Are Apostates "Obsessed" with Jehovah's Witnesses?
by booker-t ini was talking with my friend the other day and he was telling me that he was going to several kh to debate with jw's elders to look in their libraries and show jw's the "cover ups" from their own books etc; this man has "no life" except debating with jw's.
i feel enough is enough!
when are apostates going to just let it go?

I faded from the org many years ago and was more than happy not to think of it at all until recently. I came across this site a few weeks ago and was astounded at the misery the JWs are still capable of inflicting on well-meaning people.
To accuse "apostates" (a hateful term) of obsessing over JWs is like accusing someone with a broken leg of obsessing over the pain. As long as the Society continues to inflict misery and damage on its members and former members, "obsession" will be in order. I believe it's necessary to examine one's JW experience before getting on with one's life. -

JWs must be careful about "stumbling those weaker in faith."

I have sporadically bought and sold items on eBay for about 8 years. Never had a problem with eBay or PayPal.

Elder says no to congregation picnic: Brooklyn says no large gatherings
by truthseeker inour congregation has really gone down in recent months.
the friends don't talk to each other, there have been many disfellowshippings and jc's.. an elder i was talking to in the kh after the meeting says that "he and the other elders would like to have a congregation picnic but can't because bethel disapproves of large social gatherings.".
i looked at this elder and felt sorry for him - it was like hearing a child cry because mother wouldn't let him outside to play baseball.. the cong.

One of the very few enjoyable JW experiences I had as a child was attending the large picnics and softball games held once or twice every summer. Now JW kids don't even get that. Just gets worse and worse.

Is The Society Truly "Destructive"?
by logansrun inis it really proper to say that the witness organization is a destructive religion (or cult) or that they promote self-destructive behavior in its members?
most on this forum would say yes, emphatically so.
i think the situation is actually more complex, however.

"I don’t believe it is fair to categorically state that they are destructive without defining what one actually means by such a label."
LR, you seem to forget that most of the posters here speak from personal experience. They have personally experienced destruction of their freedom of thought, of their childhoods (in many cases), of their families. And they have seen similar destruction of other JWs' lives. If one is an eyewitness to a crime, one has the right to fairly and categorically state that they have seen a crime committed. Your attempt to pin down a definitive label of "destructive effects" is nothing more than hairsplitting. -

Reification of the "cult" idea
by logansrun insometimes i must confess bewilderment at peoples talk of cults: i.e.
comments like well, the witnesses display all the characteristics of a cult as noted by [insert anti-cult website here].
has it occurred to anyone that the idea of a cult is a human invention, indeed a very peculiar modern human construct in comparison with the rest of social history?

Could Someone Explain This
by Undecided ini have three cherry trees in my yard and the birds eat every cherry before it's fully ripe.
my brother-in-law has the same type of cherry trees in his yard and the birds don't bother his at all.
they are just about 250 feet from mine.

As a parakeet, I can say with authority that birds can distinguish between apostate cherries and non-apostate cherries.

PETA Protest Backfires
by Stephanus inhttp://www.gjsentinel.com/news/content/news/stories/2006/05/18/5_18_1a_kfc_protest.html
a human inside an injured-chicken costume, hobbling in protest on the sidewalk wednesday in front of a kentucky fried chicken restaurant, didnt achieve the desired effect, according to many who dined there.. brad steig called wednesdays protest in grand junction by the people for the ethical treatment of animals good advertising for kfc.. the protest consisted of four adults and one child holding signs in front of the restaurant, handing out fliers and dvds and urging people to not eat at kfc until the restaurant buys chickens from humane vendors.. steig, a manager for halliburton, said he heard about the peta protest on the radio and decided right then to eat at kfc on wednesday, the day of the protest.. not only that, but he bought seven of the biggest buckets of chicken and all the side dishes and used four trips to load them into his halliburton pickup to treat his co-workers.
i don't know if there's an "ultimate" right-wingers' fantasy, but collecting 7 buckets of fried chicken in a halliburton pick-up in front of a peta protester must come pretty close.

One organization I do admire is the Organization for Responsible Care of Animals (ORCA). They don't protest using animals for food or having animals as pets. Their aim to to treat all animals in a humane manner. As far as I know, they don't go in for extreme PETA-like stunts.

"Celebrating wedding anniversary. 6 wonderful years. Funny, they all said my marriage wouldn't last since I didn't marry a witness."
They said the same thing to me. We're married more than 30 years. Happily.
