I tried it for the first time on expert mode tonight. That song is utterly insane.

God-guided Evolution
by serotonin_wraith init's a lot to get through, but if anyone gets through it all and disagrees with my position, i'd love to know why because i'd like to make this more solid.
i don't think i've covered everything yet.
also if you just have helpful pointers.

My stance is that if you want to believe that God manipulated the environment just right in order for man to evolve, that's fine. As long as you realize there's no supporting evidence for that conclusion, there's no evidence to the contrary. It's unfalsifiable. Evolution is silent about God's existence. It doesn't require a belief in God, but it doesn't forbid it either.

Throwing the Baby out with the Bathwater Goodbye Watchtower Hello Nothing?
by Magick inas witnesses who were deeply indoctrinated.
we accepted all of jehovah's witness teachings as a total package, it was "the truth".
there were no cracks in our armor that would allow other ideas, doctrines or thoughts to seep in.

I see what you're saying, but speeches like this are just like telling a lesbian she doesn't really like women because she "hasn't had a real man yet." I have very good reasons not to believe in God, primarily because none of the reasons presented for belief are good enough for me. I'm the type of person that needs tangible, testable evidence in order to believe something. Now I don't completely deny the possibility of ideas that don't have supporting evidence, but there is no more reason to believe in God than there is to believe in the Easter Bunny. The fact that there are many things we do not know about the universe is not proof that God did it.

For all you PETROL & GAS whiners. Stop complaining that it's too expensive!
by nicolaou inhere in the uk we're paying over a 1 a litre for regular unleaded fuel, that's about $9 per gallon for my american friends.
now i'm as aware as anyone that the bulk of my fuel pound goes to the government in duty (or fuel tax) but let's just look at the bottom line cost to you and i as motorists - 1/litre.. just getting the the damn stuff out of the ground is dangerous and expensive, especially at offshore rigs.
then you have to transport it, refine it and transport it again.

"What else can you buy for a £1 per litre? Not olive oil, decent beer, wine, perfume - hell, even some fancy, sparkling mineral waters can cost two or three times as much!"
No, but you typically don't buy 20+ gallons of olive oil, beer, wine, perfume, or bottled water a week now do you? You also don't need to buy those items in order to get to survive, either. If I only bought 1 gallon of gas a month and the price went from $3 to $9, I couldn't care less, it's only costing me an extra $6 a month. But seeing that I buy 12 gallons per week, a tripling in price would be a huge deal. Besides, prices for a lot of items drop drastically when you buy in large quantities. I currently get spring water in 5 gallon jugs and it costs me 25 cents (or 12p to you) per gallon. When buying most things, the price is in the packaging. -

Stupid Idiots at the meeting
by B_Deserter ini was at the sunday meeting today (i know, i know...) and i heard this one guy give a comment about how hollywood movies always portray rich people as happy and successful, so that's proof that satan controls the film industry because it's a lie.. .
i struggled to think of one recent hollywood film that portrayed anyone as being happy, let alone rich and happy.
if they made a movie like this guy was describing, it wouldn't sell.

The whole POINT of movies is that they have a conflict. That's what makes them ENTERTAINING. If it weren't so sad how ignorant witnesses are about the real world it'd be hillarious. -

C.O. in the basement
by DaCheech ini just saw the mail.
when i saw a bill from the satellite tv company i could not refrain from opening it.. seems like the congregation is flipping the $88 a month for the c.o.
to watch tv.. the billing was not personalized to the co, but to the congregation.

It's not surprising. I mean these guys get brand new Buicks from the society every few years, with paid health and car insurance, PLUS a monthly salary. They can justify it with "well, they're spending all their time in the ministry so that's why we assist them." No crap, that's the same justification for......*drum roll*..........................A PAID CLERGY!

Generation problem is a self-inflicted wound
by Doug Mason inthere is no need to go to any university of higher education to solve the wtss problem with generation of matthew 24:34. it only needs a primary school certificate in plain reading.
in each of the nine times that the word generation appears in matthew, jesus is talking about the jewish people of his time.
read: matt 11:16; 12:39, 41, 42, 45; 16:4; 17:17; 23:36; and 24:34. .

Precisely my main problem with JW doctrine. For scriptures that clearly only have one fulfillment, the Watchtower invents the concept of dual fulfillment, a confusing doctrine that parallels random prophecies in the Bible to our day. This kind of chronocentrism leads generation after generation of witnesses to believe that the end is going to happen within the next couple days/years/months because their time is "special." Any truly critical analysis of JW teachings will reveal that there is absolutely no basis for the idea of dual fulfillment. There is no basis for teaching that Jesus was talking about anything other than the destruction of the temple with his "great tribulation" speech. The fact that the organization goes to such great lengths with their "kangaroo-hopping" proves that they are victims of their own wishful thinking, their dogma no more credible than seeing shapes in clouds.

This story starts out as any old day in service. As one of only four regular pioneers in the congregation, I often found myself in car groups where I was the only male person. Some of the older sisters in the hall were tolerable, and others weren't so much. This day, I was with one of the other pioneers and two older sisters. This pioneer is one of those "I'm not getting married because I want to serve Jehovah (OH MY GOD IM SO HORNY I NEED A HUSBAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!)" so I'm going to refer to her as sister INGMBIWTSJ(HORNY).
Sister INGMBIWTSJ(HORNY) just got back from a door where the householder had given her a stern dismissal and she commented "well I guess he doesn't deserve the truth." Since this was several months into my pioneering stint, I was already sick of her crap, so I quipped back, "well, you don't deserve it either." Her face was that of shock and she answered "oh really?" "No, you don't, only by God's undeserved kindness do we have the ransom sacrifice and knowledge." She immediately began to search for scriptures to rebuke me with, and found one. She showed me the one where it says "continue acting in a manner deserving of the good news." I answered with "even so, it's not your place to judge who is or isn't deserving." She shut up, and the sister that was driving said "I agree with you, ." It was a good day, as it always is when you get to put a bitchy, stuck up pioneer in her place.

homosexuals and JWs
by solidergirl ini have no problem being around gay people.
but bring it up a car group and omg its like the number 1 sin in the world.
it got to point where i wanted to stand up for them.

I find it a little funny that before I left the JWs mentally, I was really homophobic. Like being in the same room as a gay person made me REALLY nervous, and I'd regularly engage in anti-gay conversations in the car group (note: JWs say "faggot" A LOT) and elsewhere. As soon as I realized it was all bunk, my attitude changed like I flipped a switch. Now I feel just as nervous during the homophobic conversation among witnesses, and I get mortified when they use words like "queer" and "fag." I wonder if that means my homophobia was tied to my cognitive dissonance and I never felt that way to begin with. Who knows. At any rate, I am now happy to be bigotry-free.
