He may not have done any miracles, nor tried to make it appear that he had. It is possible that
the stories were made up. Suppose Jesus was this expert on Hebrew scriptures that rode an
ass into Jerusalem, tried to become king, and got killed for his effort? If you wanted to make him
your Messiah, retell the story with some miracles mixed in.

Jesus .... the first great magician?
by collegegirl21 ini was talking with one of my guy friends because i'm not sure what i believe right now and he asked me this question, "what if jesus was just the first great magician?
" he pointed out that magicians now could walk on water, and do other miraculous things that "ordinary" people couldn't normally do.
so i pose the question to you: what do you think about jesus being the first great magician?

Friendships
by return visitor inwhen firmly entrenched in the borg i complained to my wife that friendships in the "truth" didn't seem as real as i noticed worldly people had.
for instance, the worldly person i worked with was constantly doing things with friends, whether it was going to ball games or helping a friend put on a new roof.
in our circle of friends we could never count on help, our friends were too busy trying to earn a living and doing the borgs bidding.

When I was younger in the Borg, I had great friends in the Borg. As I got older, I still kept one true friend from that crowd.
I do notice that my coworkers have a very tight outside-of-work bond, they are very good friends with each other.
I, of course, am not of that bond because I am a JW, but they always welcome me to join them.My true JW friend and I now live a thousand miles apart, so we don't get together often.
I cannot even count on the JW's to drop me off at the airport, but my coworkers would do so.
I got invited to most gatherings as a JW elder in the cong. but I suppose even that will stop now
that I stepped aside. I will probably join the coworkers now, but I hope my wife sees what will
happen to "friends" in the Borg. -

Society's viewpoint of other bibles
by Zico ini like this quote, from page 145 of theocratic ministry school book about using other bibles.
'you must realize, however, that some bible translators have taken liberties with god's word.
their renderings may not conform in all respects to what was in the original bible languages.

This quote is good for your topic:
***
w97 10/1 p.20 par. 15 Loyally Upholding God’s Inspired Word***Show discernment in the selection of the Bible you use. (Proverbs 19:8) If a translation is not honest about the identity of God himself—removing his name from his inspired Word on whatever pretext—might the translators also have tampered with other parts of the Bible text? When in doubt about the validity of a rendering, endeavor to compare it with older translations. If you are a teacher of God’s Word, favor the versions that hold closely to what is in the original Hebrew and Greek text.
It leaves out the implied thought- "If a translation is not honest about the identity of God himself—removing his name from his inspired Word on whatever pretext OR ADDING IT IN WHERE IT NEVER WAS—might the translators also have tampered with other parts of the Bible text?"
This thought is implied too- "...favor the versions that hold closely to what is in the original Hebrew and Greek text. Since you can't read the original Hebrew and Greek text, just rely on Freddy Franz or other WTS writers to tell you what they should say.

What could be worse is the other way around. Suppose first contact was made by
aliens with a couple of JW's distributing the Kingdom News #37. -

FAO sKally/sf
by Zico ini have decided to respond to this post via a new thread in order to stop ub's thread from going off topic: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/122731/2171641/post.ashx#2171641 .
"those who are afraid of the shunning policy {process} need to feel this on some level in order to fully comprehend why so many are hurt and angry, still.
why we are fighting so hard for truth and justice.

Not having read the previous thread, I will agree.
Unless you are actively picketing the WTS or one of it's Kingdom Halls,
or are heavily involved in letter writing to JW's or the news media,
unless you are in some way, devoting all your free time to bringing down the evil empire-
YOU HAVE DECIDED TO DO AS MUCH AS YOU WANTED TO.Ray Franz wrote some books, people criticize him for not doing more.
We can all do what we want, when we want, for our own reasons. -

Is everyone accused guilty?
by hambeak ini have seen a lot of posts here that attack pedophiles and want open records which i agree with.
pedophiles are detestable and disgusting.. my question is don't you think some are wrongfully accused by some especially in child custody issues?
i know of some that were accused and arrested and in one case the mother in law and wife admitted in pre trial they made the whole thing up.
-

You are definitely right. But, with the safety of the children involved, the accusations need to be taken seriously.
I think that investigations could go on quietly, so as not to destroy the innocent's reputation. The records should not be open to US, but certainly open to investigation.
I know of a depressed teen who accused her father of molesting her, because she did not want the JW life.
It was investigated to death before she admitted why she made it up. No harm to his reputation. I only wish
he learned from his experience that his daughter needed his help more than WTS needed another elder. -

My journey so far, thoughts?
by WingCommander ini've been on here nearly 5-6 years (as you can see by my profile) but hardly ever post.
for years i was satisfied with reading your stories and commenting occasionally, all the while telling myself that i was still a dub and would never change.
at the beginning, i was really just curious and also wandering if people out there grew up like i did (in an orwellian hell), and had experienced what i had experienced.

Welcome to the crossroads of your spiritual life. It's a rough place to be.
You will do fine, sounds like you will give every step lots of thought.
An opinion, just this year, see how it plays with your mother. Don't actively participate in
holidays with the in-laws, but allow your son to do so because of the wife. See how she
reacts. Mom cannot turn you in to the WTS if you know she has been reading Ray Franz'
books, so just slowly ease her into accepting your changes. -

by gold_morning infor what it is worth i wanted to pass this along.. we are all aware of those convienient brackets used in the new world translation.
the infamous colossians 1:16....."because by means of him all ((((other)))))) things were created...".
at the very bottom of the first page of their bible ...the foreword.... it says.

I am not a scholar of Greek (ancient or modern), but while I was a JW elder,
I tried to take complicated things and break them down so that I could understand
them, and so that I could teach them.I did my best to follow Narkissos' argument. He has it correct, from my point of view.
Changing to English (or other language) might necessitate more words, but the
bracketed words in the NWT are clearly not in the Greek. This particular example,
read your Diaglott to see that he is correct. -

How far do I go to get Fe2O3Baby into the nearest school?
by Fe2O3Girl ini know it is years off (he won't start school until september 2010), but i have started mulling this over.. the nearest primary school to our home is a church-aided (church of england) school.
i put sproglet's name on the list (which does not give any priority, just registers interest) and got an info pack.
the admission criteria is 1) looked after (fostered or in care) children, 2) children whose parents are identifed by the vicar as being leaders in the faith community of local churches, 3) children who have a sibling at the school, 4) children whose parents are active members of a local church, 5) local children.

I have very mixed feelings. I am not sure if I want my child educated in such a religion soaked establishment. On the other hand, when I visited the school a few years ago, it had a really nice atmosphere. All the other kids in the village have gone there, and they are not all church-goers.
These are YOUR very important decisions.
1. Religion soaked establishment
2. All the other kids in the village have gone there. It sounds like you don't really need to go to church to get your kids in there, if "all the other kids in the village" got in.
My advice is- Don't be false to your own values, see if the kid get's in without your attendance. That way, you can allow
your child to see a balanced view of religion. If Fe203Baby does not get in, revert back to #1 above, and you make sure
to educate your child well, no matter where they are sent to school.
