yes, us too. we were supposed to fear god. also, they said that it insinuated that we take chances that could be risky and life threatening. if we died from taking such chances then we would not be ressurected. no fear was encouraging us to view the world like satan wants us to.

"No fear" t shirts, forbidden???
by free2beme inin the 1990's there were a lot of things that had the saying "no fear" on it and one of the local elders figured out that this meant we live life and do things without fear.
so that basically we could try things and take chances, without the normal fear we associate with things in life.
well in a special needs talk they decided that "no fear" t shirts should not be worn by good witnesses and they asked that we not wear them to witness gatherings, or even in life.

Did anyone experience that feeling at the end of assemblies, or C/O visits?
by dido ini`m new on here so don`t know if this subject has been covered, but i was wondering if anyone else experienced that overwhelming feeling at the end of assemblies, or when the c/o visited and gave his talk, there was a different feeling in the air, and i always thought it was `jehovah`s spirit`.
now i`m out and have learnt a lot about the borg, and know all their dastardly deeds, i can`t understand what that feeling was.
it can`t have been his spirit, as i don`t believe now that the borg is the `truth`.

Were YOU Gossiped About In The Congregation?
by minimus indo you know who the worst offenders were??
the elders.
the elders, because they were "shepherds and overseers" believed they had the right to talk about you, your family, your job, your personality and so forth.....they pick apart any male in the hall under the guise of seeing whther someone "might qualify for privileges".

at age 18 i had befriended another sister who just moved to the cong. we got along great as just friends. we spent a summer hanging out which felt like several years. we were so much alike but had to stop hanging out because people in the cong. were gossiping about how we were dating and would probably end up having sex in the car in some desolate parking lot. i elders even had a meeting about it with her mother who came up with the rule (probably a "suggestion" from the elders) that we had to have someone with us when we hung out like a chaperone even though we weren't dating. in a cong. where i had no friends they took away my only friend.

One of the long term effects of growing up a JW...
by Pwned infor me anyways.. i still have nightmares about demon attacks.
that was the one belief that really had a grip on me growing up.
i was terrified of demons and even thought i was being attacked one night for bringing home a toy with a pagan symbol (ying-yang) on it.

i have also had many nightmares about satanic people trying to sacrifice me or deamons after me. now i view them as silly nonsence. i remember seeing ghost busters at the theaters and i had a fear of slimer the friendly green ghost for about a year. now i like to watch scary movies and can watch about three of them a night by myself in the dark and then go to bed without any problems. i think its nonsence and don't believe in the urban legands or demonic stories i see in the movies. if there were deamons i think they would be very different than what we have been used to hearing about.

Is God dirt?
by MsMcDucket inlegolas, got me to thinking on this.
genesis: so god created man in his own image, in the image of god he created him; male and female he created them.... by the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.
ok, he created man in his own image and man was made from dirt?

The Increasing Degradation of Women in the Watchtower Society.
by Dogpatch infrom towerwatcher:the increasing degradation of women in the watchtower society.
the lifestyle of a woman as one of jehovah's witnesses is certainly not an easy job.
it is a well known fact that most of the work that takes place within the watchtower society contributing to its success, is due to the backbone of the watchtower which can be described as the women in the congregation.

actualy i had an opposite experiance apf. seemes like the majority of people in service were sisters. not too many brother pioneers and because of that the sisters got realy good at conducting field service meetings. whenever a brother would come in (not that often) everyone would realize that it was him that had to take the lead now. so he would fumble around, try to remember how things were supposed to go and present the daily text while trying to make sence out of it himself. it was realy pathetic how badly the elders tried to wing it when the sisters were right on top of things and already had their car groups arranged while he decided who should go with who. oh and i dont understand why the bible says that women should be in subjection because man was created first. what does that have to do with anything? i think the bible was selectively put together by sexist men.

JWs abusive by nature.. ?
by osmosis inthe current pop psychology about cults is drawing a very strong parallel between cult victims and "battered woman syndrome".
1. the woman believes that the violence was her fault.. 2. the woman has an inability to place the responsibility for the violence elsewhere.. 3. the woman fears for her life and/or her children's lives.. 4. the woman has an irrational belief that the abuser is omnipresent and omniscient.. i myself have noticed certain abusive patterns in my relationships with my jw relatives.
a lot of it comes from my dad and now when i think about it, i think of it as manipulative, "jedi mind tricks" he tries to play on me.. has anyone else noticed manipulative and/or downright abusive undercurrents among jws?

yes i have. whenever i asked a question or doubted things in the bible like the scripture 1CO 11:14 "does not nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him..." i would get an evil eye response that basicaly told me to shut up and except it. and then everyone in the car group was silent in a way that made me feel that i should not have brought it up so it left me feeling guilty for doing such an evil thing.

ymca and christianity
by aoxo inok so when i was leaving i wanted to check out the local y and do some classes but i was always warned by so many people and articles in the w&a that they were tied in with churches and paying for a membership would be like giving money to other churches.
i tried to look up that info from the quotes in older w&a's and couldn't even find the book that was quoted.
i even grilled the people at the y and repeatedly asked if it was or ever had been affiliated with a particular church.

JW urban legends
by Highlander ini remember very few of the details, of when, where and exactly what took place, however a few years ago i was told the story about three elders that were walking together and the middle.
elder was struck and killed by lightning.
the other two elders went to his house to help out his wife and discovered 'apostate' material in their home.

i beleive the one with the car goes like this; a pioneer woman sees a car ad for a $20.00 bmw and checks it out. the lady says you have to pay before you see the car. so she does and its a brand new beamer. she asks why she is sellig it for so little and the woman says that it was her husbands who recently left her for a younger woman and sent her divorce papers and legal instructins to sell the car and send the money she sold it for to him in another country. i have heard this story as a joke format by a non witness before so i know its bs. how about this one; there was a sister that liked a guy she met door to door. he liked her and they started to date. the elders said not to date him because he's worldly and cannot be trusted and will take her away from god. she did anyway and married him. on the wedding night he announced to her that he has leprosy. i might be mistaken but isn't leprosy like erradicated or something. ive never heard of someone who wasn't in the bible having leprosy.

missing out on parties while i was a witness has been very bad for me emotionaly. im afraid to go to any party now. i think you should go to the party, it sounds like a very healthy and fun thing to do. the bible does not say you can't go to birthday parties, it just gives two examples of bad things happening in two parties. but bad things can happen at any party, even a cop party with a black male stripper.
