Awesome reasoning. I recently was exploring this issue mself going over formal fallacies and the like, but you have saved me a ton of time by putting this together. On #6 - "Name-Calling" I saw it referred to as "ad hominem" (attack the person) same thing I guess - Everything "worldly" is wrong what we give you is right - no need to look at facts or logic. They always resort to this when no answer is available to support their "version" of the truth.

blondie - very true most of the history is hidden. By "not publishing" the book anymore. "Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Plan" book from the 50's is much more honest than the Proclaimers Book of today. Still waiting for an answer myself - more than 3 months later.

Why don't you just take it like a man?
by AK - Jeff inin a recent thread, i was basically called out in this manner.. here is part of the quote:.
mean no disrespect with the following but i have to ask, when you disassociated yourself what did you think would happen?
did you expect witnesses to suddenly change to accommodate you?

Why did Jesus go to the temple and through out the money changers? Didn't he realize it would hurt the feelings of people who thought the current system was OK? What about the feelings of the Pharisees? Didn't he care about them?
That is the point for many of us - OPEN their eyes. The same reason they might come to my door. I have not disfellowshipped anyone and I will treat everyone I meet and see as a person who deserves respect. If they want to treat me like dog crap that is their choice.

Had a discussion with my son. He seems to think that anybody who leaves the truth and says "I only got baptized because of pressure" (pressure from parents or friends) and then leaves is just using it an excuse because they don't want to follow the rules. They are weakly giving themselves an excuse. I tried to make him understand that people really can disagree with JWs and be reasonable thoughtful people. - It is beyond him to think like that unfortuately, but maybe he'll see it someday.
Anyone else have the pressure issue come up? The drama at the DC is a good example of pressure put on young ones.

WATCHTOWER 15/10/09 RE. D/F'D FRIENDS
by BluesBrother inthis is the 4th study article, to be studied christmas week as it happens.

para 2 "today, what a pleasure it is to be associated with a worldwide organization whose members follow the pattern set by first century christians.

The point has been well made. Leaving the organization = leaving Jehovah - ie. the organization = Jehovah. They contradict themselves at every turn. I hate that I ever shunned someone because an org told me to.

Witnesses "Policing" People...Is It True?
by CrimsonBleu inmy sister told me once she likes to "police" people, that it was sort of a game she liked to play.
she is true to her word, she does just that.
always seeking the negative, rarely acknowledging positive...anything.. is this common among witnesses?

When I was dating my wife the Elders in her congregation had her friend (next door neighbor) report regularly on when I was at my fiance's house how long I stayed, what time I left, etc.... Our elders talked to us about it. I said thanks for the warning - and did whatever I felt like doing anyway. We didn't have sex before marriage, but the "closest" was in the afternoon a day we were together. Funny "spending the night" is wrong, but elders must not have sex in the afternoon? (It's the best!)

The Case for Unitarianism
by UnDisfellowshipped in* the bible teaches that there is only one true god, only one person who is almighty god, and this one person is the father.
(see john 17:3; john 5:37, 5:44; john 8:54; isaiah 63:15-16; malachi 1:6; 1st corinthians 8:6; ephesians 4:6).
(john 5:19-20; 5:30; 8:28; 12:49).

Congrats on the relationship! Hopefully it works out good. Thanks for the response and the info. It is a shame the languages of the bible can not be perfectly understood in today's English. I think that is why it is important not to base belief on one scripture, but the message as a whole. I look forward to hearing your research and will some of my own. Obviously this verse was not stressed by my JW training. LOL!

Bluecanary - I think I misspoke a little bit - there are certainly very intelligent JWs. Mind control can affect anyone. I do know that that they TARGET those who are less educated and poor in this "system". Many times I heard complaints about working the "wealthy neighborhoods" because the educated people there would dismiss the JWs at their door. They wanted to work the poorer or low middle class neighborhoods - those people didn't know any better and accept the "mind control" techniques more readily.
The other factor is mental problems. You can be very intelligent and have depression, self-esteem, mommy issues, etc ..... These are the people cults prey on the most.
My friends - that is people I feel are true and genuine in the ORG - are people who perhaps are not educated, not able to think on big complicated matters for themselves. I love and pity people in that situation and still consider them friends even if they are confused.
