the expectations that they themselves had adopted: the end is near, there is no need to worry about anything in the future, but just to devote my life to the "cause of the truth.".
but this is where the cognitive dissonance comes into play.

That's about what I was doing when I was 13 years old.
Me too, but as a Seventh Day Adventist, with their watchtower equivalent. Preparing for baptism by immersion at my local Hall.

Are you living your life fully knowing that you will one day die?
by JH inas jw's it was out of the question to die.
the end was too close for that to happen, unless you had a bad accident or sickness.
most of us believed that we wouldn't die, and on top of that we were about to become young again.. since we will all die, do you make it a priority in your life right now to live it fully, and to love fully the ones you care for because every day you skip, its lost and won't come back..

Why yes, always have and always will, until I die.

Limping on two opinions - mine and theirs!
by atypical ini have been lurking at these sites for a while and have finally decided to post.
forgive me for not wanting to give any clues as to my identity, but i am still struggling as a fence-sitter - knowing how i feel but not wanting to be cut off from my family and friends.
so my meeting attendance is sporadic; when i go to the meetings i am told "i'm worried about you" or "where have you been, your wife has been coming by herself".

The story of my life (part 1)
by onacruse inin my totally overwhelming 53 years of human existence, i've finally learned that "it isn't what you think you know; it's what you've been through" that matters to most other people.
so, as an unwilling, though also willing, participant in that cycle of life and death, belief and unbelief, i will offer more to you more than i've ever said to any group of folks than i've ever known.
that's jwd .

Onacruse,
I'm really looking forward to the whole story, but I'm going away for 3 weeks on Wednesday, so I'll catch up later.
Unless I can get online at Epcot...

I wish my former friends would leave the "lie" I mean "truth"!!
by weinermcgee ini still dream about this often!
some of my childhood friends stop being jw's so i can have them back as my friends, it would be like a dream come true.
but some of you might say: "you would take them back as friends?
-
jaffacake
If any of them leave, perhaps the REAL friendship will be that much greater because you've been through the same thing.
